Why don't game devs fucking compress their shit?

why don't game devs fucking compress their shit?
don't they know that large filesizes put people off?
no one looks at a large filesize and says "oh that must be a big game filled with content"
they think "fuck this will take 2 days to download and take up 1/4 of my hard drive space"

get better internet you faggot

if you don't have at least 100mbit you should not use the internet at all

easy for you to say europenis
burgerland and the rest of the world has shitternet

Because they don't need to, your constraint is time, not storage. Compression is a lost art.

I hate having to sit and wait for 20 minutes while the files unpack

according to the r*ddit post load times are almost exactly the same

>Who cares of I have to download 29GB of fucking NOTHING for no reason because of fast internet
You don't have to unpack at all, it works just like the game isn't compressed at all.

Compressing the fuck out things means more CPU has to be used during gameplay to decompress and use the files.

you sound dumb, you must be dumb.

It uses barely any extra cpu usage, maybe a problem if you have an 10 year old cpu, otherwise it's not noticeable whatsoever.

Would this not raise your RAM usage
Interested but I'm on a shitty chromebook turned windows machine

>take up 1/4 of my hard drive space
>His entire storage capacity for his computer is 120GB

Jesus christ user get it together

i don't think a chromebook would run any 3d game made past 2005

just an exaggeration and i was talking more about the 60GB and higher games that are coming out recently

You'd be very surprised

Why not? Intel's integrated graphics have been pretty good for a while.

>mfw i live in costa rica and have a 10mbit internet

>Not having at least 500 Mbps fiber
>Not having at least 10 TB of HDD space

And what's the fucking deal with save file sizes?
Some PS4 games take upwards of 100MB for a single savegame, while pic related had enough space for FFVII, Suikoden, Gran Turismo and more on a single MB

and you sound slow

There is a fair amount more data to keep track of these days user

Maybe, just maybe user there's a lot more variables being tracked in games these days

>12MB/s

You call THAT Euro internet?

fuck no there isn't. tell how any modern game needs more data than 150+ final fantasies.

There is not

Any game with a changing world based on things you have done, that other characters can comment on depending on order completed? Like fallout or witcher or the like

>a few event flags bump the savefile up by 10MB
You know that a character is a single byte right

>not even close to 100

you're just flipping bits from 0 to 1.
FF7,8 and 9 did keep track of character stats, items, chests and locations and did all that within 128kb each.
i accept that world building games like minecraft or whatever need space to save creations, but regular old rpgs have no business being over 100mb, even with a character creator

Because compression wastes my time. Heavily compressed downloads are fucking awful because it takes me longer to decompress the damn thing than it did to download the entire thing.

Storage space is cheap and for the most part the gains of compression are lost in the time spent to decompress.

Cause people programming shit have gotten progressively more brainlet. Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 was written in assembly by one man, modern games are written in all kinds of languages by brainlets that cant into optimization and efficiency. On top of that you have patches and fixes for games through internet.

Limited resources and "it werks" out of the box meant you couldn't be a brainlet. Powerful computers and after release patches means you can do whatever the fuck you want and get away with it causing a collective path to more and more brainlet-ism

Because fucking pajeets everywhere in the industry.

Apparently it's to deter pirates but I never understood that.

>download a 100gb game that's only 5 hours long

Thanks Obama.

>he doesn't know what megabit and megabyte are
