Nintendo wanted the announcement to coincide with their DLC release to maximize profits. BOTW had an upcoming DLC, Mario did not.
They delayed the DLC to the VGAs once they paid for their win.

Zelda has been out longer then mario, so not as many people have gotten to play it/review it.

Zelda games have always gotten more critical acclaim then Mario games because theres more meat to TLoZ.

It was the launch title of the switch, so alot of the success of the system itself is placed on BotW

BotW was a change to the formula that not only worked but met the expectations of fans that expected ALOT from this game where mario was another mario game of the formula we know but with major improvements. Because of this BotW just sticks out more.

Innovation and being groundbreaking is overrated, there's absolutely nothing wrong with a game that does nothing new but just executes on what it does do well.
A game that does everythiing a previous 9/10 or 10/10 game did with little to no changes is still a 9/10 or 10/10 game itself by virtue of being as good.
