I'm thinking Wercheg due to the narrow path there, but even then it's not like the Nords or Vaegirs are any slouch when it comes to forces, and expanding from there takes me to either the Khergits or Nord territory. Or should I go for Praveen, the long way there and the natural forests on the way should be enough to stop forces before they get to my town.

Other games have worse mounted combat. Witcher 3 for example.

Open world game on Cryengine, that's the problem, Cryengine can't handle open world.
It can handle big open levels, but not straight up open world.

I don't know a single game that has good mounted combat. And Witcher 3 and RDR horse barely control any better. The only reason RDR's horse combat isn't utter shit is because of bullet time and guns.
