That said I don't really think of any sonics post 06 as being really 3d since they rely on 2d segments too often

Adventure is full of jank but it's closest to how Sonic was meant to be in terms of controls.
In terms of boost, Generations or Unleashed's daytime segments. Best of both worlds is the Unleashed Project but that's unofficial.

Utopia, definitely. It could use some more substance, considering it is just a demo of course, but with some more polish on the controls and it'd be the best in a heartbeat. Green Hill Paradise Act 2 is pretty good, too.
