Bros, I love the atmosphere and world of Gothic, but I suck at the combat.
Any tips for completing it the first time? I always get burned out during the mercenary initiation quests because i keep dying to everything..

Any tips on how to play gothic 2 are welcome. And yes, i have NotR.

how much STR do you usually have? Did you even train your weapon skills?

It's all about learning the enemy attack patterns and muscle memory. You are never supposed to just randomly attack the enemy at a random moment, you have to know the moment you have to strike and the moment you have to dodge/block if you want to get good at combat. Once you master that, you can beat every enemy in the game at lvl 0 and with a stick. It's not easy tho.

gothic 2 is my favorite game. is the night of the raven expansion good? I don't want to taint my fond memories of this game with dumb added content
do I need to level to a certain lvl to access it? don't wanna go into notr under- or overleveled

the "noob" way of playing Gothic is to use scrolls, lure enemies one by one, use a bow, make them follow you into other people, or cheese them until your stats and armor are good enough to make the combat easier

Make sure you get a new rank in 1h or 2h cause that drastically makes melee easier.

The pro way of playing Gothic is mastering the combat

You unlock the access to the addon island after completing a questline but If i remember correctly you can do it at any time.
I'd recommend you do the addon island questline during Act II

alright thanks. though saying act 2 is kinda vague since you can cheese so many enemies in act 1 and become a god lvl and skill wise

I installed some russian fix from steam community guides to fix gothic 1 but now if I press the play game button it starts a process for like 3-4 seconds and then stops.

Last time I played Gothic 2 was like 10 years ago when I was a teenage fuccboi with bullheaded tenacity and loads of free time. I just know I won't be able to get through it nowadays.

I had the exact same problem a few days ago, fortunately I was able to fix it.

First you have to uninstall the game, find all the registry keys related to it and delete them as well, then reinstall it and it should work fine

so gimmie a quick rundown, there's no general on /vg/ so what MODs should I get to play gothic 1 for the first time?

Okay I uninstalled it but I'm not that familiar with registry keys.
Will I catch them all by just searching for "gothic" with regedit?

When you get close to 30 or 60 points in whatever you're leveling just level to 29/59 then next use 5LP to save on some LP in the long run.

Depending on build usually dex is good to have if you want to use bows/magic since you can get a good dex weapon early whereas str builds tend to get pushed into using 1H/2H and crossbows.

Leveling weapon skill is more important than str/dex since it increases your "crit" rating so you do real damage more consistently.

As for combat dealing with humanoids I just do 2 quick attacks, block and mash backstep and repeat. Orcs you can fuck with their AI by swiveling the mouse to change their direction. If you don't want to cheese just bait out their dodge, strafe then attack.

Not sure what was going on, I always had no trouble playing older games, but it seems like they're all working like shit, or those two games are just buggy like that. After finding nothing about how to fix the awful audio stutter thing in KOTOR 2 I've pretty much given up

Game balance. Even a shitty Wolf can kill you in one hit, you don't get health after you level up, Skeletons are basically unkillable, Fire spells are fucking broken as shit and make lightning and ice attacks irrelevant, Ice wave is completely useless just like his single target variant, orcs have more range so you can't no longer fight them as easily on top of having shittons of health, there is a goblin that one shots you with his fireball spell on Greg's cave where you find the first of his treasures, potions add jackshit in terms of attributes and you need to learn to cook food, Zuris no longer sell spells that were really good for certain mass of bandits so you have to fight big groups of them mostly alone (which is close to imposible at first) since they're way too hard to pick one on one, content is hidden behind difficulty levels (so if you want to see everything you have to play on hard or impossible),,,,

But then it adds cool stuff like secondary guilds (assassins, hunters, merchants, Brotherhood) other main guilds (Necromancer, Water Mage) more new quests and characters...

It's one step forward, two steps back.

How bad is the combat actually? Is actually bad or is it like Gothic/Risen and Soulsborne kids need to gloat?

Gothic 2, Risen 1 and Elex are their best games. Gothic 3 is decent but it obviously suffers from releasing a year too soon, which is a shame.
