Why did CRPGs die while JRPGs are more popular than ever?
Why did CRPGs die while JRPGs are more popular than ever?
crpgs are boring as fuck
Oldschool CRPGs aren't particularly stimulating. Most of the stuff that matters in the games are text-based.
JRPGs transitioned into more action-y and/or story-heavy experiences at the right time to become more engaging on a sensory level.
Plus, CRPG purists who sit and bitch on NMA and other forums don't want the genre to modernize even a little bit, so they become more and more niche as their original audience shrinks due to age or suicide.
>Why did CRPGs die
They didn't, they're better than ever.
>JRPGs are more popular than ever
Maybe among the casual neo Sup Forums crowd.
Pillars of Eternity 2 is coming out in half a year and it looks great
They didn't die, they were just never that popular to begin with
>Why did CRPGs die while JRPGs are more popular than ever?
CRPGs evolved into action-RPGs with 3D graphics and those became more popular in the early 20th century than traditional CRPGs.
JRPGs aren't split in the same way between action-JRPGs and "traditional JRPGs", it's all the same thing.
>crpgs are dead
Even the good crpgs are based on the dnd ruleset. They're all boring and the same, while jrpgs are boring but at least fairly varied.
such triggering replies. if only somebody was here to engage in a long-winded argument over them that repeatedly bumps my shitty thread
wrpgs are crippled by a retarded neckbeard fanbase who thinks the only quality that matters is how hard a game is trying to be single player dungeons and dragons.
>baldurs gate 2
>planescape torment
>dragon age origins
>PoE 1 adn 2
>divinity original sin 1 and 2
>dead
As someone who actively enjoys playing CRPG's how is: A triggering reply? That's pretty accurate. CRPG's have never been mainstream / popular.
>Why did CRPGs die while JRPGs are more popular than ever?
You mean why did j"""RPGs""" die and allow WRPGs to completely dominate the genre?
JRPGs casualised for a wider audience, CRPGs didn't. They are still the niche market they always were.
Feels good to not have to do any gatekeeping because the worst of the faggots steer clear on their own.
>CRPG's
There is no such genre as "CRPG", dumbfuck. The "C" does not stand for "Classis", it stands for "Computer" and is completely redundant when discussing games on a VIDEOGAME board. RPGs have ALWAYS been "mainstream" and are one of the most popular vidya genres to ever exist, you fucking mongoloid. Skyrim sold over 12 million copies and it's more of a RPG than most of the j"""RPGs""" in existence combined, because, despite the memes regurgitated by retarded mongoloids, player character building choices actually DO matter in Skyrim and provide alternative quest solutions and rewards.
Jrpgs deserves it.
>JRPG's
There is no such genre as "JRPG", dumbfuck. The "J" does not stand for "Just", it stands for "Japanese" and is completely redundant when discussing games on a japanese VIDEOGAME board. RPGs have ALWAYS been "mainstream" and are one of the most popular vidya genres to ever exist, you fucking mongoloid. Dark Souls sold over 12 million copies and it's more of a RPG than most of the c"""RPGs""" in existence combined, because, despite the memes regurgitated by retarded mongoloids, player character building choices actually DO matter in Dark Souls and provide alternative quest solutions and rewards.
wow what a shitty list
over time CRPG has come to be shorthand for isometric top-down turn-based wrpgs like Fallout 1&2
Btfo
>over time CRPG has come to be shorthand for isometric top-down turn-based wrpgs like Fallout 1&2
No, they haven't. You don't get to pull genres out of your shithole, mongoloid. In fact, you don't get to define anything at all.
Pure anal devastation, nice.
wtf I hate eye of beholder now
Why do you want to summon the autist so badly
Wait, that's it?
You call this domination?
HAHAHA
Action rpg killed the crpg, most players can't go back to having 100 hours of reading dialog with boring combat and uninspired graphics.
I would rather play New Vegas, fable, witcher, or dragons dogma over pillars of eternity any day.
three words
>big
>anime
>tiddies
That's because pillars of eternity is trash
So are all the new one, divinity is alright but it doesn't follow the same rules of combat
There was a CRPG Renaissance wasn't there? Pillars of Eternity, Divinity, Shadowrun, Wasteland 2, Hard West, and some others. Did they all suck?
JRPGs are video games. CRPGs try to be actual RPGs and that's not possible for vidya.
Yeah the evolution of RPG mechanics is what killed the traditional cRPG way of doing role playing games. More people prefer the Skyrim type of RPGs than the Baldaurs gate.
JRPGS are just as dead as CRPGs, except that there's a market for low quality shit like neptunia or gust shit so those still exist, but they're not actually good.
most of them were shit because they didn't learn a single thing in the last 20 years.
>No, they haven't.
Yes they have.
Can I download underrail updates from somewhere if I pirate the gog version? I don't see latest release (with map) on gulf of corsairs
Both are doing very well, actually. There are options from Single A up to AAA of both genres to choose from, it's never been better.
dragon's dogma, fable, witcher, all have absolutely atrocious combat. I'd take fucking turn-based over that rubbish. ironically, the new fallout games and skyrim are the only modern non-turn-based wrpgs that are even remotely tolerable to play because they handle like an FPS instead of the tedious, lumbering, animation-locking bullshit that plagues every contemporary third person-focused wrpg and makes them a nightmare to play. it's like they looked at things like the side-scroller and FPS and said, hey, how to we achieve the OPPOSITE of this gameplay experience? and people lap it up. fucking world of warcraft is more enjoyable to play from a pure gameplay-perspective than all this garbage and I hate all of you for tolerating and thus ruining more games by saddling them with it. I'd rather play super meantboy on 10 fps than endure the horrid controls of any of these pieces of trash.
but who gives a fuck right? omg witrcher such good music such crazy setting let's throw awards at it because who gives a fuck about the gameplay in your games? cancer killing gaming
cRPGs are still around, though. If anything, they're the most relevant they've ever been since Baldur's Gate 2.
jRPGs play to their niche as well. All that's changed is that Persona has gotten impossibly big.
cRPGs dipped in popularity because the market changed to favour more "hands-on" gameplay, relying more on player input than on dice rolls/equations (with a few exceptions)
cRPGs still exist, they just will never reach the popularity they once had in the 80's and 90s, when videogames were more niche and had a bigger overlap with tabletop RPG enthusiasts
Dragons Dogma has some of the best combat of any rpg, go and commit sodoku.
Literally and unironically: consoles. The C in CRPG stands for "computer", and CRPGs started to go away when console adaptations of these games proved to be more financially viable. Conversely, JRPGs are almost exclusively a console exclusive genre, and JRPGs are original games based off CRPGs, but streamlined for a mainstream console market. Both have evolved to become action RPGs to some extent, with only a blurry line separating western from Japanese RPGs.
Put it this way; back in the 80s, a lot of CRPGs got ported to consoles. Nowadays, barely any JRPGs get ported to PC, the ones that do are ports of very old games like Valkyria Chronicles or Disgaea.
>falling for this bait
What did he mean by this
in other words they started making action games with rpg elements instead because those are more popular
that's really all there is to it
