Yeah, the reason the 3ds needs to be shelved is it's incredibly outdated and is holding the games back. It was sub-par as a handheld when it came out and the vita was a much better handheld. The only reason that the vita did badly and the 3ds did well is the 3ds actually had games while the vita had nothing.
I own both and I love playing with both of them but I wish that the 3ds was as powerful as the vita.

1) They want to have a budget system for younger players, giving them a separate revenue stream from Switch.
2) it has an install base of 70 million and Nintendo make an absolute fortune from proprietary software.

Switch is the replacement, later on Nintendo will either release the Supplemental Computing Device from the NX patent which probably is basically an external GPU in dock form running thru USB type C to boost Dock mode performance to cope up the huge power gap between Switch and PS5/XBTWO, OR just a revision of the actual Switch maybe with the Tegra P1? or just better battery, storage and wifi so the old model will receive a price cut and finally replace the 3DS completely

most special editions have one. for example the monster hunter generations 3ds and the golden zelda one are guaranteed dual ips screens.

Techically the DS wasn't meant to outright replace the GBA, it was meant to be a "3rd pillar." It was just so incredibly successful beyond their predictions that it killed the Gameboy line.
