Am I the only one who liked Ethan?
He's such a dork for an RE protagonist and so deadpanned its hilarious.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I felt the writers were intentionally making fun of video game logic with how unphased Ethan seems to be by everything.

We normally don't question when you get your throat ripped out and the player character is all quiet and chill about it, and then heals himself with a herb because "that's just how games work". But in RE7 they literally write this stupid video game shit into the story, Ethan gets his hand sawn off and is mostly just "well alright then"; and then you got the healing items which are so powerful they quite literally can reattach limbs.

The game generally seemed self-aware about how stupid game design is.

I liked Clancy more.

He was a plank that barely reacted to anything around him, he's such a non character so the player could self insert easily. t

Yeah, the way Ethan shrugged off losing limbs and axing his wife for the first time felt kind of glossed over.

But I guess making the whole game genuinely emotionally and physically horrific at all times wouldn't have fit the over-the-top tone they were going for at times. Which I suppose is better than something like Outlast 2, which just strives to make you lose your lunch from the get-go.

He can easily solve elementary school level puzzles and use chemistry to produce first aid medicine. So no. Even though he can shrug off getting his limbs amputated, he is not a roided up clueless meathead.

And Yeah I know Ethan is a one note character that wont show up again but his autism was appealing to me.At least he got a good ending.

Daily reminder that Leon in the original Japanese was always a serious business type character and that it was just the localizers for RE4 that made the decision to turn him into a wisecracker.

This is just the explanation for why Leon's wisecracking seems all over the place. 6 kept him closer to his Japanese counterpart (as did Degeneration) which is why he seems to be so much more serious now.

It was designed this way to be easier for you to roleplay, not for it to be satirical from a meta sense. The more a writer prescribes to the main character the less roleplayability there is for the player.

Clancy suffered more then any other RE character ever.

He was a shit lead, other than somehow being even more bland than an Elder Scrolls protag, he has no background, and no explanation given for how "well" he handled all the shitty weapons he found, and no reason other than pure fucking luck that he survived all the shit he went through, the "Mad House" had several escapees too, but as Zoe explains non made it to the trailer.

As much as I hate the stupid fucking bitch that is Mia, the game should have focused more on her akin to the older games as she is actually involved in all the crap, and anyway the second half of the game, past the house, feels rushed af.

So 5/10 it's no RE4.

Sometimes normal people can survive bad shit.
A bunch of characters from Outbreak are just normal everyday dudes and they survive shit even worse then what Ethan has to go through.

I meet these requirements, but I have no drive to live a successful life. Instead I want to stay in my apartment all day and play video games until one day I simply stop existing. The only reason I have girls interested in me despite almost never leaving the house is my face. I have a horrible personality (made obvious by my depression and lack of motivation to do anything) and I avoid human interaction. My only friends are people who have known me almost all my life, although my social circle is huge.

It was deliberately shown to indicate to the player that Ethan is also infected but in early stage compared to rest of the family.

Can someone attempt to explain to me how anyone could possibly miss that point? How does one play a game in a series that's all about mutating pathogens, see a bunch of characters regenerate back to life from fatal wounds, others shrugging off dismemberment done on a whim, and not arrive at the conclusion that infection = regeneration, regeneration = infection?
This is not meant as an insult against anyone. I'm genuinely curious as to how someone came to a different conclusion.

This and also people speedrun most of the games. My 1st RE7 playthrough took me almost almost 20h. And I enjoyed every second of it.
