Not explained in the movie is that the protagonist is the penultimate person in a careful bit of selective breeding to create a psychic super-weapon to kill a race of trans-dimensional alien invaders who are so technologically advanced so as to be untouchable through physical means (and the ancient aliens fighting them lean towards psychic powers too). The green flying alien is parallel attempt to breed such a weapon, though it didn't get as far along. There are two other parallel-weapon-attempt alien races in the books that didn't get into the movie.
