Staff kept trying to innovate on neat technical stuff at the cost of not doing actual work on games - Until the creative guys who worked on delivering art & stories left. Also the tech guys would get fired after Valve realised that a lot of their r&d stuff wasn't worth it.

This. The only worthwhile thing Valve has put out with their tech development bullshit was the Vive. Who gives a shit about the steam controller or steam machine? Those resources could've been put to Half Life 3 and it probably would've made more money for them.

Basically the same ones people play on legacy Windows. The only things you can't play on Linux right now are UWP D3D12 exclusive games, and thankfully there's barely any of those.

Why would Valve put money towards game development anymore when they're already making a metric fuckload of money off Steam?

Because they need an idea to steal for a FPS.
They have no new concept for Episode 3, so they are waiting for someone to come up with it.
Then they will buy it, pour money onto it and make a game happen with that.

So if you want to make it happen, create an innovative FPS. And be ready to make it bigger and better.

Because Microsoft can turn off the money spigot at any time, though realistically it won't happen till at least 2020 when they EOL Windows as we know it today.

They have a new engine, and game concepts. They just want to avoid what happened in the past and have everything ready to go at just the right time. So people don't just switch to play one game for cards or in game items and then switch back.

Does anybody really care about Half Life 3 at this point? The average gamer is over 30. I enjoyed the first game, but I don't get the hype. It would never live up to what you are expecting. The Last Jedi would like to have a word with anybody that expects it to. Your childhood is dead.

As far as i know the entire HL2 could be a dream that Gordon has while in stasis. HL2 needs to be gone and EP3 is the only way we can bury the book for good.

Valve nearly went broke twice making two Half Life games.
Valve tried experimenting with the episodic model to make money more consistently, but they still sucked at releasing games on time.
Then VALVe hit the jackpot with multiplayer games like TF2, CS:GO and DotA 2.
They tried to cram the whole item economy thing into Portal 2 but it didn't work, of course. So no more single player games. They get money for doing nothing now.
