We don't need Sonic Mania 2. We need a full 2D Sonic game led by Taxman that is liberal with its creativity, and doesn't conform to any specific formula. I'm not saying it can't include stuff like Tails and Knuckles, 2 act zone format, etc. I mean more like the power ups, the themes for levels, heck maybe even throw in a new villain to shake things up and allow for more unusual boss designs.

Press Garden, Titanic Monarch, Mirage Saloon and Studiopolis were all a good start, but I want to see that creativity level tenfold.

I liked forces. Story had a starfox-like presentation to it, the character arc for the self-insert rookie was genuinely adorable.
I think they have a good balance of being serious and being self aware that keeps the series from being as Cringy as it was 10 years ago.

I still get a laugh out of the concept for forces, but seeing it in action is kind of heartwarming. I don't know.

There's also a wealth of information regarding the troubled development you can find via Google. Not saying BRB dindu nuffin, but Sega really is to blame for the bulk of Boom's problems. It's development story echoes Sonic '06's which was pretty much exclusively Sega's fault. Well, outside of Sonic Team's questionable design and narrative choices, that is.

Also, the other Boom games weren't even bad. Just kind of mediocre.
