Having now played Nier: Automata and a number of other JRPGs my brain has come to a conclusion
JRPGs aren't actually RPGs
You always play some whiny faggot with a defined personality and responses and you never roleplay the character or allow your own personality to affect the game

Who is this Maiden in Black wannabe?

2B or rather TooButt

I think everyone and their mother knows that JRPGs aren't actual RPGs.
Hell, most WRPGs aren't actual RPGs.

You want to be the hero of your own story play divinity 2, Tides of Numanera, or Pillars 1&2. You want Wiffu bait play JRPG’s. I’m ok with both but you can do you.

Looking at your post OP I don't see a difference been you self inserting and playing a whiny faggot

2brap

>allow your own personality to affect the game
That is L I T E R A L L Y the opposite of role-playing.

>divinity 2
might want to define a bit more there mon

divinity 2 is an action RPG, divinity original sin 2 is an RPG. not that divinity 2 is bad, but its not the same as the other games you just rec'd

>ackshually

You do know that role playinggames are not all "create your own donut steel and do what ever you want" right? Most are about get this "role playing" as a set character and getting to expirience things from their point of view

And this is the specimen in his natural habitat. On a Swahilian basket weaving forum. Trying desperately to elucidate what he sees in his head, stringing together words loosely from the English language without truly and fundamentally understanding what they mean. A marvel, to be sure.

Gave me a giggle, thanks user

He's not wrong. If you ask for a top-down RPG and get recommended Divinity 2 you're gonna have a bad time.

2BRAAPP!

Destroyed.

That's because you're playing shitty JRPGs. Play SaGa or something similar if you want something actually good in the genre.

What the fuck is SaGa
I only have a PC and a PS4 right now

To be fair, some SaGa games don't give you a lot of player agency or roleplaying, as much as they end up being excellent games.

Non-linear, sandbox JRPG, complex battle system, wide range of class options/development, and laid-back yet effective story telling. Luckily, there's a remake of Romancing SaGa 2 coming out this Friday on a wide number of platforms, including those two.

You're in for a treat.

I just want more JRPGs like Etrian Odyssey and Dragon Quest IX.

I fucking love party building and doing shit like basing characters off my DnD campaigns, but JRPGs rarely let me do this. And I've had trouble getting into a lot of modern WRPGs, outside of Divinity Original Sin 2.

Some brainlet series that punish you for battling so retards think it's challenging.

Oh, it's the resident brainlet who still says SaGa games punish you for fighting.

>Nier: Automata
>JRPG
what? its a hack n slash game with some shooter parts

The complete history of JRPGs. You're right that theres not much role-playing involved.

>meticulously design the setting and atmosphere of the game
>allow player creation
>player makes a pink oddly-shaped big-nosed tard with a yellow mohawk called DeezNuts2002

You're like 20 years late in coming to that conclusion.

...

How do I fill this hole in my chest after playing Automata? I still can't even believe it happened.

Retards don't realize it's a Platinum action game not a jrpg just ignore them

Is dqix good I hated other L5 games and it looks like content is locked behind Wi-Fi servers that went down

>JRPG
>You want to grind combat and watch the story unfold
>WRPG
>You want to control the story and build your own character

Neither are bad, just different styles.

>I want to play a roleplaying game
>But I just want to be myself instead of playing a role
Fuck
Off

WEIGHT OF THE *FRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTT*

Play Nier Gestalt if you havent

>Most are about get this "role playing" as a set character and getting to expirience things from their point of view
That is literally every game ever.

But you're not playing a role, you're just watching the story unfold without any input.

name one modern western game that is an actual rpg

Nah fuck this guy, play nier replicant

Of course I have but it made me want to play it again. On that none, I don't get why there are so many people that play Automata as their first Nier, just the few tracks that were brought back and remixed made me tear up and get goosebumps. Such an amazing soundtrack.

>Nier
>JRPG

?

I haven't really played any other DQ games, so I don't know how it compares to the rest of the series, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved the character customization aspect and having your own party members.

I do know that DQ fans complained about party members having no personality since you made them yourself, but since I was coming from Etrian Odyssey, that wasn't a problem for me.

It has a shitload of content too. I imagine you'd be able to get the wifi content through Gameshark or Action Replay bullshit, or getting a certain save file with an emulator or flash cart, but I've not looked into it.

>JRPGs aren't actually RPGs
that's why we call them jrpg

>>You want to control the story and build your own character
Except it almost never happens, sure, you can be some slightly different flavours of Nameless One/Nameless Hero/J.C.Denton/Shepard, but at the end of the day, you're still that, you're still Nameless One/Nameless Hero/J.C.Denton/Shepard moving around a web of scripted content, much like you would do in a lot of JRPGs.
It's full of JRPGs that do the same thing, some also give you the option to create your own character AND the choice of altering your background with actual consequences in the game, as in completely different starting scenarios, character builds and endings too.

Not like EOPs would know about them because it's a lot easier to just shitpost on a taiwanese shadow theatre board than playing videogames and discussing seriously about them.

I agree it's frustrating to see so many people just skip the first game and downplay it's importance when they never even played it

I'm not gonna buy a console just for Nier

You've only now come to that conclusion? It's pretty obvious.

Just ordered one for you, it's on the way, Merry Christmas!!!!
