Automata was only meant to target 2 niches, Platinumfags and Drakengardfags. I don't think anyone expected it to blow up and sell past 1 million at the most, but between 2B's huge ass and the radical style afforded by actually having a team that could make his artistic vision a reality, it caught on.
Even if they pushed Nier 1 as hard as Automata, it would never have gotten the groundswell, because it looked like trash despite the great taste. Platinum knowing how to actually program and being willing to do anything, unlike Squeenix telling Yoko Taro no, let him create a visual spectacle with widespread appeal.
