X finally gave Xenoblade the chance to hit it big and get taken seriously, it could have even been Nintendo's own series for an older audience, with dark and mature themes, a JRPG that wasn't afraid to include the kinds of things you only really see in RPGs of the west.

They had to go and fuck it all up because Japan didn't like it.

Nintendo was smart enough to realize the west was Zelda's true audience. I wish it could have happened here.

The game was largely systems driven with the player encouraged to explore the world at their own pace, with incentives and rewards for that exploration placed naturally around. There were only a few major roadblocks that prevented you from progressing into areas deeper than the main story followed, mostly Skell related. It also had a pretty in depth character customization system based around player classes and equipment.

CRPGs do that, yes, JRPGs typically do not. They tend to railroad the player on a much more linear, plot related path with little other room allowed to them other than some sidequests along the way. Hence why I am comparing it to a more western design philosophy
