I was probably too old to enjoy this game, the cheap le waifu robot virgin bait did nothing for me which seems to be 90% of the appeal for Sup Forums. Gameplay is okay, not great. Game takes itself too seriously for some reason too.

It's this fucking thread again. >it's pretentious >muh baby's first philosophy >waifus lol virgins It's all so tiresome. Except this time the gameplay is great apparently. Alright. Can't tell if just shitposting or if some of you legit got triggered by fanservice to the point where you can't appreciate this game. If so you need to >>>/resetera/ holy shit. This game deserves much of the praise and a lot of the criticism that it gets desu. But you guys are just being turbo faggots again.

You've got blown the fuck out yesterday, user, no need for that miserable performance again.

I thought it had an inspiring message, like even if you mess up at your main goal it's okay because that's what life is about. It's silly to devote yourself to one thing in life, and if that fails give up. Life is about messing up.

>The story and """metanarrative""" has the subtlety of a jackhammer
You're too stupid to understand it. The metanarrative goes beyond what you perceive as jackhammer; you're literally only catching the implications and not the structure. I don't have time to pick apart scenes and explain them to idiots, but make no mistakes, you're only skimming the surface of what you see at face value. The whole game is an allegory for repetition and how more things change, the more they stay the same. You'd understand this more if you played Nier.

>The light was overflowing. What that light came from, he didn't know. White and just dazzling. A silvery-white light. Its radiance, it was almost like... >"I'm finally able to meet you." >Together with the dear name, everything melted into the light and disappeared.
And then he woke up with half-broken 2B nearby crying and calling his name.
Why is it that every Nier bashing thread always starts off with this same image? Is it just one guy?
Blake Lee
>"lole de gaem iznd bad ur just zdupid u dond underzdand idz 2 deep :DDDDD" The game tries its darned hardest to make a meaningful comment on existentialism and fatalism all the while using 4th wall breaks to do so and fails miserably at it. The whole fucking premise of the game is "HURR BUT MUH MACHINES CAN HAV FEELINGS TOO" and everything in the game keeps trying to hammer that message further in with so much fucking insistence and bias all the while pretending its message is objective, it's mind boggling how anyone can try to defend this garbage.
You want good metanarrative, go play MGS2.

no one does its just a mass shilled to give Sup Forums a projection that it likes the game. you will never have a conversation with people shoving sexual and the music down peoples' throats try to hide all of the game's flaws.
Carson Murphy
>Missing the point of the game this hard The game never was about muh machines have feelings, that's cleared out of the way very early on.
Justin Turner
>The whole fucking premise of the game is "HURR BUT MUH MACHINES CAN HAV FEELINGS TOO"
This is what I meant, you don't know what you're saying. That isn't the point of the game, the point of the game is that the more they become human, the more they hate it cause to live and love is to suffer and dealing with the bad things that happen in life and over coming them.
>game keeps trying to hammer that message further in
I don't think you played past the first route and I'm starting to smell bullshit. That angle is dropped entirely near the end of the first route. Did you REALLY play the game? Post your played hours, I'm calling you out on your bullshit.
Ryan Phillips
Okay I'll bite. What are the game's flaws?
Juan Parker
The whole adam and eve shenanigan and how the name dropping all the great philosopher's are handled are two big points for me.
Jace Nelson
the character is fun to move and i like yoko taro's writing the original only had one of those
Julian Jones
I hate "metanarratives" like this. MGS2 did it a lot better than this game which beat you over the head with the message in a way that wasn't justified and didn't make sense, but MGS2's still annoys me. The game calling me a faggot for dozens of hours and making itself deliberately unenjoyable still means that the game is unenjoyable. Similarly Nier: Automata going "look how pointless everything is! See? That's the point!" makes for a lousy game.
Aaron Thomas
The point is that you are killing all of these philosophers. The theme of the game is coming to terms with nihilism. It's about understanding that nihilism is not despair. It's not subtle, but it's well done imo.
Ayden Williams
Wow, you manage to miss the point entirelly and then you suggested the most overrated case of insulting metanarrative, that crap that's MGS2 It's not about robots having feelings, it's about purpose and what makes existance worthwhile, on how failure is a vital part of any human and on how we might be doing something that doesn't suit our true selves with our lives (also the whole thing about GAMES ARENT KID'S PLAY YO which was the lamest message gave by the game imo) If you want to sound smug and intellectual you should first have some basic understanding on whatever you're going to be contrarian about ;)
Brody Murphy
That's exactly the thing though... it's only as pointless as you want it to be. Your failures build success.
Hunter Russell
Absolutely nothing will convince me that having to play the first part of the story twice isn't just blatant padding.
>oh it's symbolic of-
No fuck off. Any other game that's pulled that shit has been railed for it.
Christian Lopez
>also the whole thing about GAMES ARENT KID'S PLAY YO which was the lamest message gave by the game imo But that fits in well with the metanarrative that you yourself claimed the game has. Game's have as much meaning as you afford them.
Aiden Gomez
Adam was a pretentious fuck who didn't know what he was doing. That was one of the points of his character (for example he dresses himself like an intellectual but wears a necktie like a bow tie). The philosophy name drops were hilarious when you think about it. Karl Marx, Freidrich Engels, Simone de Beauvoir were all turned into super fighting robots (two of which competed for high scores).
Jackson Wilson
>wtf I hate Sonic 3 I get to play as Knuckles
Luis Phillips
>That was one of the points of his character Was it really, though? I think he was just obsessed with what it meant to be human and did everything he could to experience that. He even reveled in experiencing a human's death after fighting 2B.
Gavin Miller
>thinking that's at all equivalent >thinking anybody wanted to play as that fucking whiny cuckold robot
Jayden Reed

Aaron Carter
So you didn't play the game and only completed 1/3rd of it, something even which video game journalists got past. Wow, I knew you were a faggot, but this surprises even me. At least I got to prove you wrong and style on your dumbass, but that's an every day thing for me, that lost its luster in my first year.
Easton Kelly
>Simone gets fucked because of her obsessive infatuation with a man which is exactly what real Simone criticized as she was a feminist >Taro even gave her a giant carnivorous vagina
Daniel Wilson
Wall of text incoming:
Combat sucks and all you do in the entire game is combat and fetchquesting. A lot of the main quest is padded out with totally unmotivated fetchquesting. The hacking minigame isn't fun and 9S has the vast majority of playtime. The map is tiny and boring.
The boringness of the game might be acceptable for a typical Taro memegame, but for Platinum, it's such a disappointment. It's also a disappointing Taro memegame but for entirely different reasons.
The plot just isn't crazy enough. The twists are pretty mild and delivered in the worst way possible which is random files you pick up. Nier did this too but Nier had much more of an impactful gut punch with its NG+ mechanic. The subplots also don't get tied together in any meaningiful way. The death cult ties back to the main themes of the game but in the story, it's this little episodic thing that doesn't really matter to the main narrative at all.
The main problem is the writing. 9S is the only actually dynamic character who gets any kind of development. 2B is completely static through the whole game and doesn't proactively do anything so she's barely a character. A2 is so underwritten it hurts. Her entire character arc happens in a single forced player-driven decision to spare Pascal for no character reason whatsoever. That's why Automata fails as a Nier game so hard. In Nier we got to know and like a lot of the characters and that's where the drama and emotion came from. In Automata we barely know these people. Compare the amazing Devola and Popola encounter of the first game that everyone remembers to the flacid self-sacrifice scene in Automata that nobody talks about. Imagine if you didn't know who the fuck Devola and Popola were. They'd be random merchants who get a sobstory delivered in a powerpoint presentation immediately before they go out in a heroic sacrifice. It'd be hamfisted, awkward, and nobody would care about these characters.
Ian Cooper
I don't, it's shit
Leo King
He became obsessed with the absolute worst traits of humanity and got himself killed for no good reason. It figures though since the machines had trouble comprehending more than one aspect of humanity at a time. So yeah he really didn't know what he was doing by getting himself killed and abandoning Eve.
Jordan Anderson
>somehow that's not pretentious
Aiden Gonzalez
>controls as differently from 2B as Knuckles does from Sonic >story splits off from the initial run only about halfway through it >Hacking lets you merc on everybody in seconds lmao ok dude, you one of the dummies that doesn't realize 9S is the actual main character?
Austin Kelly
How does it fit exactly? It's an obvious message that whoever plays these kinds of games knows, and it does nothing but reminding how most people think one of my favourite hobbies is bullshit for retards.

Bagger 288 Engels was a pretty cool guy.

I thought it was about the fact that to live of your own accord and create your own meaning is to defy nihilism, not live with it Yeah, so no argument. >it's too straightforward but also too pretentious lol
Connor Moore
>How does it fit exactly? Like you said, "it's about purpose and what makes existance worthwhile" and what this user said "it's only as pointless as you want it to be" A game, just like everything else, is as meaningful or worthwhile as you make it. In the end section by agreeing that you believe games are meaningful and you care for the characters, you achieve the possibility of denying the ending you were given and bringing the characters you care about back to life. Life, and the experiences we have within it, only have the meaning we give them and that's shown through our efforts.
Jonathan Ross
That's not me, retard. I pirated the game so I can't post my hours but I got ending E this morning. Either way, this resumes a lot of my personal gripes against the game.
Cooper Long
The death and murder part. Humans are really good at killing and getting themselves killed (see Drakengard and NieR I suppose).
Ethan Walker
You're probably right about that. It's been a while since I played but I do distinctly remember his joy at fighting and being killed by 2B.
Ryder Ward
>defy nihilism, not live with it it's more like an acceptance of nihilism and the notion that it doesn't necessarily equate to hopelessness that everything is meaningless. Meaning comes from you.
Zachary Baker
tbqh i cant get behind playing as 9s is it worth sticking it out to play as A2?
Jason Morris
you won't have to play the entire 2B portion as 9S but it then becomes a 50/50 split between him and A2. I think if you keep at it you'll find it becomes worthwhile.
Nolan Evans
Not gonna bother platinuming this game cuz a side quest is glitched for me
Lucas Gray
Route B's a pretty slow segment if you hate hacking, but I think the stretch of the story and gameplay afterwards make up for it.
Cameron Sanchez
>Reviews a game with only 1hr into it >Didn't play the prequels that set up the story and lore Did you find the OP of this thread in Steam?
Christian Jackson
9S is cute and I like his combos. Yes it's worth sticking it out.
Jonathan Adams
yeah that pretty much sums it up. wasnt going to bother typing my own shit out. would add the game looks like liquid shit in most of places and as far as a direct port goes its a buggy piece of shit with not a single update yet and its been almost a year.
Joseph Sullivan
Butt
Brayden Taylor
If you want to enjoy 9S, give him a Spear, a Greatsword, the Wire, don't tilt your stick towards your target, and learn to swap between weapon sets mid combo. Also if things start to die too quickly for your tastes, remove any attack up chips you have. It makes keeping combos up a lot more fun. . Alternatively give him all the chips that lets him fuck with the robots.
Henry Gutierrez
Nah, the A2 bits aren't very good. They're short and you barely actually get anything cool to do.
Jonathan Butler
Well shit I should proofread before I post.
Jackson Howard
Playing as 9S is boring as hell, but I love this game. If they just gave him one more attack button he could've been bearable.
Nolan Kelly
That kind of contradicts the message about failure, as it pushes you to keep trying despite everything while the game often gives examples to dissuade you to do that, still I guess it's a better way to see the ending than me and my "videogames are art too you know ;)"
Aiden Bailey
Why do people like this again ?
The gameplay is simplistic at best and extremely streamlined and unchallenging (save for very few terrible design decisions) The story and the """mature narrative""" has the subtlety of a jackhammer and the pretentiousness of a 15 year old high school kid

>In the end section by agreeing that you believe games are meaningful Which the game follows up on by making the actual game part meaningless because you turn invincible and shoot a million lasers.

The real problem is that the messages or unique use of philosophers in this game will never be discussed because brainlet egos view anything that has a message as pretentious garbage.
Austin Stewart
Nier: Automata is a good game, and reminds me of 2D action platformers, but in 3D.
Did we say that every 2D action platformer had to be super hard? No of course not.
Owen Carter
I think the aliens and humans are a closer representation of God for the androids and machines than the Red Girls.
So, Gott Ist Tot?
Ayden Brooks
And? So what? I don't get anything out of the message. It isn't meaningful. It's the game telling me there's a theme instead of showing me something so that I arrive at the point on my own.
This is how a good game is supposed to do it. Let's take Majora's Mask. >Wow, I just sat down and played a video game for 20 hours. >But you know, I feel accomplished, and with that heartwarming ending that wrapped up everything I did in the game, I feel like I learned something about losing people and moving on and cherishing the memories. >I got something out of the game, and it didn't feel like a waste of time.
Compared to Nier: Automata. >Wow, I just sat down and played a video game for 20 hours. >That felt pointless. >See? Look at how pointless the game is! That's the point? Do you think that video games are meaningless? You don't, do you? Right. >Well no, because the game just told me to how to feel about it, so I didn't learn anything, and the message is self-fulfilling and masturbatory. >That was pointless.
Ryan Smith
hello, welcome to the thread that you haven't read yet
Wyatt Moore
It wasn't mash to win. I agree, Hard is the best way to experience the game, and I wish Very Hard weren't just 1HKO. Adam and Eve weren't cringey, their actions make sense for the most part. All voice acting was pretty good. Rina-chan and a literally who gave a performance that would put many high-profile voice actors to shame. Music is God-Tier. I don't know what the fuck this complaint is based on when you can manually control the camera, so I'm guessing you're just stupid.
