Honestly- whatever game catches your eye. If you care you'll stick through it.

Skullgirls has extensive tutorials describing all of its mechanics and characters. The game itself is rather difficult, but not wholly unfair.
I'd start there if I were you. 2nd Encore recommended.

Don't play fighting games

Thanks user, Skull Girls looks good. What platform would you recommend?

I play it on PC, but I doubt it matters.

PC is the only alive one. SF5 is a good choice too, since it's entirely geared around trying to get in a new player. Regardless of if people think it's good or bad, it's simple to learn but deep enough to git gud at and carry over to other games.

What about Injustice 2 and Guilty Gear?

Injustice 2 is very much personal opinion. It's different than other 2D fighters (dial-a-combo style ala Tekken and Mortal Kombat). In all fighting games you'll learn basics like learning how to use and abuse frame advantage, proper footsies/spacing, etc. They're all the same ideas at the core. GG has an excellent tutorial mode, probably the best yet, but the game itself is pretty hard due to the number of options a player has and the general pace of the game. In the end you're more likely to learn if you're having fun, so just pick the one you like the most.

Street Fighter 5.
I favour 4 due to mechanics and think 5 is boring, but it does good in being easily accessible and great for beginners. It's also shaping up with arcade edition, so that might turn things for the better.

Unironically Fantasy Strike

now is this better to use an arcade stick on?

What's the canon difference between Dark Excellent Donald and Excellent Dark Donald?

Not SFV. But there isn't, you play what you like,

>The game itself is rather difficult
Stop saying this about competitive multiplayer games. They don't have "difficulties".

EDD is much stronger than DED if I remember correctly, there is a stronger Donald varation but I forgot what it was called.
>tfw Mugen ascended the power level game so much there are characters who can literally destroy your computer from the inside

street fighter 5 is the basic choice but the game has such a piss poor tutorial so dont expect you to actually teach you anything meaningful

personally i'd say give killer instinct a try it has a really good tutorial and combos aren't so hard to learn

How shit was 5 compared to 4 anyways?

...

Fighting games are awful but if you really to play this forsaken genre, try streetfighter 3.

...

>tfw Mugen ascended the power level game so much there are characters who can literally destroy your computer from the inside

explain

mugen.wikia.com/wiki/Cheapie

i found MvC3 was really forgiving to new players

...

i can't for the life of me understand why the artist thought losing their eyebrows was a good look

Haven't seen Fat Albert on Salty in a while, now that I think on it.

>characters so powerful thy can't be beat normally
>characters so powerful they kill you instantly
>characters so powerful they can kill characters that kill you instantly first
>characters so powerful they change the game and cannot lose
this shit is so fucking crazy

youtube.com/watch?v=GWn4LNkL7Kc&feature=youtu.be

It's like something out of an SCP entry
>characters that can hack the game to kill the opponent
>characters that link to websites where the opponent is dead
>characters who manipulate mugen itself
>characters that are essentially viruses that win the game by destroying your computer

Persona 4 Arena is probably the best fighter to ease into other fighters, Skullgirls has the best tutorial tied with UNIEL. I suggest completing Skullgirls tutorial then jumping to P4AU.

jesus fuck

smash bros

>that feel when too scrub to fighting games to make up my own combos
>favorite fighting game has barely any players and resources so barely any tutorials on character and combo stuff
Feels bad being dumb and bad.

Anyone that doesn't tell you SFV is just biased against it.

DOA is unironically good fighting game if you want to be good at it. You will take notice of limb movement, timing, hitbox and learn the habit to planning your movement.

You don't want to get into fighting games.

Play Soul Calibur VI when it comes out.

Which game is it?

>He doesn't main Takakazu Abe.

Golden Fantasia

>anyone that doesn't like [insert game] is biased against it
no shit

>Don't like thing
>NOOOOO DON'T LIKE THING EITHER PLEASE

me on the left

>implying anyone on this board likes thing

I hate how they're focusing on juggling combos now.

it used to be that anyone who knew their opponents well can counter accordingly.

Now its just who's the first to hit the 100-hit juggle combo that takes off 99% of someone's health.

What the fuck

Did you join the discord? People will help you. In general you can just do ABC dash/tag ABC special/super to start with.

It has nothing to do with liking the game. I don't play sfv either.

honestly, One Must Fall 2097

Recommend you try Under night in-birth and Melty Blood Actress agent.

I did join the discord, for the most part I was told to go to Mizuumi, which from what I can tell is a pretty bare bones site with a lack of combos and the sort, at least they don't seem to really match what I see in match videos. Also for a long time I didn't even know dash cancel was a thing and I have no idea what I can even use it for, that is how beginner I am.

Is a tag fighter really the best place to start learning? Especially one that's mostly dead?

I mean if you like it go for it, every fighting game is complicated eventually, but it's a weird place to start.

it really depends.
all fighting games movement and combos are different, you gotta kinda feel it out and alot of the time it takes some skill to unlock the more fun combos and movement

marvel vs capcom 3 has lots of tutorials and combo videos and variable combos and pretty easy combos generally and can feel satisfying ( i havent played much of infinte)

tekken is also good in that the combos are pretty easy and the game can be played at a low level just doing low/over head, throw, and knowing at least one frame punish.

guilty gear is great and all but the combos can be hard and to play the game without a fighting game base is asking for trouble. however the tutorial of xrd will cross transfer to many games

I dunno man, watch different fighting games and see if you like the combos or movement or mindgames.

not sleeping tonight no sir

>that 2nd form Donald
Jesus Christ

You use it to extend a combo or pressure, usually you do your whole chain (ABC) and at the end you dash so you are in the opponent's face again and you can throw them or start another string or continue your combo if you were comboining them

If you have match videos, try to find some for your characters and see what they do and try to copy it

Why are you asking Sup Forums? Nobody here likes fighting games.

Pokken is a pretty good gateway one: It's got simplified inputs and in general is more about neutral/mindgame play then executional play, but it's still got all the same mechanics and systems as other competitive fighters and the actual skill ceiling for the game is just as high as with others, just with a lower skill floor.

Thanks for the reply, I also am not sure of partners for people since I do know they do make a big difference for character and Mizuumi has nothing on partners for like any characters.

WHY

Also, importantly, the community is super outgoing/passionate and happy to give you advice, and while not absolutely tiny, is small enough that it's not intimidating and people know each other and it's easy to be directed to people for tips/to just message them for advice/questions on the discord (discord.gg/pokken)

SOUL CALIBER

Well this reminded me that I haven't watched Saltybet for a while

Injustice 2 has earnable gear and abilities that change your stats and moves, as well as a ton of replay value with the multiverse and guild stuff

>Frost-tier Characters, which are upgraded versions of Omed-tier characters in terms of coding. These characters use C# rather than M.U.G.E.N's standard C as their programming language, and can have a varying amounts of .exe files at their disposal. These characters are the first on this list to be considered malicious by disabling the task manager.

You can ask about partners in the discord

sf5, no memes

right now is probably the best time to learn GG ever since it's loads easier than before and has a very substantial tutorial
but it's still a harder game than most

Super Smash Bros.

>Dragon-tier
Why has this been allowed to go on?

Despite the controversy of it may or may not being a fighting game, Melee (and Sm4sh I guess) is a really good entry point into fighting games as a whole (or at least, it was for me). Inputs are the same across all characters and comboing is very free form thanks to DI so it'll introduce you to being creative with your combos. You'll also get a good idea of how neutral game works which is a core concept in high level fighting game play. A Gamecube controller is pretty much mandatory though and it'll help to find a local discord channel.
Tekken 7 (3d, very deep, high learning curve) and Street Fighter 5 (2d, fairly easy to pick up) are the big names at the moment if you want to play something with a very active online but they aren't super intuitive and lack good tutorials. However, YouTube has a plethora of fighting game tutorials stretching over every game as well as high level matches, so dig into that for the theory side of things.
Don't get into fighting games if you aren't okay with spending a lot of time playing them though, it also really helps to have a friend to play with as well to get over the first learning curve (roughly 20 hours) of any fighting game.
Also don't fall for the stick meme.

How did we go from Evil Ken to these new cheap characters? REUUUUU why did you die you glorious bastard?

someone post the mugen vid of that one character who instawins and then spams rapid videos of shit from horror movies or horror videos including gore n shit

This.

Fantasy Strike is made for getting into fighting games ASAP.

Found it.

Does anyone have any footage of the legendary dragon cheapie "Mathrus"?

The intro between Ares and Colonel Blue remains one of the hypest things I've ever witnessed, no other video with Ares ever gets it down right either due to usually slowing down.

that was genuinely fun

Tekken 7

>have already lost over 200 games of tekken 7
>only won 18 or so
I know I shouldn't care about winning, but it just feels bad

for honor

youtube.com/watch?v=1DVOs5-WHrQ

Damn what happened to Barrett

Tekken 7.
Just make sure you get it on PC and turn post processing to medium, max out everything else so it won't look like blurry poop.

Tekken 7 has a pretty bad tutorial thing in the story mode, but it has many very beginner friendly characters and characters to suit every playstyle.

Tekken is not a good beginner game if you want to just generically "get into fighting games". First of all it's 3D so it's very different from almost any other fighting game unless you are specifically interested in 3D for Tekken, soul calibur and doa (RIP VF).
Second it has no in game tutorial. Third, it's a game that takes a fuckton of string memorization, frames for punishes and knowledge in general to get to a level where you know what you are doing.

The only beginner friendly aspect of Tekken is having a good playerbase for a fighting game which means many low level players to play against and working matchmaking, but other games like SF and killer instinct have that too.

Well I'm going down a rabbit hole

>Mugen
Still have no idea on how the fuck to find a proper download.

People get into melee to play melee. Most melee players don't give a fuck about other fighters.
