They were kinda shittly built and doubled as a dvd player. So shit broke down from time to time and parents bought and rebought the shit so the kids could shut the fuck about wanting video games on a device that could double as something to watch movies on.
So given how popular and not as bad online piracy was nerds actually bought movies of which made the ps2 more than just vidya console compared to the others

Didn't the PS2 break a lot, come out as a DVD player when DVD players were just becoming a thing to buy, and does this include the fat as well as slim versions for the 13 years it was on sale from 2000-2013??

The DS is extremely close at 154 million, the PS2 sold about a million more but other than that yeah your right.

It's almost like Sony, owner of the Playstation brand as well has audio-visual technology powerhouse who was beginning to invest massively into their increasingly profitable movie-theater department has just made one of the cheapest DVD players exactly when they were becoming the replacement for VHS for standard home-viewing while also having an enormous marketing system in place for all these things combined.

Worked out pretty well for 'em, I'd say.

It's a shame Blu-Ray didn't quite work out the same for them. They'd have projected that the PS3 would sell 200 million. Instead, they misread the market and ended up in massive amounts of debt.

Sony misread a SHITTON of markets and demand after their PS2 launch, that's for sure.

But they hit the sweet spot for what the PS2 could do, who was producing it (themselves) and how all those medias were coalescing into a single, cheaply built system that was already in-place for them. It was a good time.

keep in mind that PS2 was also a no-downsides upgrade(games and accesories were compatible) for the PS1 which already had a massive playerbase

PS2 started with the entire PS1 library capable of playing it. And the PS1 library had reviews and were on sale because they were old. Heard FF was goty? Good news, there's 3 of them and they're all half-price, along with MGS, GTA, Gran Turismo racing games, Tekken, Tomb Raider, Tony Hawk, Resident Evil and 100 other top-sellers, all ready-to-go and equally discounted for being "old." Basically, PS2 was a perfect storm.
