What's the verdict on Persona 3,4, and 5

I'm completely new to actually playing the series, I played 5 and it was so well written and designed that i bought a vita and download
Persona 3 and persona 4 golden.

But i'm like super disappointed in those games, like the auto generated levels are atrocious and way you approach enemies is terrible. The games feel slow as shit.

What's like the consensus, cause i always here that persona 4 is the best.

5 > 4 > 3

Bruh

wow its almost like if you play the newest most polished game in the series the others are gonna feel dated

5 has the best gameplay, vanilla 4 has the best atmosphere, 4 Golden is the most content packed, 3 has the best characters

>3 has the best characters
>Yukari
>Mitsuru
>Fuuka
Yea sure.

>series has five entries
>starts with the fifth one

without fail, every time

Yeah i know that should've been obvious but when this game came out i only every glimpsed the threads and it was a lot of.

"Yeah 5 is great but 4 is better."
Followed with "but 3 is waay better then 4"

But like playing 4 right after 100+ hours in 5 was a terrible idea.

3 is great, but the gameplay is a little outdated.
4 improves the gameplay a lot, but the story is shit.

>5
>well written
Bait thread.

My friend told me i could just jump in because the games a very loosely connected, but it was a terrible idea cause it ruined the others for me.

>Persona 5
>well written and designed

lel, P5 is the worst of the bunch. 3 is overall the best.

youre gonna have an even harder time with the first 2 games then lol

well written in when compared to other anime vidya shit, yes the plot is mostly stupid and convoluted, they even spend a litteral hour explaining a twist near the climax, but like it embraces it and it's fun.

Unrelated, but I would like to point out Persona 3 was essentially a series reboot and is a starting point for modern players. Earlier games are not much like it beyond the usual SMT fixtures.

>3
Dropped after party member died, never bothered to finish it. Therefore - shit.
>4
Didn't even bother to play it. Therefore - shit.
>5
Beaten and wanted to replay NG+. Not shit.

I mean, if you compare to Neptunia or Disgaea, which is bottom of the barrel crap, then sure thing. Otherwise, the writing is mediocre at best.

>playing Persona 1

I saw this comment all the time, seriously explain why because i'm playing 3 at this very moment and the actual game is monotonous and slow and chore.

P5 is a literal rehash of the previous games' structures and stories. It's a step above Neptunia but it isn't anything special.

Characters, atmosphere, story and music are at their very best here.

dont play portable play fes

They all gave something to offer that the other two don't, just play them and decide yourself. I would rank them as P5>P4G>FES>P3P>P4

is that the Romanian flag?

I mean compared to western games as well, I bought and poured 100+ into horizon zero dawn(sale of $20) and the witcher 3(game of the year edition $20) last month and both games are really well thoughout with the world building, lore , dialogue chains and all that shit.

But i was waaay more interested and invested in persona 5's story and characters. by no means are the witcher or hzd poorly written, but i just couldn't bring myself to care about anything despite all the content and detail.

And i can't objectively argue that persona 5 has better writing then either game, but it was way more charming to me.

So Plot > Gameplay?

5 > 3 > 4 in General
5 > 4 > 3 in Gameplay

3 is great, but it is so fucking hard to go back to. QoL improvements are so much more effective in the Persona series than standard SMT that the previous games look like jokes. P2 is also pretty alright, but don't play P1

4 stands out as the worst story-wise, though that's not saying too much. It just feels like a scooby-doo adventure with no real stakes and there's really only 2 and a half likable characters, it's unreasonably upbeat which is so far away from every other game in the series that it ends up off-putting

3 is good at the very end. Up to that point it's a complete slog with very few things to make it bearable. Some people also much prefer the way characters in your party don't have S. Links other than the girls and get their development in the story as a result. I don't like that about P3 for a couple of reasons, but I can sort of understand why others do.

I think 3 and 4 are better story-wise.
Dungeons are a lot better in 5 of course, keep in mind 3 and 4 were PS2 games.

This P3 and P4 are glorified dating sims while P5 is actually a decent jrpg.

Very much, to a point

My advice, skip The Answer

I have 6 hours in persona 4 golden as of this moment and I like every character so far.
chie and nanako especially. when does it go to shit?

DDS had great dungeons. There's really no excuse.

What the fuck? Do you read what you type? P5 is pretty much the same game as the others. The dating sim is even bigger in 5 as well.

HZD I don't know, but the writing of P5 is dogshit in comparison to TW3, there is really no comparison.

Basically this, p3 and p4 put the gameplay on the back burner.

p5 prioritizes both and makes a lot of things more convient, even grinding didn't feel like a grind

It doesn't. The characters are great, but P3's cast is stilll the best.

>p5 prioritizes both
P5's gameplay is barely decent and the writing and characters are dogshit. What are you smoking?

The dungeons aren't the way they are in 3 and 4 because of the PS2, there were other MegaTen games on the PS2 that looked better and had better dungeons. They were the way they were in 3 because Tartarus is so big and they were that way in 4 because it was rushed and had a bunch of re-used assets.

The dating part of all three of them are overblown to an absurd degree. The only time the way dating was treated was at all egregious was in P3, and it was just a smaller part of a bigger problem in that case.

>P5 is pretty much the same game as the others
Lmao the other games font even have dungeons.
Corridors font count.

I kind of get it, wrpg tend to have very dry writing.

But persona is just completly uninteresting I actually find Neptunia story better [/story

P5 dungeon are 80% linear corridors though.

>Persona 3
>dungeon crawling is atrocious, characters are excellent

>Persona 4
>dungeon crawling is atrocious, characters too

>Persona 5
>dungeon crawling is bearable, characters are good

Since, you know, the better qualities of these games request your empathy to understand its characters and how they feel, the opinion around these games shifts heavily from person to person since empathy is a very personal thing determined by many factors not in your control.

There is no consensus, of course, but in my opinion all three games have terrible gameplay but really good characters and story arcs. It will look like Persona 4 is the better rated or it looked that way before 5 came out because the more autists a game has as fans, the louder their voice will be. These games can get really deep into you and that makes people have extreme opinions.

In my opinion I would recommend you give another try with P3P, it's the most accessible way to play 3 and is my favourite of the bunch. Play it on Normal difficulty (you can't change it) and just go through the levels never, or almost never, grinding, it will still get a bit exciting in bossfights don't worry about that.

Fine. They're glorified high school simulators.

>characters are good
Only Futaba and Yusuke.

>characters are excellent
only Junpei and...
only Junpei.

>P5
>characters are good

Portables is better. In that other game hoy can play a cum dumpster slut?

Joker counts too. He's the best MC in the series.

People keep saying 3 is the best story, but I'm playing it right now and the story took a massive nose-dive after the shadow guy shows up.

How bad is The Answer?

Yes, Junpei is still the best party member.

I can't remember much about The Answer's story. It's decent if you want more battles though.

3's story is only good at the end. Whether or not that excuses the slow and boring build-up will vary from person to person. P3, 4 and 5 don't have good stories though, P3's is probably my least favorite of the 3 just for the pacing, but the as far as writing goes, they're much more character-driven than plot-driven. They're even more thematically-driven than plot-driven for that matter.

Fuuka is an angel sent from the heavens, her presence makes P3 the greatest in my eyes

>I always hear Persona 4 is the best
Surely from somewhere outside of Sup Forums right? People on here can't stop dick riding 3 and shitting on 4

For majority of Sup Forums who have only played Persona 5
5>3>4

For the majority of Sup Forums who have played Persona 3 4 and 5
3>5>4

the truth
4>3>5

That's Tatsuya from P2.

If you like so far it will only get better for you outside of a few melodramatic moments.

Have you not been on Sup Forums the past couple of months? 5 is the one that gets shit on now, just the same as got shit on for being the new and most popular one. It has been a while since 4 has been praised as much as it is now.

>manchild who almost ruined everything
NaH

100% agreed. I was like them when I played the original P4 on release thinking it was the best thing ever. But 3 is definitely the superior game to both.

>4 has been praised as much as it is now.
What? The only thing that change is that P3fags now shit on P5 instead of P4.

Worst opinion on Sup Forums, kill yourself.

4 is shit and you can safely ignore it, it's basically just MLP-tier magic friendship garbage. Anyone who says 4 is good is a waifufag with no taste.
3 on the other hand is one of the best games ever made and if you can't enjoy it for its absolutely incredible atmosphere and music the problem is on you. 5 is great but the gameplay is much closer to a traditional SMT.

>Anyone who says 4 is good is a waifufag with no taste.

You can apply this to all three games.

>P5
>Dungeons

2 Palaces can even be considered semi okay dungeons. The rest are straight lines with 2 minute back track sessions when you get told you need something they have to advance.

Persona babies are pretty sad if they think their games are 99% dating sims from 3 and one. 5 is no exception its prettier sure but its design is ass. Which is kinda sad its about as mechanically varied as mainline SMT its just pointless since almost every boss and every boss main game is shallow as shit with like 2 moves and mini bosses are just dungeon enemies with nothing new and bigger life pools.

And P4fags have come out now that they don't get shit on as much. P3fags are still the most prevalent, but P4 does still get more praise and less ridicule than it did before P5 came out.

I used to think the same until I replayed 3 a couple of weeks ago. It's a complete mess and only the last 3 months are decent.

You started the series backward. No shit going back to the previous games is going to disappoint you.

Your missing the context. P3 Fags will continue to shit on every single new persona game regardless of the number, so now that the honeymoon phase has ended the shitposting begins. 4fags finally got a break so they are more openly praising the game, but the still doesn't mean p3fags don't still shit on it as well. Im sure you're starting to learn the persona fanbase continue's Sup Forums retarded tradition on comparing the game's to eachother and flinging shit at each other when all the game's are equally good and what determines which ones "the best" is entirely subjective

>3 on the other hand is one of the best games ever made
Come on, now.

P3P is best because ryoji hits on you.

It's easily top ten and if you don't understand why you should play through it again. The motifs and aesthetics are godly.

I do understand the context, but it still doesn't change the fact that P5 getting shit on more makes it so P4 gets shit on less which makes P4fags more open to praise the game. Ergo, P4 is getting more praise and less ridicule than it did before P5's release, as I said.

3 for story
4 for comfy
5 for gameplay

P4 getting more praise =/= people always say Persona 4 is the best

Persona 2 is a true patrician choice. You should play Persona PSP if you enjoyed 2.

youtube.com/watch?v=kKqXpfMdNVc

It's far too flawed to come close to top 10. It's a creative and memorable game deserving of praise for its ideas, but a lot of those ideas just became more polished in its sequels anyway. Too much of the game is a slog and it has abhorrent pacing. It's difficult to have a game of its length be consistently engaging, but that doesn't excuse so much of it being so boring. It does handle its motifs well, and its aesthetics are pretty great, though far from the best I've seen in a game, but those two things aren't enough to make it one of the best games of all time.

I never said people always say it's the best, I just said it gets more praise and less ridicule than it did in the past.

Persona 2 duology with Persona 5 engine and gameplay would be by far the best one

>Excellent characters
>Good pacing
>Great storyline and atmosphere
>KNIGHTS OF THE HOLY MOTHERFUCKING LANCE baby

4 > 5 > 3

It was well loved upon release and it really wasn't until Atlus decided to make a dancing game that its reputation soured. Arena and Golden were both decent.

correct

Sure, but I just meant the more recent past. Though I would say Golden was more than just decent, I think it was a significant improvement over the original release, despite Marie.

what about playing them and forming your own opinion, if you don't enjoy the games then don't play them, or are you going to force yourself through something you dont enjoy because some user told you persona 3 or 4 is better?

People starting to shit on it after /vg/ was made so I'm almost sure it all started with a dumb general meme.

My own gripes with Golden are with its presentation and fanservice. A lot of the new content does thematically fit with the original game, like Marie's dungeon and the new Persona upgrades.

I disagree, only straight line was mementos and the arch angels.

The rest are well designed, intricate, multi layered and dense.
The puzzles are simply and interesting and unique to each area, the design and themes really sell the bosses and it's always challenging if you go to complete it in one day, SP management can be a bitch but it also keeps things interesting.

Pyramid was amazing, so was the space station and casino.

>My own gripes with Golden are with its presentation and fanservice.
I wouldn't blame you for that, but I actually really enjoyed that because I thought it made the game more tonally consistent. The original P4 felt to me like it couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a SoL anime or if it wanted to be the story of a murder mystery in a small country town, and it just ended up feeling like a mishmash that didn't hit the make one way or the other to me. P4G's brighter color palette, new opening, new SoL events and so on made it feel like it wanted it to be a SoL with the murder mystery being a vehicle to allow that to happen. I would have preferred for the murder mystery to be the focus, but I was also happy that the game just had a focus, which I never got form the vanilla version. I also thought the extra months where everything was more relaxed and the game got to go out gradually rather than going straight from Adachi to Izanami were a huge benefit in making the game feel like it had come full circle, as well as emphasizing the fact that it was a character-driven story and that element of it all was more important than just beating the big bad. I was pretty disappointed that P5 just skipped from Christmas to the end, because that was an enormous plus for P4G to me.

I already spent 180 on a vita and p4 and 3, i'm gonna play them no matter what.

>play P4
>get to the school festival that connects straight to the hot springs scene
>stop playing

Why the fuck do they have TWO events back to back that you have to hold triangle for 5 minutes to get past each.
