WHY

Why did the the Combine do this to people?

Why not just kill them?

someones gotta maintain the citadel

They do the grunt work like operating machines and shit.

That's a regular soyboy user...

because hl2 needed a spooky scary skeleton enemy but valve cut it in the end

which makes sense considering that hl2 is shit compared to hl1

Just to give a warning to anyone who dares to go against them. Like how finnish soldiers propped dead, frozen, soviet soldiers to spoop the enemies from coming

who did it before?

It's spookier for the atmosphere to have humans be a recycled host rather than just have them doomed to deadly death

I believe the idea was these dudes had Psionic powers (think jedis, but not mainstream.) as an experiment, and they had their limbs removed to FORCE them to exercise those abilities. Oh, and they did maintenance on the citadel because you kinda don't want the other regular humans to go roudy if they see this shit.

Not even the first species with this ability. The nihilanth and those pesky flying assholes in 1 were more blatant.

Combine are colonial enemies that enslave its inhabitants, so it's easy to conclude that each planet is enslaved and controlled by the planets respective species of alien.

Hell, you don't even have to guess that. We see this happen in the first game.

If their job is to type on computers all day, why'd they remove the hands lol

Yeah, it's definitely pretty fucked up

Human hands actually aren't that very well designed for pushing keyboard keys repeatedly for a long amount of time. But other input methods we came up with aren't as versatile and people refuse change regardless.

Hands are pretty good for typing, I think.

...

They were supposed to be augmented worker drones like the augmented soldiers, they took care of shit like maintenance and construction. They don't show up as much in the final game after so much got cut but it's still kind of there when you see them working on gunships.

They aren't when your bosses are a bunch of giant psychic slug monsters that built technology around that very fact.

Yeah, those guys are fucking dicks.

>we will never get the real, more horror styled hl2

Advisors are still pretty low on the Combine scale.

A hands neutral pose on-keyboard and off one don't match. This puts active strains on your extensors and passive strain on your flexors and your wrist over time. This is why those who use keyboards a lot, yah know, progamurs, have to perform finger exercises, and often have carpal tunnel syndrome just as bad as artists do.

How are you supposed to scratch yourself? Fucking bastards

how does this thing even walk?

Were the transhuman Overwatch used as infantry for the Combine in other dimensions?

Nope. Soldiers are just there to quell human related incidents on Earth, same with most of the synths deployed on Earth.

The announcer voice talks about being transferred off-world if you fuck up.

Still your boss and still mainly give a good example of what Combine tech is built around i.e. cut all the fat bullshit of limbs, removing waste from the body, health regulation and just make everything as stupidly simple and efficient.

Still not sure why remove the legs and replace them with literal sticks though. Maybe they really are just pricks.

...

Less living tissue that requires nutrition

This fucking picture reminds of that fucking mexican cartel video.

>Still not sure why remove the legs and replace them with literal sticks though.
It's just a leftover from the original design where they ran super fast.

...

...

Who's at the top then?

>mfw All the memes were right this whole time and he really was just a misunderstood good guy
>mfw now even if they were to somehow release Half-Life 3 they aren't ever going to use Marc original script and change it completely and leave Breen as generic bad guy
Marc was too good for this world.

...

Unknown. Even before Epistle 3 came out, it wouldn't make much sense for the leaders of a galactic traveling force to stay on a backwater planet, nor would it make sense for the force that destroyed the military of the world in 7 hours to be subdued by a resistance force in a time frame not that much longer than the original invasion. I pictured the leaders, the original combine, to be nothing but an amalgamation of machines and bio material from species that have been absorbed into their collective, dispensing advisors to worlds to help the local species "get settled" into their role in the empire.

for how malnourished and scrawny that thing is, it is doing a pretty good job of balancing on those little peg legs

That's true, they wear out after a long amount of use, but oh well, that's true for most parts of the body. It's not perfect, but I'm glad I have hands to type with. I think our fingers allow us to be quicker at typing than if we just had a little stump.

I say just keep their hands until they've been ground to the bone from overuse, then replace them with stumps after their hands have run their course.

...

They're not just peg legs, they're space pegs.
Or Space Legs, if you will.

...

>boring generic special forces with sci-fi vectors and a combine mask

wow im really impressed

>shoulder pads
Should have read rising the bar desu

He's not a good guy in the Episode 3 script. His role of "buying humanity time to live, even if as slaves" never changed.

...

...

It makes more sense in the context of the script where you see that even the most advanced weapon humans ever made is nothing to them.

If the Combine are so advanced why can't they make a rifle that shoots straight?

...

human interdimensional special forces sounds cool as fuck

imagine HL1 happening somewhere else but instead of vorts and headcrabs its combine operators black-bagging your starfish apartment

They're too advanced to care about trivial details such as that.

I'm pretty sure the breengrub twitter thing Laidlaw wrote confirmed that the slugs are only being possessed by the space god/virus/sentient meme that runs the Combine.

In the second game the tone painted it as if the excuse of "buying humanity sometime" was more of an excuse and he just sold out so he could live lavishly.

The Epistle makes him more sympathetic since they're practically torturing him (or a I guess a slug clone of him) and as we finally see the full scope of the Combine we realize that he really was just trying to buy time and fighting them is a lost cause.

...

...

its a threat to other humans who dont join the combine. you either join as a cop, opt for combine surgery, or you get turned into a stalker against your will

Don't cops eventually get promoted to overwatch anyway?

if they perform well and show that they are truly with the combine.

>the metrocops that see the jig is up after the Citadel's portal goes boom and decide to shoot their way to a train and get out, regardless of the rebels and overwatch

would have made a neat side game.

DUDE DYSON SPHERES LMAO

the virus in the psychic slugs allowed the combine to overwrite their minds with the mind of another, basically letting you copy your mind into a backup
the combine didn't start it, but they enjoyed taking full advantage of it

I sometimes have to double take to see if that's either a soldier or the Pyro

Because it was funny

>Pyro is a combine soldier/metro cop
How deep does the Valve lore go?

straight to the bottom of gabe's money pit.

...

>Human hands actually aren't that very well designed for pushing keyboard keys repeatedly for a long amount of time
how many hours a day do you spend on Sup Forums typing?
I think its safe to say human hands are faster at typing than nubs...

Aren't fingers really just tiny nubs?

at typing on a keyboard sure, but if the keyboard is say, a single button that inputs differently depending on the amount of pushes in a millisecond activated by some robotic servo, then perhaps the combine know better

that actually does sound really fucking cool, could have a whole do you try to go with your fellow squad or redeem yourself to the rebels and help

Where was this ever being mentioned anyway?

touche

The hl2 writers fanfiction thing called epistle 3 i think

"fanfiction"

...

don't know what you call it really hence "fanfiction thing"

its basically canon but not really

I can see why they wouldnt do this though, its not like they have check ups. They just modify their bodies and let them run until they stop functioning

They had so much more originally and it's like they threw away a more complete picture of the universe they'd settled on with the rewrite.

They've got allusions to their canned Prospero game in there (or the premise of it anyways).

this isnt really related but am i the only one that fucking hates ravenholm? i think about replaying hl2 every now and then and then i remember ravenholm and never do it. i dont even mind the driving parts desu

...

some of what Breen says was used in the propaganda voice overs in the first levels

RIP manwich

What's interesting to me is that his end speech there had to have been the full version of it before they cut out the specifics and reference to an "Aleph" universe. I've always said if they felt they wrote themselves into a corner with the episode shit, they could always reboot it into Prospero and feature Half-Life 3 or the end of Freeman's story in a prologue.

And the premise they had for Prospero sounded like it'd make a great VR game with current tech.

Personally? I don't go to Ravenholm.

If you knew that rebellion earned you this fate, how likely would you be to rebel?

I like ravenholm and all the driving but hate the level near the end where you have to lead civilians around because they're constantly getting in my way.

oh yeah i forgot about that, and those stupid mines you pull out of the ground. man hl2 kinda sucks in retrospect

Life in the HL2 is a nightmare not worth living. Death would be a reprieve.

The Combine conquered Earth in 7 hours. They were going to just exterminate the whole of the human race if it weren't for Breene.

Man, the fact that the flying grubs with the ability to instantly paralyze people with their minds aren't the leaders really puts the sheer strength of the combine into perspective.

the vorts?

im samefagging but i cant even think of an fps with worse gunplay than hl2 except maybe like bioshock

That sounds interesting

There was a lot of stuff to detract you from the gunplay, such as dicking around with the gravity gun, sicking bugs on people or driving vehicles. The levels before the gravity gun were the absolute worst though, I'll give you that.

Why didn't the Combine just use chemical weapons on Resistance fighters?

>fps with worse gunplay than hl2 except maybe like bioshock
Any Call of Duty game.

What in the molly fuck is that? A star in some sort of yoke?

looks like the superstructure of a bio-mechanical dyson sphere

A partially constructed Dyson sphere.

Is this in a mod, because I do not recall this from any of the games.
