i hate bonehoard

>Thief
>Template thread
The builders would be proud and disapproving at the same time.

why? too easy?

Not enough confusing identical-looking areas and obscure puzzles.

if you actually make it out of there, prepare your anus for Thieves Guild

...

I don't think that level was even playtested.

Holy shit, that was infuriating. I hate that guy in that room too, fucker ruins my no knock out run.

the entire map does this

how the fuck do you get past the barmaid near the entrance without knocking her out?

>Aww yeah imma thief breaking into a thief guild
>Fuck yeah rappelling down the kitchen garbage chute
>Cool casino
>Man how long have I been playing this level for?

I had this problem so I just started going in through the front door. There are candles you can hit with water arrows on the ceiling there to sneak by the two guards patrolling. She becomes a factor again when you try to drop down with your rope arrow through the chute in the sleeping quarters upstairs. Stick to the side and she can't see shit.

It's really easy to get lost down there if you aren't constantly checking your map and having your compass out. Luckily you have one of the more detailed series of maps for the game in that level.

some other user made this

Is anyone thinking of entering the 20th Anniversary map making contest?

Deadline is nearly a year from now, so even if you've never touched DromEd there's time to learn, and since its vanilla themed there's no pressure to get fancy. It's a great opportunity to get started.

Is it weird that I get aroused every time I hear Garrett talk?

that's gay

I'd suspect something's wrong if you didn't.

That needs to add in OpenAL HRTF set up tutorial, then you have actual positional audio.

How's that different from EAX and how do you set it up?

This makes a huge difference, listen to this guy. It's like night and day with headphones, I thought the audio was good enough before but boy, was I wrong.

pretty sure the pic is just for people who are looking to get into the game, putting in something like that will just deter them

I'd like to know the difference too, between "setting it up properly" and only using EAX either with the OpenAL fix or with a soundcard (what I use).

I'm not asking how to do it, just if it's even necessary. I had a good tutorial link once, from Reddit but I forgot the address.

>tfw no source code release so someone could implement VR

Far more clarity, it is way easier to tell what direction something is coming from with headphones on. Is it necessary? No, I've completed the game without it and been able to tell where guards and thing are coming without it as well, but it is better. You can tell right away from just listening to the difference in Garrett's footsteps.

we need this now

This nigga comes and slaps your girl-taffer on the ass then swooces away, what do you do?

Just to clarify, I am using a Sound Blaster Z card and in Thief's sound option I have Open AL EAX enabled.

I wanted to know if there is a difference between the long HRTF tutorial from what I am using right now? Because I obviously realize there's a huge difference between EAX and having it disabled all together.

Sorry if the posts seem redundant.

and this would probably be very difficult to implement but imagine if it had head tracking so you could lean for real

>pretty sure the pic is just for people who are looking to get into the game, putting in something like that will just deter them

>better just to assume people are retarded and lazy than to give them useful information!

Get out.

*And I have headphones, naturally.

>thiaf

not weird at all
youtube.com/watch?v=PT2bkIEQA6A

Danke, I tried playing this but the controls made me wanna puke and I had trouble trying to remap them.

>I had trouble trying to remap them.
How do you manage to feed yourself?

>that room where 50 lasers come down at once in the shape of a hammer and give you a fucking heart attack
>that room where the lasers play We Will Rock You

damn dude relax

>Open AL EAX enabled
that's what you want, I'm not sure about what tutorial you mean, but you've got what you need enabled.

Your retardation is of more concern than my relaxation.

You know what, I didn't follow the conversation properly. I don't what HRTF is, I only know of the audio difference between OpenAL EAX on versus having it off, which is significant.

>mfw doing my very first playthrough of this right now
>mfw just finished the Bonehoard on expert

I love the grave robbing shit so far, hope there's more to come.

>stand above some open tomb
>start rappelling down
>some old man ghost tells you not to take his stuff
>fires off some lame traps to deter you
>rob his grave
you snooze you lose old man

youre really cool buddy

Alright so I bought Thief Gold and Thief 2 but I suck some serious dick. Here's some troubles I'm having.

>Struggle to determine the right distance to swing the blackjack, half the time I miss the swing, and the other I touch the guard before I swing
>Can't determine what alerts guards, sometimes a noise will put them into permanent searching mode until they search the entire room and find me and other times they look around and fuck off
Also, does using distant objects to make noise alert guards permanently, as in, do they become more alert after checking something suspicious? And do guards notice the moss from arrows or lights being extinguished? Anything I should know so I don't get my ass fucked without quicksave spamming?

did you play the tutorial? it should teach you all about how to avoid detection

And yet, your retardation is still of more concern than my coolness.

I'm just going to shill this thing here because it looks neat and apparently it's going to come out at some point. No idea where it's at now though, this video is like two years old youtube.com/watch?v=ZJ8zz0pY9oA

I did, but I still don't know exactly what's doing. Sometimes I can extinguish a light directly above a guard and sometimes not, and terrain and sound I understand, but sometimes guards just won't give up looking for me.

>fuck you!
every time

Prepare for thy pounding.

you can always make a getaway(slowly) into another room, also just because you see a path thats really bright but theres a guard doesnt mean theres not an alternate route

taffers

Guards don't notice moss, they can take note of lights being extinguished but I don't think it should alert them unless you've already put them on edge. As far as knockouts, as long as you're behind them, you can actually bump into them without them noticing so find a room with a guard and some carpet and get a feel the distances.

I kinda want to do a playthrough where I just live with my mistakes. No savescumming, if I fuck up I just deal with it for the rest of the level without bunnyhopping

I remember seeing this. I don't know, if I want to play Thief I'll just play Thief.

>head-related transfer function (HRTF)

I think this is what I was referring to:
reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/1fzonq/psa_for_games_using_openal_including_minecraft/

Which is why I questioned the post:
When he said the image needed to add:
>OpenAL HRTF set up tutorial, then you have actual positional audio

Anyway I've played through the game with EAX enabled several times now, just wanted to know the difference. It's still inconclusive.

So limit yourself to one safety-save at the start of each level.

I see, thanks for answering my questions. I guess what's happening is I end up making too much noise when coming up behind a guard with the blackjack and I related it to likely having run into the guard. But if the ground is silent then I'll be more confident in my approach.

And about the light and moss, thanks for the info, I couldn't tell what was alerting some guards to extinguishing lights and others not, but that makes sense.

Blackjack goes further than you may think, just looking at the swing it doesn't appear that way but it do. Guards have a few alert modes, I think. If they see a light go out in front of them, they generally don't like that and start searching. But if they're coming into a room or a hallway where you put out a light and they didn't directly see it happening, they usually just comment and move on. Permanent search is usually when they full-on see you or even catch a glimpse of you. Sometimes it is hard to predict how they will react to any given situation. Experimentation is key.

Using the blackjack is the sign of an amateur. Don't use it.

I might actually one day pick up Dishonored 2, once it goes down in price.

I'm rather pleased to hear that voice again, even though it's not as witty as Garret at all

Yeah basically. It's so easy to get into that mode where I just keep reloading if a section doesn't go exactly the way I want. I think I actually played one level without reloading, the guards got alerted and then I just ran around with everyone looking for me trying to do the thing

>that dead guard in the mouse trap

Running and jumping makes more sound than walking, and different surfaces makes varying amounts of sound.
Goes something like moss

>Played for a total of maybe 2 hours
>Oh, don't use this because you'll look like a rookie
Nigga, I barely remember the key bindings and you want me to drop the linchpin vital to my progress?

Does the blackjack operate the same way as melee in System Shock 2? A lot of people have trouble hitting things in SS2 because naturally people assusme the hit lands on the center of the screen, but actually the collision only happens if the actual model collides with the enemy so you have to kinda align your hits so that they properly connect

>started getting into Thief
>playing on high difficulty
>first mission is pretty fucking neat
>eventually get to crypt mission
>drop the game after getting lost too much
>undeads fucking everywhere
>months have passed now
Should I just man up and finish it, or should I just go to Thief 2?

finish it you knob

>Use Unreal 4
>Make it look like Minecraft

Impressive.

Whip out that compass and just buckle up

It's just pretty cool trying to clear everything without anybody noticing anything. It's a bit silly since it's a tool they put into the game and you're artificially limiting yourself but it adds another layer

Those are the best playthroughs 2bh. I was doing that once in Deadly Shadows, trying to ghost as long as possible and then using everything at my disposal once shit hit the fan WITHOUT incapacitating anyone.
>that adrenaline rush when you get spotted, have to hide ASAP and have to change all your routes to account for the suspicious guard

I think those were just some type of early dev grafics since the newer video of a menu test looks more textured

>sneak around
>wear the noisiest shoes possible

What is the canon reason for this tomfoolery

>tfw TBP is the only game I feel hype for

I'm going to give you some pagan-tier advice, if you really can't stand the level and it'll stop you from ever playing it again.

Ctrl + Alt + Shift + End

>not playing blackjack simulator
>not going out of your way to knock out every single guard and put them in a pile

I guess I'll have to try this, now I'm curious.

Things always sound louder when you're trying to be quiet.

Do guards wake up by themselves or do they only wake up if other guards find them?

Finish it, you're just starting to get to the good levels.

What does this do?

i dont think ive ever been in a level long enough to know

Deletes System 32, don't do it.

Only if they get waken up by a third party.

Skips the level. Don't listen to that pleb.

It skips the level.

Rad, thanks

Whack em and stack em, they aint ever waking up.

youtube.com/watch?v=zVSZXhik1Y8

They never do.

what the christ

HERESY

I don't think so, I honestly haven't played enough SS2 to make the comparison. I think you just need to practice using it. Just load up a level and just start whacking everyone.

Hey man, I don't use it, it's why I referred it as a pagan thing to do.

TFix fucked up my copy. Now all the torches give off light even after being extinguished.

Someone gave a great answer, I thought, to this once. Think of the places that Garrett ventures, in the sewer, various crypts and haunted mines, and all sorts of places with foul things to step on. Would you want to wear your socks or something similar with a soft sole in those areas?

Did you start a new game after installing it?

No. I'll try it.

That's a terrible answer.

Leather is durable and resilient whilst still being soft and quiet.

You don't need to wear clogs just to go traipsing through a mine.
