6 was really good for that. In-mission dialogue made it clear that you were one hotshot pilot among many, you just happened to be the Ace of Aces by virtue of being the player character.
Yeah 6's strength was really making you feel like part of a massive force. I loved that shit with the group attacks and the multiple operations and shit.

Start from Ace Combat 04 and climb up from there, and after you're done with that go back, play the translated japanese version of Electrosphere [the US version butchers it, it's not a translation issue, it changes the story completely for the worse], and maybe 1 and 2
PS2 trilogy is always the easiest way. 5 and 0 emulate well, 4 has a few hiccups but is fine. Or you can just get them physically, they should be cheap. If you have a 360, 6 is also good. Ignore Assault Horizon.
Even though most of the games are in a shared world with a shared history, they're designed in a way that they're still standalone stories, so don't worry about order.

I thought Four Horsemen was a fun mission, but White Noise was legit awful for the first time. Thankfully all of the missions after White Noise are great.

5 and 0 emulate well with little bugs as long as you set up the right settings and run from a decent gpu. 4 is playable but has more graphical bugs and slowdowns.
