Wrong game, OP.

nostalgiacuck

fpbp

Can't we just have a Tropical Freeze thread instead?

THE game that proved to any retard that had a doubt in their mind that the gaming media are in fact complete fucking hacks.

Never forget.

This is the correct answer

Are we just talking 2D platformers here? I mean I'd argue that those new Rayman games are pretty excellent as well.

...

>you will never be so shit at video games that a Nintendo intern starts memeing on you

Battle Royale

3D Platformer: Mario Odyssey
2D Platformer:Tropical Freeze
FPS: Timesplitters 2
TPS: Resident Evil 4
Action-Adventure: Ocarina of Time
Action: Devil May Cry 3
Racing Sim: Gran Turismo 4
Non-traditional Racer: Crash Team Racing
JRPG: Chrono Trigger
WRPG: Deus Ex
Fighting: Street Fighter 3rd Strike

nice

>3D Platformer: Mario Odyssey
i agree but i doubt anyone else will

These or pic related.

I'd argue for Mario Galaxy or Jak and Daxter over Odyssey but still a respectable pick.
Would also argue for Halo 3 over Timesplitters 2 but they're both great.

>3D Platformer: Mario Odyssey
user you’re gonna rustle a lot of feathers around here. I agree with that but anything except Sunshine, 3D world, land or Galaxy 1 is also an acceptable choice.

SMB3 is way better than SMW.

I'd personally say it's a bit soon to give Odyssey the title, but this sounds about right.

>World
Close but no cigar

no

It absolutely is not. Way too many autoscrollers.

When will they learn?

>Gran Turismo
>sim racing
If you think that garbage is sim racing then it's no wonder the rest of your list is complete shit.

SMW has more style

I think it says a lot about the state of 2018 when games like OP, years old ports and Dark Souls are all we have to be excited about.
Not just a Switch problem but like what the fuck is there?

Last year I could think of 10+ games. I was already playing Yakuza Zero this time a year ago. This January sucked.

>style fag
Could you not? That’s still wrong anyways.

Replace Deus Ex with Planescape: Torment.
Replace Chrono Trigger with SMT III: Nocturne.
I think it might be a bit soon to say Odyssey is the GOAT 3D platformer but I won't deny that it was a fucking blast, enough for me to continue my trend of 100%ing every 3D Mario except Sunshine.

This didn't address my concern with SMB3.

Is that playable on cemu?

>3D Platformer: Mario Odyssey
Christ I can't wait for the honeymoon phase to be over for this game.

>Action-Adventure: Ocarina of Time
>not Okami
nintenbro detected

>40 hour tutorial
>Best anything

tried tropical freeze just a few days ago. didn't obviously play through all of it. the first 2 worlds i think. it was just dkc returns but with better controls and more gimmicks. i don't get the praise for it. maybe it's nostalgia and stupidity combined together, but i'd rather just play the original dkc games instead.

>tight as hell controls
>excellent level design
>fantastic atmosphere
>god tier music
I don't know why wouldn't you love it.

Dong freeze is right behind DKC 2

>god tier music
Fucking this, best thing Wise has ever done.
youtube.com/watch?v=WA2WjP6sgrc
youtube.com/watch?v=Boqy0Q-4c_M
youtube.com/watch?v=95HuSMQSUVo

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

It holds up. I play it every once in a while.

>JRPG: Chrono Trigger
lol

I see your fantastic songs and I raise you this one:
youtube.com/watch?v=di6VFegOMfk

>2D platformer
DKCTF or Yoshi's Island
>3D
SM64
>FPS
DOOM 93
>Action
DMC3 or God Hand
>JRPG
Dragon Quest VIII
>WRPG
Fallout New Vegas

It's right on the money

nope

Oh, absolutely, don't get me wrong, it still is a fantastic game. I'm just saying TF is even better.

youtube.com/watch?v=iXoELYrsQdU (best arrangement)
youtube.com/watch?v=U1vsBsCoK_I
youtube.com/watch?v=ss421nbCAJE

Why does no one post the real best song
youtu.be/_V9ZBEo4wKg

Best 2d platformer, coming through.

If they're both amazing how can you put down DKC2 love as just nostalgia? Come on man.

Forgot to mention that SMB3 had tiny levels and no save.

...

World's levels are also tiny.

honestly these two are about tied though I've come to prefer Tropical Freeze
All fantastic choices, but you can't forget the one true god youtube.com/watch?v=W-DfeRp8t4Q

GOAT 2D platforming level, nothing even comes close to this.

i don't know why either. only stupid complains. but like i said it's mostly because of nostalgia. just seems so bland and generic somehow. if you think it's great then that's fine. not going to argue.

How much better is tropical freeze over returns?
I played returns but didn't enjoy that much, but I'm considering getting the switch version

Tropical Freeze fags are so sad.
YWW is far superior. Better art style, actually challenging, no shitty gimmick controls (blow into the controller to look like a fag), better post game content, better amiibo support.

Go home.

Not even close to as small though.
>Pic Related

If you didn't like returns you're probably not going to like tropical freeze.

good post

Notice how SMB3 has much more focused platforming whereas SMW is miles of horizontal stretches.

>Tropical Freeze fags are so sad.
I seriously don't understand why they are trying to force it so hard.
Tropical Kong Shlong is very good, yeah, but it's not even in the top 10 best jum&run games of all time.

Fucking portals how do they work?

because there's a giant banzai bill shooting towards you

posting the real songs

youtube.com/watch?v=_V9ZBEo4wKg
youtube.com/watch?v=zWckr41oNCc
youtube.com/watch?v=S-y0DjnlDYU

at least two of them are filler

Unlike the filler that is artificially stretching out a level by making it an autoscroller.
SMW has what... 5?
How many does SM3 have? 12?

>No Wing Ding
Posts discarded.
youtube.com/watch?v=kEId-ERa0M0

>seems so bland and generic somehow
How exactly is it bland and generic? Just because it's 2.5D doesn't mean it's bland.
I mean, look at this shit: youtube.com/watch?v=D8cNLoNMAIw

leave the dude alone, everyone has personal tastes and he said he didn't want to argue. Don't be obnoxious about it.

what's wrong with asking people to explain their reasoning?

>make a bold-faced statement such as "this game looks generic and bland"
>ask for his reasoning behind it and give an example showing what I believe proves him wrong
>l-leave him alone he doesn't wanna explain himself so he doesn't have to!
I weep for this generation

That screenshot looks bland as fuck.
It's too polished and generic. Seems like any 2.5d game a 4th year game design student would produce.

>too polished
/r/ing the "improvement isn't always a good thing" screencap

Listen, I'd rather have people just say "it didn't do anything for me" than "I fucking hate it because the fanbase screeches when you don't love it." I wish more people had good attitudes here. Not everybody will like every game. I love Tropical Freeze and BOTW, but a lot of people don't, and I can live with that. I don't need to hound them until they agree with me.
Plus, bland and generic are two of the most subjective criticisms you can give something.

I fucking love TF but I do have to agree that the art direction is not one of the game's strong points, weird since the MP trilogy had god tier art direction.

>mediocre games
>best of the genre
I will never understand DKCfags. Play more video games.

This is a perfect example of the generic polished thing the new DK games have going for them.
Look at the sections of the slide.
Ctrl-c + ctrl-v
There is no difference at all in the sections. Nothing worn or weathered at all. It's brand new. Pristine. Assembly line.

Same thing with the trees in the background and the cabin. There is no life to the world. It's a series of 3d images.

it's hard to explain. maybe it's the nintendo 3d graphics and overall theme. dkc returns what why there where crash bandicoot masks? who knows.

>the generic polished thing the new DK games have going for them
Are you implying that the old DKC games didn't also re-use assets and background elements? Because they repeated backgrounds like a damn Flinstones episode. Rare was just good at using foreground elements to disguise that.
Also the screenshot he posted is from a minecart level which are some of the fastest-paced levels in the game. A single tiled texture on a slide that's only going to be on-screen for one second isn't exactly damning, you know.

>it's hard to explain
Maybe it's hard to explain because you have an irrational distaste for the game's art direction just because it's different and can't articulate why?

Funky Waters is better than Aquatic Ambiance. Fucking fight me.

possibly. i didn't mean to cause such a dispute about it. people like some sort of art direction and some don't. it's not really easy to explain why you like or dislike something when it comes to that stuff.

Of course DKC 1,2,3 reused assets. BUT the difference is DKC 1, 2 and 3 the places actually felt lived in.

But it wasn't just the mine cart level that felt generic. It was almost every level. It didn't feel like a jungle or mountain. It felt like a 3d rendition of one.

Pic related. Just look at the background or rocks in the foreground. They are bland as fuck.

It looks like pretty much every other 2.5D platformer. 3D graphics were a mistake.

>the places actually felt lived in
How exactly? In DKC1 the levels were just various setpieces taking from different level archetypes (jungle, forest, etc.)
DKC2 I can kinda see what you mean what with the hive levels showing where Zingers come from and Kremland being an amusement park for Kremlings, but even then it's mostly just setpieces.
And on the other hand you have, say, world 5 of Tropical Freeze showing you the entire process in which fruity snacks are made. The first level shows them being plucked from trees, the next 2-3 show them being processed in various ways, the last one shows the results (the big jellies that you bounce on), and it all leads up to your confrontation with the boss who's enjoying a snack (that you just saw getting processed) before you interrupt him and piss him off.
And in world 3 you have the twister level where fiery hedgehog enemies are being blown around as stage hazards, and during the next level you're traversing a massive plains fire that was started as a result of them being blown around. There's a good amount of narrative continuity present throughout the level progression during certain parts of the game.
I don't know what you're pulling out of your ass to convince yourself that the Rare games are more "lived in" than the game that literally shows you the process in which the invading enemies harvest, process, and consume the fruits of the jungle.

I don't understand. People love Tropical Freeze cause every level has a gimmick but DKC3 is hated because of the exactly same reason. What the shit?

not to mention the fishing operation in world 3, the bird houses for the hootz, the little basecamps with supplies in pots and crates

DKC3 has a few stages where the gimmick overrides the main gameplay and drags the games pacing down (killing enemies to open doors, how thrilling) and some gimmicks like the fish food one are just dumb.

The gimmicks in TF aren't shit.

Kiddie Kong, although I liked 3, and it was the only one of the OT I 100% completed, also from what I remember TF typically had 2-3 gimmicks levels per world, could be misremembering though.

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of what 'lived in' means.

I just don't like it because the music is mostly shit, the baby kong is awful to play as, and I hate all the new animals (especially that fucking elephant).

This.

DKC games were never good.

DKC fans have shit taste, who knew? If they had taste, they wouldn't be DKC fans.

>DKC game
>Entire OST isn't composed by David Wise
What the fuck were they thinking?

So it's a worse game because the areas it takes place in aren't shitholes like Crocodile Isle?
Great. That's your opinion, not mine.

>JRPG: Chrono Trigger

>the music is mostly shit
Eveline Fischer's no David Wise but she did some great work for the game.
youtube.com/watch?v=57FQ_L0lH5c
She also worked on DKC1, you know.
Out of 5 DKC games (6 if you count DK64) Wise has only done the entire soundtracks for two titles.

3D Platformer: Mario 64
2D Platformer: Sonic 3 & Knuckles
FPS: Doom 64
TPS: Max Payne 2
Action-Adventure: Ocarina of Time
Action: Ninja Gaiden Black
Racing Sim: Gran Turismo 2
Non-traditional Racer: Rush 2049
JRPG: Final Fantasy VIII
WRPG: Morrowind
Fighting: Virtua Fighter 4 Evo
