How good is PS2 emulation now? Is it perfect? Is it good enough? What's the current state?
PCSX2 V1.4
Can I play Yakuza 1 and 2 fluently?
perfect. plays all my games perfect except socom 3. cars dont have wheels
Should I render in native res or in 1080p?
It's okay. It's far behind Dolphin, but good enough to finish most games.
Not perfect but almost
I'm not sure if this is a troll question, but native res is shit. Use something higher.
I beat persona 3 FES, smt nocturne, Silent Hill 2 and 3 on it just fine. There is some messing with settings though sometimes. Played a ton of other games too pretty far in with minimal issues. Silent hill 2 has an fmv problem though and some games do have some issues. But yeah pcsx2 is pretty good at this point.
Do you need a good GPU for that?
My PC is pretty shitty
I can play shadow of the colossus with little to no problem currently on the 6th or 7th boss my only concern is that the controls seem a little loose and I use a PS2 controller adapter
Socom 3 work's find with some tweaks. Just google the issue.
We have the same exact cpu. My 3570k is at 4.2 ghz and I think the cpu is more important if I'm not mistaken. Your video card isn't great, but it's worth giving it a shot. I run at 8x native res with no issue, so I would think you should at least be able to run it above native res.
What should I emulate guys?
Burnout?
SotC?
KH2FM?
Isnt it at 1.5?
I played kh2fm for the first time on pcsx2 a few years ago and it was pretty cool. If you can't play the ps4 version then it's a good way to go.
Did nobody tried to emulate Yakuza?
You can download 1.5, but 1.4 is the current stable version, I think.
It's not perfect, had to download some patches for Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2
Can it emulate ace combat yet?
>. It's far behind Dolphin,
>but has higher compatability
what did he mean by this
After console wars...is this the start of emulator wars?
For yakuza software mode is a lot less glitchy than hardware.
This is Shadow of the Colossus in PCSX2 1.4. It's fair to say that there is still a lot to be desired.
yes, but youtube how to do it right and save the settings otherwise say hello to crashes and black bars galore.
its a lot easier to objectively measure the state of emulators rather than consoles
consoles are basically identical and only shitbabies whine about the slight differences. compared to emus which will only be able to play a % of a systems library, at a % of the fps, etc etc, all which can be measured to say this emu is actually better than another emu
Yes.
>how good is ps2 emulation
better
>is it perfect?
hell no
>is it good enough?
nope
>whats's the current state?
it's fundamentally trash, needing different plug-ins for every game
1.4 is archaic and even then tat game emulated well, you just aren't doing it right.
but 1.4 is the current stable
PCSX2 is pretty good, it doesn't deserve most of the flak it gets everywhere. Emulator users are entitled little cunts who want everything working in specific ways, with complete disregard for what the devs want and can do so they can pirate games.
It will never be dolphin, because the PS2 is a much more complicated (if not powerful) machine than the gamecube.
At the end of the day, it runs a vast majority of the games you throw at it at decent speeds, provided you don't use a caveman processor.
its pretty good. I played through kings field 4 not to long ago & ran nice
I've recently played through Ratched & Clank 1-3 on 1.4 and besides a few dips at the beginning of the level those games ran great.
It's one of the best emulators out there, but it needs a 64-bit version, though. Some Vulkan and DX12 plugins would be alright, also.
Vulkan, yes. But literally nobody uses DX12
How about they optimize the accurate software renderer.
That's there for compatibility purposes, I don't think it's the intended way of running it. The emu itself is more CPU bound than GPU, anyway.
Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria is still unplayable and it makes me sad. I fear it never will be.
Exactly. I'd rather have an accurate emulator than a fancy looking one.
Even MGS3 and SOTN?
I've played Yakuza 1 on it
It's functional but you're going to have to fuck with setting on a case-by-case basis to get most games to look/function right.
screw stable versions, get the latest dev version for emulators, always
>Is it perfect?
No, far from it.
>Is it good enough?
For a lot of games, yes.
Don't use stable builds when it comes to emulation. They're often years out of date, and not stable - devs usually release a new stable build because it's just been a long time since the last one, and then they call whatever the latest random dev build is stable.
Only Dolphin actually has month(s) long feature freezes and regression testing for their stable releases, but because of that they only do stable builds every few years. Which means you miss all the performance and compatibility improvements and new features.
I'll concede that 1.5 makes a hell of a lot of difference
stable version is shit and hasnt been updated in more than a year.
Get the latest dev build for sure.
I remember emulating god of war 2 on my old rig a few years ago without major issues. I just tried it again on a modern rig (i7 7700k, gtx 1080, etc.) and the graphics are broken. Many other games I tried are fine tho.
Emulation has come a long way but it's still hit and miss.
I played most of Yakuza 1 but couldn't get cutscenes to stop just making popping noises.
I've been playing Raidou Kuzonoha just fine and it has been fun.
Haven't bought a controller for it but it is neccesary or can I ace some game with keyboard only?
Its patheticly behind the times.
We should have full ps2 library on vita and smartphones by now.
Your phone will play sm4sh before it will play DMC
I remember 5 running just fine, but no idea about 4.
it could be waay the fuck more optimized if sorny released some documentation
they must still be planning BC on their shit
well theres money behind wiiu emulation so yeah of course it's gonna go faster.
>tfw okami is finally pristine looking
>perfect
>except for that time when it's not perfect
>get the latest buggy shit
Yeah, nah.
this really sucks, PS2 has a great library and is remembered by retards as one of the best consoles ever made and was the king in sells for a good while.
Why is its emulation so shit?
Can I play Soul Reaver 2 and Defiance good now? Always had texture problems and slight crashes when I tried.
or stick with outdated shit with tons of issues that got fixed, it's your choice
What about CITRA?
Can I finally play 4U/XX at decent framerate 1080p/4k?
the emulator is fine
If you want to be able to play the ace combat games you need to use a 1.5 dev build
Shit son is that AC04?
Played flawlessly for me.
"unstable" dev versions are 98% of the time more stable than the last stable version, the "instability" comes from the fact that it's gonna be updated next week
Its great but not nearly as perfect as Dolphin emulation.
Also be careful when playing the games on really high resolutions.
First time I tried playing Steambot Chronicles in 6x resolution my PC froze really bad.
A handful of games doesnt work well in hardware mode.
Oh wow they work now? How do they run?
so, yes, and Dolphin >>>> PSX2
this is my first time emulating and im playing persona 4. so far no problems, the only thing is the sound lag when i save. is there anything i should know? i dont want to drop the game at half because of some bug
I played 2 in 4k I think.
It still had some graphical glitches with the post processing but other than that I played it from start to finish fine.
>start
That shit has already been going on for over 20 years.
you know it
you might get slowdowns here and there, but overall they run pretty well
I don't know about any other games, but I played DQ8 on it and I didn't run into a single problem.
Looks great in 4k. Artstyle really shines.
>Artstyle really shines
you bet your ass it does
is ryzen any good for emulation?
Yes. It's just a bit worse than newest Intel i5/i7
Depends on game. Some games work perfectly, some lack shadows or get weird fps drops, some are still like jack and dexter 3 (textures missing).
Beautiful. And timeless.
I could see myself replaying it in 10 years from now.
So it works fine on hardware mode?
Please tell me the lens flare when the sun is on screen isn't a gigantic corrupt jpeg anymore.
I never beat any of the AC games, do I skip the ps1 games?
It still is. Your plane still black in cutscenes and 3rd person too.
>New PC for the first time in over a decade
>Always wanted to emulate PS2
>Make the stupid decision to try Xenosaga first thing
>Emulating at 4k
>Opening scene looks shit shit, but whatever
>In-game scenes start, it's jaggy as fuck
>"What the fuck am I doing wrong?"
>Try googling for answers, nothing
>Give up and wait for gameplay
>It looks great
>The "in-game" cutscene was prerendered
>The whole game is filled with these jaggy, pre-rendered cutscenes made to look like they were done in-game
>Lots of other PS2 games do this, apparently
>mfw
AC3 is pretty good. Better than 4 in my opinion.
can PCSX read your iso code and apply plugins with the recommended settings automatically?
You can start with the ps2 games. AC4, AC5, and AC0 are the holy trinity of ace combat games
There are some minor issues, just enable some videos options specifically for AC games - I think it's called "align sprite" in the plugin settings
PCSX2 and Dolphin swapped places, now Dolphin is stable and works well while every new PCSX2 build breaks something.
pcsx2 bonus
does PCSX2 run all of the SMT games fine?
Yeah the whole Persona series is pretty easy to run.
Just play it in software mode, 4, 5 and 0 are all perfect.
Admittedly AC is one of the games that probably would benefit from being rendered in HD but frankly i'm happy just to be able to play them again.
pretty sure they fixed AC just like okami and mgs3
PCSX2 has always had a bunch of issues. It was just "good" compared to N64 emulation or Saturn.
>Just play it in software mode
>framedrops even on a 6600k @4.4GHz
>512x448 with only the PS2's shitty edge AA
No thanks. I'll take a few glitches over that anytime.
How is Nintendo 64 emulation doing?
still shit, as always.
there's a weird shadow glitch for me
...
>have a 4790k currently at standard clocks
>no framedrops
>not a graphics fag so 512x448 is perfect, if not better for me than playing a bastardized upscale with a fuckload of horrible glitches like black lines on the screen, black planes, cutscenes not working, lens-flare being a QR code etc...
512x448 looks terrible on a 1080p+ screen
