When he leaves his nest at the start, pick up the scale and examine the markings on the wall, it'll fully upgrade the scoutflies and let you known where he'll land. You can also fast travel to camps when out of combat so the best way to get back to the top is to travel to the ancient forest camp. Also, go in your item box in your tent and get out the flash bombs so you can stop him flying around so much
