10 Years of SSBB

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is coming up on it’s 10th Anniversary. What does Sup Forums think?

>10 years

why

I think Brawl is the single biggest downgrade from sequel to sequel in video game history, at least in the gameplay department.I swear I played Brawl for a total of three hours before saying "I remember Melee being a lot better." Popped in my Melee disk and surprising nobody I was right, Melee was WAY more fun to play.

brawl was fucking terrible.
i was here for japan time and knowing all the content the game had before we even played it was retarded in the end.

Project M is the best thing that came out of this piece of shit game.

>Melee is way more fun to play

That I've not played it for 9 years.

10 years of disappointment.

For real though, me and my friends weren't tourneyfags, none of us even knew what L Cancelling was, yet we went back to Melee within 2 months.
And not even just went back to Melee, when somebody asked "Hey wanna play Smash Bros?" there wasn't even a followup question on which one, just fucking put in Brawl immediately.

No reason to quote that.

Smash Dojo was the single most brilliant marketing tool I've ever fucking seen for literally anything. I'm surprised I haven't seen anything like it since.

Brawl is a shit game, 4 is what Brawl should've been. I don't necessarily agree with Sakurai's direction with the series but Brawl is what happens when it's executed poorly and 4 is what happens when it's executed reasonably well.

>prerelease hype was better than the game itself
fug

>Tfw I was 11 when Brawl came out
At the time when I had no melee or 64 (since they got scratched up/lost.), I thought it was an amazingly large game. The story was big and multiplayer pretty good.
Nowadays I don't find it as appealing anymore. It's a bit too slow, and the stupid tripping mechanic is retarded. There were some odd choices of stages. Some good like Wario Ware, Castle Siege, Norfair and Yoshi's Island, and some terrible ones like Mario Bros, Mushroomy Kingdom, Rumble Falls and New Pork City. Some items are just outright broken, such as the golden hammer, smart bomb and the timer.
Personally wish Sakurai had not slacked off with this game trying to cater to the anti competitive crowd, because it in the end it just affected everyone with FUCKING TRIPPING and slow battles. If it only had slow battles it would have been fine, but tripping makes the game beyond unfun to replay. I'm glad Sm4sh was a better version of brawl, because it shows that formula can be done well, but Sakurai was just being a hack with Brawl, without sounding like MeleeFag.

I still go to weekly project M tournaments. Brawl is actually really fascinating in all the little ways that it's shitty, like how frame 7 after leaving the ground doesnt accept inputs for some reason.

...

this happened to me except with PSABR, that game was fun as fuck when I first played it (i was in college), but after playing a ton of melee and going back to it everything felt so limited

It was great game and anyone who doesn't like it because muh melee is a colossal faggot, case dismissed.

I liked both, Melee, and Brawl
same goes to for WiiU
on the other hand, never owned Melee by myself and rented it only from a friend, and I was never a huge competitive player on the other hand

It is my favourite in the series. Smash 4 is soulless in comparison

Brawl was a mistake. Only good thing about it was Japan Time.

good argument

Why did they make brawl slower? what the FUCK was going on through Sakurai's mind. 10 years later im still titled thinking about it.

64 is way more fun then smash 4 and brawl combined.

smash 4 ledge mechanics make me want to stab my own eyes out

he didnt want the better player to dominate the worse player. it was retarded logic. the better player is always going to win and he's gimping his own mechanics in order to let that happen. NO ONE thought melee was too fast while melee was the only game available. People say that now because they were subjected to weenie hut jr the game.

Obviously made Brawl slower than Melee so that it was more accessible, and 64 is by far the slowest, what the fuck are you talking about

This stuff is why I think Brawl is more entertaining to watch than Smash 4.

so who did you main, anons?

That's PM tho

Mine is similar to your's but it went something like this:
>64
Link
>Melee
Link
>Brawl
Link
>PM
Captain Falcon
>Smash 4
Captain Falcon
>64
Captain Falcon
>Melee
Captain Falcon
>Tfw you get one balls deep off stage knee gimp and you realize how wrong you've been throwing boomerangs off stage this whole time.

Nope, it's vanilla Brawl.

yeah mine's changed too. I now play falcon in melee and sonic in PM. Still don't play smash 4 though.

pm removed the bike for wario.

Part of it was that Brawl was designed to be playable on anything from wired GameCube controllers to sideways wireless Wiimotes. The slowness, the much lower gravity/falling speed/etc., the bigger windows on everything like jumpsquat frames, the input buffer, the lack of comboability which casuals would never be able to do, the magnetic ledges, it was all so shitty player could play the game on their shitty controllers with less of a disadvantage.

Ruined an entire series.

did you know that theres a random 1-3 frames of lag on GC controllers intentionally programmed in, in order to increase parity with wireless controllers?

>random tripping
Yeah Melee is better

>Using Project M as example
Faggot

Marth in maylay, Lucas in PM. I'm probably going with Ness on 4xM once I get around to buying a new SD card.

I can use any game besides brawl and it will look more interesting than the worst game in the series.

still a great game for everything but more serious play, and Project M exists for that so its all good.

PM is underrated as a casual game though as well. If it had come out instead of brawl, Melee would have instantly died no question

lucas main, that's a hard life.

does anyone know if the input buffer in brawl is 6 or 10 frames i forget

Brawl was a fun casual game, but it was a pretty big downgrade. Unlike you, I remember playing the game for a while, a couple months maybe, and just wondering why it wasn't as fun to play as Melee, and the more I played it, the more I realized that I hated the slower gameplay, the floatier physics, tripping, and so on.

I do miss Snake a lot though.

I still fondly think back to the times where Lucas had a shine and was considered OP.
But at least all the top tiers are Brawl characters, so Melee players don't have it as easy anymore as back when Fox was the best.

Fox was never the best, the people who said that were retarded. in 3.0 best was lucas diddy mewtwo in some particular order. They never nerfed his "shine" in between though so you still have it. I think a huge reason melee players have it harder is that PM dedicated players learned their characters better and so they have better matchup knowledge.

snake hitboxes were ridiculous

Does anyone have the gif of three or so guys running off of Mario Bros/75m, whichever one it is?

That's part of what made him fun to play. Sometimes it's okay when Sakurai makes a character fucking busted.

>that hitbox on his u-tilt

God, yes. I hope Snake comes back someday, one way or another. Or at least reuse his moveset for someone like Sami from Advance Wars (which would never happen; I'd prefer if she got a new moveset anyway).

Brawl still has the best single player content. I could never get into Sm4sh because all the solo modes were 100% pure cancer.

He was modeled after Ganondorf.

i have no idea what youre saying but i'm interested

that was a total accident, originally he was bigger and they never took the time to shirink the the hitboxes. Having a strong character is fun. having a character than can hit you from halfway across the stage and blatantly breaking the rules of how a hitbox should work is not very reasonable, nor fun for anyone but the snake.

I need to go back still and do all of the events, finally beat arcade on 9.0 difficulty, etc., but aside from that cancerous Angry Birds-esque mode, I liked 4's single player content better. SSE was fucking garbage and a huge disappointment for me.

But that shit was hilarious tho. It was like:

>"Hey, Snake's in Smash."
>"Oh yeah, he's also hilariously OP, have fun dealing with his bullshit!"

I want Snake back

>SSE was fucking garbage and a huge disappointment for me

Agreed, the boss rush and all-stars is where it's at. They're genuinely hard at the hardest difficulty, while you could breeze through SSB and Melee you actually have to git gud, especially all-star with its one life.

The Zelda and Pokémon rounds haunt my nightmares.

maybe in concept its kinda funny, but once you actually want to play the game it loses its charm after a while and you kind of just want a reasonable character to play against.

That list is fucking garbage.

melee all star mode on hardest difficulty is nearly impossible to one continue, even best in the world cant do it nearly consistently.

made by number 3 in the PR, has 10x the PM knowledge you have. But i'll bite, what's wrong with it

>Agreed, the boss rush and all-stars is where it's at.
Agreed, I did like Brawl's boss rush, at least. Cut out a lot of the fluff. Honestly, I'd kinda like something like SSE again but not as fucking boring and with a storyline that wasn't convoluted and, again, fucking boring. A huge Nintendo crossover story should not be as drab and uninteresting as SSE was. Let the characters speak ffs.

Either that, or give me a better arcade mode for the next one.

Also, I forgot to mention that I did hate that 4 did away with Break the Targets.

Well I never played Brawl seriously so I wouldn't know I guess. I could imagine that it'd be annoying to fight against.

The problem is it took a ton of effort to make individual BTT for every character, and if you make one that every character can complete it's so homogeneous that it ends up being simplistic as fuck

Ivy squir and ROB are nowhere near that good. Marth Tink Lucas and shiek are too low. Yoshi is too high Roy and Link are too low.G&W and snake are too high.

Sometimes you just have to wonder what kind of life people who are this fucking good a smash live.

yeah, I mean, you're right. Making BtT for every character by this point would be exhausting and probably take a lot of resources, so I kinda don't expect them to for the next one either, but I don't have to like it. It's kind of a shame, really.

I liked Smash Run or at least the idea of it.

You couldn't pay me to play Vanilla Brawl.

Project M is fucking great.

Smash 4 is better. Mostly because the controls on the wiimote sucks.

One of my favorite games of all time.

ivysaur and ROB have guaranteed edgeguards on half the cast and solar beam is actually braindead to combo into which you get at least twice a match.

Lucas has a shit neutral and gets chaingrabbed and gimped super easy, his recovery is getting exploited more and more every day. Tink i'm ambivalent about but he does get chaingrabbed by most the cast and Lunchables did stop using him for a reason as he struggles against the top 8 really hard. Sheik has an exploitable as fuck recovery in a game where the rest of the cast has ridiculous recoveries and she has at least 4 top 8 characters who fuck her up in neutral game, successful solo sheik mains don't exist for a reason. Yoshi has some hella great matchups and some really bad ones, but overall he has enough flexibility that he's often pretty relevant on most PR's (i.e. tombo combo and iheartlovetap). snake has guaranteed kills off of grab at above 50 percent on most characters, and has INFINITE recovery, as he's impossible to gim you have to put him in the blast zone. Game and Watch destroys 100 percent of floaties and all of his worst match ups are low tiers, braindead combos into death at above 50, a ridiculous recovery, and combos from grab that have a 1/5 chance to kill at 30 percent.

Brawl was the first big game release that I ever got when it actually came out. As a huge Melee and Gamecubefag in general, I actually really like Brawl a ton. The events (my favorite part of Melee) returned with a fuckload of decent ones including coop. Subspace Emissary I really enjoyed, I was still a babbie so Melee and Brawl introduced me to a fuckload of franchises I hadn't known about before. I honestly don't know why Brawl gets shit on the way it does, I think it was and still is a great fucking game, the best roster that's been in a Smash game if you don't count DLC characters for 4.

Two other anons and I were playing online matches and someone picked either one of those stages, I forgot which. Either way, we all walked off the sides of the stage to get it over with.

just don't use the wiimote retard.

>single biggest downgrade from sequel to sequel in video game history
that'd be Streets of Rage 3

I kinda like it being not as fast as Melee, since l-cancelling is a fucking pain in the long run. But they made it a bit too slow, while also making everything floaty as fuck.
It does make for a good base game for mods though. Project M and Brawl Minus are both great in their own right.

While I agree, everyone being able to run in SoR3 is a decent upgrade. Everything else is garbage, though.

>64
Bing bing wahoo *grabs you*
>Melee
N/A
>Brawl
Pit when playing seriously, otherwise Ganondorf

redpill me on Streets of rage 3, as I was a golden axe fag, also is it definitely worse than new battlefront, soul calibur, NG3, or Sims 4, where they made swimming pools dlc?

after like 3 hours of practice I don't even think about l canceling anymore

the real shit are the 1frame movement options

it was pointless, especially considering they just made all the enemies EVEN FASTER anyway.

>Streets of Rage 3
horrible AI and horrible boss design, among numerous other issues. imagine you made the best videogame ever and then in the sequel you just decided to throw everything good you did down the shitter.

>worse than new battlefront
doesn't exist
>soul calibur
V wasn't terrible
>NG3
never played
>Sims 4
>

The grab meta is the most fun any of these games have ever been.

>64
Link
>Melee
never played
>Brawl
ZSS, Link
>4
Link, Samus, Ike

even as a casual player, I feel this way. Even though I'm not into the whole tourney stuff or anything, I still think Melee was more fun to play. Melee is also far more pleasant to look at, Brawl looked so fucking ugly.

The best smsh bros game by far in every aspect except gameplay.
>Best game modes
>Best characters and movesets
>Best new additions
>Best graphics

>There’s no Dr. Mario in the list
You deserve a huge dose this time, friend.

dr isnt in brawl

>best graphics

how in the world could you prefer brawl visuals to smash 4

yeah I fucked up

I always thought Ganon was top tier on pm

Good riddance.

>Soul Calibur
I meant Lost Swords, rather than V. Although I suppose it gets a bit of a pass for being f2p

hes the easiest character in the game to win with if both of you are shit. but no he has too many flaws

Smash 4 cartoon graphics look good for a few days, but get anoying real quick i cant watch competitive smash 4 because of those graphics.
Brawl graphics arr obviously outdated but i still think they look good.
The realistic graphics really fit the series, hopefully they use them on the switch

I remember pop in Brawl, go all 1v1 final destination with my brother and getting bored as shit waiting for both our characters falling down. It was the worst.

average casual Brawlfag level of articulation

coming up on 10 years with no smash on the switch

where the fuck is the Smash 4 Switch port

>tfw played ZSS on Wii Remote
>always top 2 at uni tourneys
good times

I guess that's a fair take, but I have never had a problem looking at the bright visuals, then again I don't play smash 4 so maybe my mind would change. first impressions is smash 4 looks way better though.

>where the fuck is the Smash 4 Switch port
Did nintendofags on Sup Forums realy reach the stage of idiocy where people are unironically begging for ports over new games?
If you want to play Smash4 then just get it on WiiU. I really really hope they are going to make a new one, and I'd be really disappointed if they just ended up porting an already existing Smash to the switch.

Dragon Age 2

Brawl is far from the best game in the series, but I am definitely nostalgic for it. It was the first Smash game I owned for a time and I had a lot of fun with it (and still do).

>Kirby
>Game and Watch, Kirby, Fox
>Game and Watch, Wario, ROB
>Game and Watch, ROB, Duck Hunt, Pac-Man, Lucas, Dedede

I lost my fucking picture for this, but you know who I am.
the last three digits of your post are my birthday isn't that weird
