Just finished Ys I. If it weren't for the bosses in the latter half of the game being annoying, I'd say it's almost a perfect, short arpg. As it stands, it's definitely a new favorite. After II, do I go in release order? Is there an entry to avoid? Also, Ys discussion thread.

What a coincidence, I beat Ys I on Nightmare today.
Release order is the way to go, so VI -> OiF -> Origin -> Seven -> MoC -> VIII
I only played VI, and dont think the story matters as a whole, each game is its own game
4 and 5 can be skipped.
Memories of Celceta is only ok, but still worth playing. Dawn of Ys isn't canon, but if you like I and II it's well worth playing.
I'm pretty sure you can just play them in any order you like. I believe most people play origin or felghana next either way. I even played Celceta after 2 because that was around the time Celceta released and I jumped on the chance for the collector's edition.
I was also wondering if Lacrimosa was good? Thinking of getting it sooner or later depending on if it was an improvement over the other games that play similar to it.
Ys VIII is by far the best party system Ys. Sadly NISA got their hands on it. Buy it used if you can.
>I was also wondering if Lacrimosa was good?
Did you play Seven? Did you like it?
Lacrimosa is decent if you can ignore the glaring localization issues in the script. Good story, decent characters. The Town Building and Survivor mechanics are fun as are the village attacks
I beat oath this christmas break, its amazing franchise
Oh congrats. I played through on Hard mode because that's what I usually do with games. I really wouldn't want to do Dark Fact on Nightmare. A huge chunk of play time went into just him.
I feel this image. What's wrong with 4 and 5?
I like this design but I liked her 90s shoulderpad design more.
V is a generic SNES ARPG and commits the sin of having the worst soundtrack in the series. It's going to be remade, Falcom already made some models for it with Ys VIII.
IV is a bit weird. Dawn of Ys is a fantastic Bump System game, but it's NOT canon. Memories of Celceta is arguably the weakest Party System game and was (even admittedly) rushed.
5 is just fairly bland and is the black sheep of the series. 4 (dawn of Ys) is said to have the best bump combat in the series, but hasn't had a proper remaster like 1 and 2 but a remake (Celceta) which is decent.
I might end up playing 4 because I love the Bump System so much. How bad are we talking for 5's OST?
It's still an Ys soundtrack, so it's good, but it's the weakest. There are a few good tracks.
Is Celceta playable on a PSTV?
Origin is the best Ys game prove me wrong
Yes it is. You need no special mods for it now it's on the regular whitelist.
Yes.
>Memories of Celceta is only ok,
Memories of Celceta is fantastic, fuck you.
Seven and VIII are better, deal.
I liked Celceta but everything before the underwater passage was fairly bad. Elvarion and onwards is a great game, but Angoroborass is probably one of the worst bosses in the franchise
Ys is lowkey one of the most comfy game series out there and one of my favourites too. I'm emulating the original Ys III right now but most people go for the remake instead.
>80s mullet Adol talking
I almost expect to see him in a Fire Emblem game.
>Ys is lowkey one of the most comfy game series out there
I definitely picked up on this during my playthrough of the first game. It was actually fun to interact with the townsfolk since they have relevant things to tell you and their dialogue changes as the plot unfolds. The combat is pretty simple, only really getting hectic during boss battles or tight spots in the dungeons. I can't wait to play the other games.
Have you played the Trails series, yet? It's another Falcom RPG that's really comfy. Turn-based though.
seven doesn't hold up.
Whenever I think I want to do another Nightmare run of Celceta, I remember this guy exists and it drains all my motivation.
I have not. Not the biggest fan of turn-based, but I'll give it a shot since it's developed by Falcom. Thanks for the recommendation!
Replayed the PC release, I'll have to disagree.

it has a godawful camera compared to the last two, but if you can look past that it's decent. though nayuta no kiseki has much better combat than any of the ys games. I wish they did more with it in VIII. it's like they go through all this effort modeling all these monsters, when there's very little incentive to fight them, and you usually just play as whoever you like and spam their most powerful attacks. kind of thoughtless. also, apparently there's status effects you can inflict like freezing that don't come into play nearly as much as they should. I kept forgetting they were even there.
I tried playing OiF a couple times but couldn't get into it because I felt like I needed to grind a bunch of random enemies before every boss and it really bored me. Then I switched to normal mode and it was more fun because I could just go from place to place and fight bosses as soon as I reached them. Unfortunately it seems like the boss patterns are simpler in normal mode so I'm not getting the full experience (I didn't mind spending several hours on each boss), but fuck grinding so I guess I'm a casual now.
Are all Ys games like this, i.e. "hard mode" means grinding? Does this apply to the Trails series as well?
I don't care.
hard mode always means grinding.
I love the bumper car combat, it sounds so silly when you say it out loud but it's actually really fun.
play on hard
i made the mistake of playing on normal and it put me to sleep
>start first playthrough in Nightmare mode
>get 5 levels from first enemy right off the bat
>realize they only call it nightmare mode because you're the nightmare of all the enemies
Actually you can play Ys VIII after V (so after IV). It slots in perfectly in its intended chronological order, doesn't spoil anything, and only drives your interest for VI through some NPC dialogue, again with no spoilers.
What you'll be missing on is the gameplay being different, but it's not anything game breaking.
I did a nightmare run of Ys 8 and got the platinum in a single run.
Game was worth it. Tons of unique enemies all the dungeons were well made. Loads and loads of areas to explore too.
I like the party system, I just wish they would have the next installment be the latest in the timeline instead of going back and have more of the characters become reoccurring.
I want to play it but I am still waiting for the translation fix before playing.
I hate how you can't save her and I hope it's not a trend for Jrpgs to have depressing endings. I wish they would have btfo that arrogant bitch Gaia.
I miss those huge busy UIs, separate from the game proper.
Same, on _PC_
lad the series is known to end sadly. After decades of adventure, Adol ventures off on his own to find the north pole and never returns, having completely ignored and never reciprocated the feelings of the various maidens he enchanted during his adventures. the games are just the recollections from his diary that was found.
They should just scrap the whole attack type system. Also, something in the vein of nier automata would be nice, how you controlled essentially 3 characters at once, with tons of customization. And dual/triple techs like CT would be welcome too. why more rpgs don't do this is strange.
I'm disappointed that Tokyo Xanadu decided to become a Cold Steel game with a shit load of affinity events and long long cutscenes and not more like YS 8.
Xanadu is just so slooooooooooooow. It takes forever to get going.
I understand romance won't be a thing, but storywise there is now a precedent where fate eventually gets Adol, with the three Gods now apparently in control of everything, and judging by Gaia, seem to be pretty big assholes too.
the original of the 3rd is shit, play oath of felghana instead
4 and 5 on snes are shit but still playable, ps2 version is garbage. the games are not cannon, you can skip them
Ys strategy is not Ys
play every of the others ones
6 is an overrated piece of shit tho
>do I go in release order?
Yeah
>Is there an entry to avoid?
Wanderers from Ys, IE Ys 3. Play Oath in Felghana instead, it's the remake and is the best game in the series.
Ys 5 is also kind of a black sheep.
>Also, Ys discussion thread
So, with Ys 8 they finally finished the 3rd "Party-focused, Flash Gurad" title.
I noticed Falcom changed the Ys formula every 3 games or so - and hope they'll do it again now.
I just want the series to return to solo Adol with elements of bullet hell... it was so fucking good in Felghana and Origin!
You should also check out the other Falcom ARPGs: Xanadu Next and Zwei. They're both on Steam, and another Zwei is going to be released soon.
Cripes, if by grinding you mean "beating every enemy in the stage once", then yes
you big pussies
Ys VIII is goty material
Why did Ys II turn into a bullethell?
I also finished the first game on nightmare. 3 hours of fucking batboss RNG. Love the series tho.
That fucker was easily the boss that took me the longest. Felt so fucking relieving to finally kill him.
Why not?
Dark Fact was hardest for me, even though I knew what I was meant to do to not fall through the floor, it felt like a pure fluke when I finally managed to beat him.
In fact it'd probably be more accurate to say when he allowed me to beat him, because there was very little activeness on my part.
Dark fact took me one hour or so. Wiped lots of times, but when you wipe against Dark fact, you die and get a fast reset. Vagullion took forever because the whole cycle part of the bats.
oh yeah, same here too.
I was kinda miffed back when I saw they were "modernizing" Ys designs. I knew what to expect. but at least the games are still fun.
Man, I hope they bring Nayuta to PC as well. Same engine as 7, isn't it?
>I am Dark Fact
>I will now tell you my weakness.
Oh thanks man. Let me get into this menu right quick.
Anyone ever try to beat the Time Trial in Ys 1? I can't defeat the third boss without dying. Seems almost impossible to do a perfect run. Super great game though. Beat it for the first time last week.
>still waiting for Ys VIII on pc
Fucking NISA faggots, they should be banned from working on falcom games and go bankrupt. Cunts.
Dark Fact is nicest boss in Ys.
>Bump system, bump system!
Ys 4 is best Ys.
oldschool RPG villains are great because they rock those humongous robes and shoulder pads like nobody's business
