Never played this

Never played this.

Played almost every other "game that everyone says to play", but never this (or the sequel).

Sell me on Half-Life. I like 90s FPSes, but I always hear that this was more "cinematic"? Which is kind of why I never bothered, because that sounds boring. I'd rather just shoot shit.

Just play the fucking game.

it's honestly just ok.

I mean I found it fun because it ran on a netbook/shitbox-PC back around 2008..

but it's literally just OK.

Just fucking play it instead of looking for validation from random strangers on a Thai underwater basket weaving forum, you cock slurper.

>Sell me on Half-Life.
Okay simple. You can use a crowbar to hit shit with.

much more puzzle-based than cinematic. I think it has great atmosphere and replayability.

I had more fun in sven co-op, source games feel better in multiplayer to me.

>I like 90s FPSes

Well apparently you don't if you haven't played Half-Life, you stupid attention whoring faggot.

It takes time and/or money to track that shit down. Maybe I'll do that later. Right now I'm just curious about the game.

It's like an immersive Quake
The game doesn't prohibit you from murdering innocent people
You get a gun that shoots hornets and can throw tiny flesh-eating aliens that also explode

I didn't enjoy it.

What time or money? Holy shit I want to cave your skull in.

you are literally a faggot

You are literally braindead.

I honestly enjoyed this more than hl2, having played them both recently.

Is there any way to get it to run in 16:9 proportions? Because it's pretty old, so I'd assume it's only for 4:3 monitors. I can deal with that, but ideally I'd rather not have to run it in a window if I don't want it stretched out.

I wouldn't bother, the singleplayer is only a small part of what made Half-Life great, you had to be there at the time when a new mod would come out and a big part of the community would join in to try it out. be it the popular ones TFC, Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat or the smaller weird ones, like Science and Industry, Poke646, FireArms, Sven Co-Op and even the dumb Valve made ones, like Quake DM on HL engine and Ricochet.

It runs perfectly on modern hardware

What're the differences between the 2?

>Maybe I'll do that later. Right now I'm just curious about the game.
Majority of the game you use a crowbar.

You should give it a spin, but be noted that it probably won’t be all that impressive as you would think from its status. Not saying that it’s bad or even that badly aged, but most of its fame comes from the fact that it was one of the first FPS games that tried to put you in immersive, somewhat realistic big environment that doesn’t just feel like a set of levels without any grander context behind them. Of course, it became such an important step that practically every single FPS game made after it has followed in its footsteps, so playing it the first time in 2018 probably leaves one wondering what was so revolutionary about it, unless you know the historical context.

Still, it’s a fun game with some seriously good level design (except for everyone-knows-what), so it’s very much worth trying even today.

Will I need to get any patches or anything to update it for 16:9 monitors? Or edit any configurations or whatever?

>but I always hear that this was more "cinematic"?
There's a really long train section at the start to show off the grafix and after that a section where you walk through the facility with no combat, after that the game actually starts and there's very little "cinematic" stuff.

I thought the guns felt better in 1, and that the puzzle/driving sections in 2 were annoying

It cost a few quid on steam.

Fucking generation Z. Go post some selfies on Snapchat and cry on twitter

It's a fucking world famous game on the most popular PC distribution program and constantly goes on sale for practically nothing. You must be pretending to be retarded.

>using Steam
>using anything with DRM

Wait for a Steam Sale. The game is like a dollar and is worth it for that amount.

HL1 is a fun game. Opfor is a good expansion, blue shift is alright. I'm waiting for xen for BM to release, kinda wanna replay hl.

Go buy the fucking cd rom from eBay then autist boy

>He uses windows

then play the won version and stop being a bitch.

>using anything connected to the internet ever

HL1 was bretty good. The mods at the time made it into something amazing.
>Counterstrike
>Day of Defeat
>Team Fortress Classic
>Natural Selection
>Firearms
>etc

>Counterstrike
ruined the fps genre

Yes, it has a lot of setpieces and "atmospheric" sections. The level design is very linear, mostly it's a corridor with a side path or two. It's also filled with cheap traps and jumpscares. Count the amount of times a headcrab jumps out at you when you get in or out of a vent. It has quite a lot of platforming and puzzle solving by FPS standards. The movement is very slippery and awkward, you can get stuck in enemy corpses. About half of the guns feel like shit to use. You can shoot a human enemy point blank with a shotgun and see them shrug it off like it's nothing. The SMG is inaccurate garbage to the point where you're better off just using the pistol. Don't go into it expecting the typical 90's shooter. It's very much a precursor to modern FPS with some leftover aspects of older shooters like bunnyhopping. To appreciate it you have to get into the world and atmosphere.

>can't kill grunts in one shot with the shotgun
Learn how to play the game.

>REEEEE HOW DARE THEY MOVE AWAY FROM GENERIC ARENA SHOOTER DESIGN

Elaborate. Unless you mean on normal

all you have to do is altfire in the head, revolver and crossbow also 1shot. don't now about the gauss gun but it probably does too, also smg altfire and explosives in general.

Yeah a headshot will do the trick but a point blank body shot not immediately killing some lowly grunt is absurd

Im not a marketeer and I couldnt give two fucks If you play it or not. In fact, seeing as you're the kind of person who uses buzzwords without any grasp of their meaning, I'd rather you not play it. Now fuck off.

Who pissed in your casserole?

Why should I have to sell the game to you? It's a great game, I don't give a shit if you play it or not. You should play it though.
