I plan on playing trying Devil May Cry for the first time, i have no idea what the series is about, other than there is a guy named Dante with Swords and Guns or some shit.
What is the best place to start?

This desu. DMC3 might not have the best Dante costume but it has the best DT designs.

DMC1 is a good game but it's very archaic in design since it was basically a frankenstein of hack n slash games and classic resident evil. Give it a shot, but if you don't like it, it's okay to skip it and start with 3. Story isn't that important in these games anyway.

DMC3 Dante is by far the best written at least.

He's kind of a douche in that game that learns to grow up and take responsibilty. Then Ninja Theory went and did the same character arc and seemed to get way more praise for it.

DMC3 Dante does being a bit of a douche better. Just look at his encounters with Jester and with Agni and Rudra. Meanwhile, Donte is an absolute unlikable douche like the entire sequence he confronts Mundus
