I'm not sure if it's relevant but I did sort of enjoy the conceptions of Far Cry Primal. Though I'll admin I am not sure what factors are in play between "General Prehistory" settings and Conan's Hyborian age since a passing read of Howard's work seems to suggest humans were working iron in 105,000BC and I'm not sure how that shaped the rest of the pseudo history beyond "Well Atlantis".

I think I would just like more games to pick settings in corners that don't get explored very well and what I think amounts to Nomad vs Civilization is on that list.

Well that's not SO strange though. Middle Kingdom Egypt was known to trade with nearly everyone in the Mediterranean by that time, that just requires an unforseen further interaction to get a person from or to the Scandinavian Peninsula from mainland Europe.

But there's no fucking way Conan or anyone of the era could have sailed to America from Africa though. Even giving them the conceit that the shoreline was once much larger and the fortune to navigate towards ro Ascension Island they'd never be able to reach the western most part of America. The knowable way to navigate the seas just wasn't learned.

I do agree with you and to an extent the other guy that it's almost certain we had at least some level of civilization prior to when we commonly credit it. Not Atlantis level, not near medieval era as Hyboria is in Aquilonia, but at the very least civilization in the early bronze age sort likely pre-existed what we think. Those are the stories that REH had to shit out to make enough money to survive. There are some stories that are unabashed pulp nonsense, some which are in between that and a good proper yarn and then some which are fucking amazing and had he the time and money he could have turned into full-length masterpieces.

Hour of the Dragon and Beyond the Black River are the most notable of the that. The former is fit to be some ancient legend of the righteous king, the latter is not my favorite (For me the pict stuff is too Americana given its clear Injun parallels) but it's literally devoid of any sex and damsels and distress and purely about his philosophy on civilization and barbary. Even the stand-in for Howard, the Aquilonian colonist I forget the name of, ultimately does not survive because Howard knows as much as he'd like to not be he is still a creature of civilization. Tower of the Elephant is fantastic but short as hell. Queen of the Black Coast is and has a nice torrid romance element to it with Belit and Conan and how the one woman who Conan well and truly loved (not just lusted after like Valeria the blonde or the pretty waifu who saved him in Hour of the Dragon) is some confident crazy dark-haired MILF.

There's also Red Nails with whole decrepit decadent mesoamerican migrant city, The Black Stranger.

It'll be problematic for the modern day limp-dick arrogant faggots who think all of history must match their perfect quaint 2017 sensitivities but when his friend Lovecraft was writing "On the Creation of Niggers", it's clear Conan was more considerate, just in the standards of the time with the more patrimonial view of racialism. I won't sugarcoat it because it's clear REH was racial and saw the world in racial terms and viewed anglo-saxons or Northern Europeans as the superior race, but who didn't back then? And even there he would couch such supremacism with the view of civilization as abberational and ultimately destructive - Anglo-Saxon civilization weakened and degraded them, rather than was an asset. But he's a complex figure because he had a longstanding fascination with the Picts despite or even because of their otherness. While they are Injuns in Conan, the second leading figure (and in some ways the more compelling) in Kull of Atlantis is his once enemy turned best friend some Pictish Prince.

Likewise the protagonist in REH's El Borak Series is a half-Injun half-Texan gunslinger swashbuckling about in Afghanistan. I can highly recommend the books as they are pretty fun adventurous shit. Clearly going half-Red Indian is kind of bitch-nigger tier easy and a hallmark of literature but it still illustrates REH's love of the hero being an other, an outsider with some level of not being at home in any society or part of his blood. Nothing really profound theme wise like in some of the Conan books but it's good stuff. I haven't read Solomon Kane but apparently Solomon Kane's primary partner/ally is some African Shaman. So I see REH and his characters more representing a kind of paternalistic white noblesse oblige rather than a KKK "kill anyone who doesn't have blonde hair and blue eyes".

Hell it's either the Vanir or the Aesier who are the racial nemesis of the Cimmerians (and the other Norse clan). I think it's the red haired Aesir while Conan has traveled and fought beside the blonde Vanir.

Sort of a mix of Voodoo niggers and Injuns. They have a lot of Indian style to their dress (lack thereof), weapons, primitivism, totemism. This miniature and drawing is way too apeish even for the often comparison to being apes by REH, but the description is from that beyond the black river story that is his premiere Pictish one.

A priest of Mitra goes to Pictland to try and civilize them, unfortunately what he manages to establish of civilizational norms are technology and organizational matters suitable to a rising Pictish king-of-kings. So a strengthened, organized and united Pictish force conquers Hyborian kingdoms and meets and fights with an equivalent Hyrkanian or Turanian state. The ice age cometh, shit goes to shit, Vanir/Aesir travel southwards and as someone mentioned conquer Stygia and provide the racial nucleus of the future Pharaohs, and things get shitty and miserable until the ice age abates and civilization re-emerges.

I'd say he wasn't that racial. Rather, he acknowledged empires, species and civilizations rise and fall. The world of Conan is filled with stories about superior races getting btfo in many ways.
