Dug up an interview from Narita (development head) and Yoshihara (artist) on how the series was made during UNIEL'S port so I'll post some tidbits as the night goes on.

How do I Orie?

Learn how to delay your normal strings and reverse beats, her pressure is really strong if you can keep her in the opponent's space.
j.214A/B can be paired with her Force Function to cross them up. That and a trick I use is 214A > FF >j214A and into more pressure afterwards.
A lot of optimized combos use the 3B anti-air but even I haven't touched those yet.
Ending some of your lighter confirms with a 22A is also beneficial.

I don't think I've ever said backdash had no invuln but it really does depend on a character's backdash speeds. Hyde and Gordeau's happen to be one of the faster ones.

The series was thought up around 2008-2009, work was finishing up Melty Blood and the team wanted to utilize their newfound knowledge and experience to make their own game. Enter Yoshihara Seiichi who shows off some designs that he had in his highschool sketchbook and the team decide to roll with it. The first and earliest designs of the game were Linne, Carmine, and Hilda. Linne was the initial protagonist, Carmine showed off the neutral side of the setting's conflicts, and Hilda was set up to be a villain. The whole theme of fighting during the night was a concept the team was able to get behind and the series started off from there. At that time, a concrete story wasn't determined and all they had were organizations like the Yato, Licht Kreis, and Amnesia fighting.

Even in the current story Linne is more of a protagonist honestly.The only reason hyde is considered the protag is because of his macguffin sword right?

It's so fun to use but yeah, I'm realizing it the hard way.

Hyde's conception was in interesting one.
The team needed a dynamic for Linne but designing a proper main character was easily the development team's biggest hurdle. They called in Mori from Arcsys to try and pinpoint a design for a "main character look" and they made up a few more designs. What they initially agreed upon was pic-related where Linne was the little girl that a considerably older Hyde would protect, a la Lone Wolf and Cub. Some darker aspects of the proto-story was written but disputes on the setting proper however decreed that they needed to tone it down a bit. They wanted to aim for the contemporary, urban fantasy type feel and a wandering duo didn't fit their narrative, which was later repurposed. They aimed for an in-between for a complete fantasy like Blazblue with some modern aspects and decided that a highschool protag would make things the easiest, especially as a character to enter the setting from a new perspective.

lol considering how successful Last of Us was, I think the wandering duo of an older guy and young girl in an urban fantasy setting would have been just fine.

Only 20% of Old Hyde remains in the one we have now, the other 80% was repurposed to fit the new setting they chose. Hyde's current design, right down to the color of his uniform and his personality is the culmination of the team finally agreeing what they wanted with the setting.
But in a fighting game though?

I dunno, maybe it would fit better in a 2v2 style game like crosstag. Also byakuya is literally the less important part of a duo, so I think it could work. I do think the design definitely might not have been as successful for Japanese audiences. But they definitely love their shonen.

As mentioned before, Linne went from first protagonist, to the younger of the duo, but they decided to stick with the younger part of her character and roll with it. Waldstein was another early design they finalized and made to be half of the duo. Linne's design was intentionally made to not stand out much, both according to her personality and the team wanting to keep her design conventional as the other characters they designed were flashy enough. The yellow color of her hoodie was meant to evoke a similar feeling of looking at the moon out in the dead of night.
Byak as a character is inconsequential compared to whatever thing is inside him.

Carmine is arguably one of the least changed designs. A hemomancer like character was something the team wanted to work on for a long time but the team had the issue of worrying over if the constant splattering of blood would increase the age rating of the game and that's where the whole crystallized blood aesthetic of his attacks were made.

Orie, from the start of development, was originally envisioned as a man. Londrekia utilized a rapier and was going to be the actual puppet character of the game where he carried around a coffin with a chained up void inside. For being a bit too complex to make at the start, and for the simple reason being that they didn't have enough girls in the series, the rapier wielding justice person was made into Orie, a much more purer, straightforward "good guy". The color blue did a good job of conveying something fresh, sacred, and organized.

that third design looks cool. Shame we got Orie because quota's instead of an actual good female design.

Gordeau came really late into the game's concept stage and he was initially meant to fight exclusively with his nail/claws. The entire theme of his robber/snatcher design with him taking some resource away from you was there from the start. The team decided that the whole claw thing was too subtle and they added in the sickle afterwards.
That's why Londrekia didn't go away and is an established character now, although the rapier and puppet parts of his design were used on other characters.

That third design sucks. The first and second look better.

Vatista was supposed to be a bit taller and with a slightly different hairstyle back in the early designs. The team unashamedly mention that a fetishistic element to her clothes were intentional but they utilized a goth-loli dress to better reflect the modern day she wakes up in.

Phonon is character that they didn't include in this overview because this was still during UNILE's console port but as you can clearly see, she was there since the start, although they planned on giving her glasses.

Right from the start, Seth was made with the intention of having another character related to the Yato and the design team states that he think they did a great job with his move-list and its visuals. That repurposed 80% of Old Hyde's character and the darker elements of the concept-stage's plot turned into Seth as reflected in the hair and his relationships in the story.
It took a while to make him not-ragna, plus Mori was there for a bit.

because if you read the post hippie made, Mori the creator of Blazblue, and by extension Ragna came to help out with Hyde's design.

So there's another world where Gordeau shitters don't get to spam MORTAL SLIDE and GRIM REAPER.

With an already overly serious cast of characters in tow, the head of development stated that this was getting too serious and they need a light-hearted character to ease it down. Yuzuriha was made with this in mind, with her entire design philosophy being the light-hearted girl in a setting where everyone is fighting for their life. The kimono + jeans combo was meant to represent the union of her family's value of ancient traditions and their acceptance of the modern day amenities, the melding of past and present day tastes.

X, remember that the third hit of byakuya's rekka is punishable on block. I would probably recommend 2B as a starter for your punish.

Hilda as already mentioned was one of the earliest designed characters, even her abilities related to summoning weapons around her to fight and protect herself with. The noblewoman aesthetic remains to this day.
Chaos was apparently always meant to be a brainiac and was initially meant to be the student council president of the school Hyde went to, which would of have made him the boss of the group Phonon was a part of . Looks like he always meant to be a person in charge, but they changed his position.

To cap things off, Nanase and Byakuya were intentionally made with little regard to the existing factions, this was the series' first foray onto consoles and the relative newness to the characters was intended.

I'll also chime in to say that if you have 200 meter, you should and try finish someone off with a 236C > Veil Off > IW. It's the same trick Carmine can do with his 22C

You're surprisingly optimistic about your chances of winning when you don't have a main and just found a BnB. Merk has a better understanding of mechanics and probably has better reflexes than I do. I wouldn't put getting a legitimate win on him for a while, let's be real here

Hyde's a highschooler, their wardrobes are filled with copies of the same uniform.
