It didn't just succeed, it succeeded way too well. It took a problem that was seemingly confined to video games and turned it into a culture war spanning the entire Western world. Perhaps in the long run it will be better this way, perhaps not--only time will tell. But I think all can agree the consequences of Gamergate went way beyond what anyone expected or intended.

If you think it was actual ethics and transparency, then that was a success. I think a couple of publications put out ethics statements a bit after that saying what they'd do, hell Dan Ryckert put out recently that his wife will be doing QA for some company but he feels like it won't impact his opinion on things at all.

If you think it was "get le sjws out of games!!!" then yeah it failed but did you really think it'd succeed?

It failed at what it set out to do and turned Sup Forums into a wasteland but at least the mascot is cute.

GG accomplished NOTHING except propelling several of the worst most poisonous SJWs into "pity-fame" like ZQ (spotted hanging out at Google HQ, founded a group that works on Twitter Counsil of Safety with other vapid SJWs, etc), and Anita (made tons of monety, was one of the last ever guests on Colbert before his show ended, lectures to LISTEN & BELIEVE)

If anything games journalism and its ethical issues have only intensified or degraded into an even worse state. a lot of journalists doubled down on their shittiness
