I think they actually WANTED to create something larger than life. Seems like they were a group of guys who genuinely cared about their video game.Their ambitions got the best of them, and everyone was too busy telling them how awesome it was to stop them.

They were Nintendo sleeper agents designed to steal money from Sony. It's pretty obvious from how they look that these guys are more at home with a Switch.
