>decide to go around the first to look for some quests to learn about the world and develop my characters a bit.
>orc invasion, undead problem, help some towns people out, nothing too out of the ordinary
>feels like I am doing a free form D&D game
>pleased so far
>find a mundane side quest where you need to decide which of two men a heal slut will cure at the cost of the other dying
>decide to do it since it seemed to be short
>suddenly lightning from the heavens
>teleported to fucking space and meet some imp that apparently was appointed by the gods to record all of history
>can't leave I must go through this interactive cut scene
>get taken to meet the embodiment of Time itself and essentially get told I am the chosen one and I now need to collect magical rocks to save the world from an inter dimensional dragon.

Why do WRPGs force you into this chosen one bullshit within the first 15 minutes of every game. This is even worse than most cases, because it feels like a GM had a hissy fit that I wasn't following his rail road and just half-assed me into the main plot.

Because a story about a nobody who does menial things is even more boring than a chosen one

You don't stay in menial task stage for ever. You character is supposed to grow into someone of greater importance.

Yeah, everyone wants the classic three act structure of being an advice giving janitor, with a climactic ending of washing a house.

How far did you get single player

Do you not understand that a compelling story and game doesn't need to chosen one wish fulfillment? You can still be a badass hero, but being told that from the start isn't rewarding unless you somehow earn it.

Didn't do too much in singleplayer yet, but I figured this was gonna be a DnD type of experience with friends. 2/4 of us didn't have mics, and wasn't much group coordination. With us all roaming around the open map doing shit the story/dialogues got lost in noise.

I know it's a lot to do with the group I played with but it's not exactly a game I'll be able to find a group of strangers to play with online, is it?

I've heard the multiplayer is really janky/buggy, but that was around launch. Guess they haven't fixed it yet? Had a great time with what I played through solo, though. I'd keep playing.

Not so much buggy, but just a clusterfuck with 4 people running around aggroing fights and skipping dialog and shit... maybe it's best to play singleplayer first?

i've had an absolute blast alone, and a really great time with 3 of my mates. if they're miked and you help each other as an actual party (travel together) it's a fun time.

I'd say play it alone, see where that takes you.

My gripe is that I kill my allies much quicker than my enemies. Why is friendly fire in this game when there's all these cool spells to use?

It sounds like your friends might just not be into this kind of experience, or you'll just need to try to play tard wrangler and keep them focused on objective at a time.

Either way, I would strongly recommend playing solo instead of refunding.

It isn't "chosen one" or "random jobber." There's the third option of "self-made hero who does something extraordinary through his own hard work, determination and growth as a person."

I don't hate Chosen One stories like a lot of people do but not understanding that you can be an ordinary person who chose to do extraordinary things and make something extraordinary of themselves is more fulfilling for a lot of people.

this. solo is an adventure. game is easily GOTY material, i'd say experience it regardless.
