ITT things players won't experience anymore

>that time where there's a huge gap between save points, particularly because there's a boss marathon or a long dungeon, and you play it through the whole night until you are able to save because autosaving wasn't big back then

>limited lives
>password "save system"
>in-game cheat codes

I don't mind save points you can see while playing

what I DO mind is the only way of saving being a small little part of your menu that you can easily forget about. While I know it's me being a dumbass and not saving often, save points are a reminder to save.

are those games the ones that let you save everywhere?

>Resident Evil
>Whole night to save
A casual run takes 5 hours. Even DSP manages to have 15 minutes save gaps at worst.

it took me up to weeks to beat a single RE game as a kid. Partly because of ~2h / day gaming restrictions set up by my parents, partly because I truly played cautiously, exploring every nook and cranny.

the picture wasn't meant to represent my point, it was just the more iconic save "image" I could think of.

with that said ink ribbons don't exist in RE starting 4 right?

As someone who plays a lot of FFXIV
The sense of discovery in MMOs has been dead for a long time. When a new raid comes out, everyone just waits for the guide instead of trying the hard modes themselves. Even the fucking crafting system gets this treatment; every crafter waits to find out the optimal macros.

Correct. And manual save-spots practically disappeared post-4 as well.

>game is difficult but you can finish it in 1 hour if you know what you're doing

>things players won't experience anymore
Having to learn and master brand new control schemes.
Reading paper manuals.
Not being able to cheat and spoil parts of the games by Googling shit out.

We don't have "unlocks/bonuses if you have save of another game" anymore don't we?

Witcher 3 still had that just a couple years ago, as did MGS5 from GZ.

Last one I remember is Mass Effect 3.

You can still be a day one raider (more like hour one) and it's way more fun than waiting for a guide. Just be a NEET in a good static.

yeah, the save anywhere games. Pokemon is not the worst offender, but it is the first game I can think of that did this sort of thing. I know I just need to remind myself to save, but FUCK I can never remember to save. In contrast, in any game with save points, I NEVER forget to save because the game is flat out telling me to stop being stupid and save the game

...

Monster Hunter World does it (or is going to, rather) with Street Fighter V.

SMT IVF has this with IV

Doesn't one of RE7'S difficulties have limited saves/cassette tapes

A game where you have one life, if you die, you go back to the beginning of the game, or it resets.
E.g. Ghosts n' goblins, or Terminator 1 on Genesis.

bullshit like that is still around. you cant even pause in souls games offline. How is that not "trying to monopolize your time" but the new battlefront 2's unlockables supposedly are

>Pokemon is not the worst offender, but it is the first game I can think of that did this sort of thing.
you serious mate? Especially on PC, you've been able to save anywhere almost since the dawn of vidya. Goddamn Wolfenstein 3D from 1992 already provided nothing but manual saves.

I find it absolutely bizarre to think that there'd be someone who would not realize to save at least when quitting the game. Or if something big is about to happen soon.

This. Fucking GAME OVERs.

there's literally two (2) difficulties, and you can only choose the implied "hard mode" AFTER you have beaten the game once.

man I remembered my first experience of this with FFVIII, I inserted the new disc then reseted the system, turns out you shouldn't do that!

though it's a good thing games save before you are prompted for a disc switch. I don't think there's a game that doesn't save before a disc switch

>tfw we can't have no save runs that actually yield unlockables because modern games are too buggy

the time before weapon unlocks

I wouldn't really call it an offender, handheld games absolutely should let you save anywhere or at least suspend save

RE7 madhouse has the cassette tapes.

I was talking from a console perspective mostly, but your point still stands

it's not that I don't save before exiting the game or anything, or sometimes when I forget to save before a clearly big event. It's those times when you just randomly bite the dust, have to reload your save, and then realize you didn't save for the passed 3 hours. I know I'm hitting an extreme situation right now, but this has happened to me way too many times

That's not really a bad thing.
Same can be said for most nes/snes/genesis games.

>I was talking from a console perspective mostly, but your point still stands
I'm sure some Dragon Quest already made you save on your own back in mid-1980s, on NES.

Still, it's just a matter of learning to play cautiously. Saving often, holding multiple save states if you fuck up with latest one, and so on.
