Why was game so popular?

What made it such a loved game? I never played it and probably never will, just not my kind of game.
But it seemed, at least to me, to sweep the world and make a ton of people fall in love with it.
So tell me Sup Forums, why the fuck was this so popular?
What made it good?
Is it even good?
And why did it make my friend all of a sudden get into fish girls?

Music is good tier, possibly great-tier. (Not God-tier, don't listen to them). The hit single was used before in Homestuck before being remixed and put in Undertale.

Speaking of Homestuck, that's also partially why. The Homestuck kickstarter was funded within 24 hours with over a million dollars indonations (including 2 people that donated $10,000 to have their fan trolls appear in the comic for one page). However, Homestuck became a clusterfuck immediately afterward, and a lot of people were craving a game to fill the niche left from homestuck going MIA. There's a reason a lot LOT of underfags were homestuck fans.

I got it as a gift upon release but still haven't played it.

I felt as though I really connected with Toriel (mostly)
but everyone else did feel like a genuine friend

Got the game after i saw my roommate beating the living shit out of a seemingly innocent yellow flower in the game. We were talking mid game and he was rambling on about how choices mattered and the way the game played out he started feeling for the characters and is regretting how he just murdered a plant.
I bought the game just so I can be a sadist to a flower but Goat Mom changed my heart immediately.

That's basically all there is to it. Gameplay is pretty mediocre, but passable enough to not make you want to quit.

Does that actually reduce the quality of the Switch or Switch games? No of course not. But Sup Forums will still act like it does. Because let's be honest. Most people here are just 15-17 year old kids trying to fit in and if a game is "cringy" or has anthing that can make it "cringe" like a shitty community for a singleplayer game that has 0 update and no impact on your player experience people will hate on it.

It's that simple. Undertale is a great little game and you should play it.

What if Deus Ex/Fallout New Vegas/Mass Effect 1 all had similar cancerous fanbases. Would you also hate on those games then as well? Because that's how I see it with Undertale. I know no one that actually finished the game and thought it was genuinely bad. At worst you think it's a fun game but overrated or something and even then I think they only say that due to the cancerous fanbase.

I think this gives a wrong idea about the game. The game is serious at moments and has a dark almost horror-game tone at times.

The humor is also pretty good and actually made me laugh from time to time which is pretty rare within games.

Saying that the game is "cute and innocent" makes it seem like it's some loli moeblob shit where nothing happens. This is NOT the case. It's an engaging storyline about having a positive look in a depressing situation.

Cheap and easy enough that literally anyone can beat it regardless of skill. Result is a million casuals played it and declared it indie game of the year, despite having not played any other indie games that year.

Except Stanley has loads of branches and funny jokes. Undertale has one branch right at the start, and cringeworthy jokes.

It was the perfect time for a product targeted at it's various demographics, boosted by the whole homestuck-tumblr-artsharing group already knowing and loving the creator
