So far they did nothing in Super that hasn't either been done or topped in original Dragon Ball.
One time they had a really bad ripple effect over pictures of planets and they said the universe was being ripped apart, but I'm pretty sure the show was just lying to me. Yet somehow the characters are stronger in Super even though Vegeta made a Final Flash so big it flew off into space and Gohan kicked a Cell Baby so hard in the head that it busted through an entire mountain range.

I'll never understand dragon ball as a franchise, especially this current tournament. The entire arc is about knocking people off and staying on till the end, jiren could have easily just punched everyone off one by one while casually strolling around. He wouldn't even have had to fight if he knocked everyone off asap before they powered up.

People seem to be misreading Jiren's words at the end. He's not revealing himself to be an asshole or anything of the sort. He's disappointed that, at one of the most crucial moments for their universe, Toppo threw everything he cared about away for a cheap power boost, and then lost -anyways-. It's also why he opens up to the 7 boys so much, he sees that they stick to their convictions no matter what.

You can barely even call Jiren an antagonist. He didn't cause the tournament, he doesn't want to erase the universe, he has no other goal or motive other than survival, and he has no personal relationship or rivalry with Goku and the rest other than the fact that they are the only ones strong enough to fight him. He is just another obstacle who is less developed some filler characters. People laugh at the El Padre grande meme and they should because it's retarded, but at least the Mexican bastards who made it realized this arc needed an actual antagonist and a little more to the story than just a long boring tournament with no tension or emotion and not even any heels to fight against. Shit Goku is a better villain for this arc than anyone else, he's a better heel than Jiren at least.

But even in the manga they give Goku credit for giving the Universe a chance at survival even though that makes the story about a hundred times less interesting.

He didn't have content prior development to work off of in terms of combat when 18 already had most of it. We didn't see what he was truly capable of until recent eps of Super, which is why his Super variant will be likely playable when the DLC hits.
