This game is a masterpiece

This game is a masterpiece

Starbound is better

Starbound is boring has fuck, unless you play while smoking some heavy shit

I never understood this. It's literally the same as Terraria with a fuckton more stuff.

If you actually think it is anywhere near the same as Terraria then you probably haven't played one or both games; they play so different.

>tfw you will never play it the first time again

it's a good game... just don't have the autistic drive to play SP all day erry day. I enjoy some MP every now and then.

>requires a wiki to enjoy
Into the trash...

>fuckton more stuff.
it has more furniture's and that's it

>grind out a tier of gear by farming material A
>use that gear to farm next tier of gear by farming material B, but you need slightly more
>Repeat C thru Z, sprinkle in a series of bosses whose difficulty is determined primarily by how much touch damage they deal when they slam themselves into you over and over.

Terraria is great if you're a creative autist, but the actual gameplay and progression is mediocre as fuck.

Nah, the new content has completely fucked over the game's progression. All the pre-Hardmode stuff has been made more than useless, and anything pre-Plantera is pretty shite now. Yo-Yos are overpowered because Red has a hardon for them, and the Dungeon Defenders crossover content completely removes any point to craft any equipment up until past Hallowed. Because of this, there's not much left that's rewarding in exploring and mining, and the building has always been the weakest point unless you're really into an obtuse way to make pixel art. That just leave the bosses but the core gameplay is so basic that none of them are really engaging.

It was a really satisfying game, but nowhere near a masterpiece, and it has only drifted farther away from that level of quality over time. Thankfully, Otherworld looks like it'll be much better, and that's only a spinoff.

Starbound barely skims the surface of the potential of all its features at best. Terraria is one big dynamic world instead of several static ones, and each item was pre-made so there's no chance of getting boring garbage. It has a real, interesting progression system that involves the entire world changing, and the fantasy aesthetic is a lot more popular/accessible than the (in my opinion) bland sci-fi theme.

The great part about Terraria is that the game can play out like this but there are always ways to skirt around certain tiers of items if you don't want to grind for specific ore. For example, you can catch a fish as powerful as a hellstone pickaxe at the beginning of the game.

Well, the game has a wiki built in with the Guide but for some reason people like to forget he exists

as someone who spent almost a thousand hours in terraria, starbound felt like a breath of fresh air.
But I got bored of it too quick.
Devs just kept making it worse and worse, removing the stuff I liked.

having to grind for cobalt/mythril/adamantite sucks though

the guide will never tell you what you need to do to get to the next boss

And other planets. And space stations. And ships...

That's true on paper, but not within its actual context. Items are preset but how they're distributed are terribly random, leaving you to grind enemies or search for chests for hours just to get something that's worth it. You say there's no chance of getting boring garbage, and yet players will go on for large stints of time with only finding breathing reeds and rope if they're unlucky. These items also mostly build upon lacking core gameplay mechanics, so until you get to the late game, the only interesting stuff you'll be getting is the magic weapons. You say the world is dynamic, but what does this really mean. Each world is going to have the exact same locations each time with only their locations slightly shifted around the map. On the other hand, you could be referring to the way that the Corruption/Crimson and Hallow spread after entering hardmode, but this is overall a very slow experience and almost the exact same for pretty much all other players. Your only big difference is if the crossing lines hit a snow or desert biome. The only progression event that really make huge changes to the map space is the Lunar Events, and that's an extremely lategame aspect that wasn't added until 4 years after the game's release. Then there's the fact that this interesting progression system that allegedly changes the world is built on slow grinding and pure chance for a large stint of it.

It's just not that great. Starbound and Terraria are two sides of the same meh coin. The only big difference is if you like fantasy or sci-fi

You deluded child

exploring should do that nicely though

Paragraphs retard use them

Oh I'm sorry

Are you used to a different kind of formatting

Does this work better for you?

Thats not an argument. Imagine putting a toddler infront of a computer running Football Manager and telling him to win the league. Thats how terraria treats you and the wiki is mandatory if you want to have ANY fun.

DUMBASS. DID Sup Forums TEENAGERS MAKE YOU DOUBT YOURSELF BECAUSE THEY WRITE THE WORDS REDDDIT TO YOU WHEN YOU WRITE PARAGRAPHS?

are you comparing yourself to a toddler?

Thats what you understood ?
I knew people here are retarded but colour me surprised after this one.

*were retarded

You do know where you have to go back to, don't you user

You might grind for enemies or chests if you had prior knowledge of their drops, but before hard mode most people are trying to map out the underground and climb up the ore tiers so finding those items are an extra bonus. I agree with the game being stupidly grindy after hardmode in some places, but that only affects you if there's specific things you really want.
I don't mean the world truly becomes something different each phase of the game, but there are events that change the world a tiny bit, and can be exciting for new players every once in a while. Messages like "A meteorite has landed!" gave me a sense of wonder for a moment when I first played. After hard mode there's new ores, new enemies, and new events taking over the previously familiar areas.

For the core gameplay, I agree it's pretty barebones, but they play around with it enough to make me feel like all of its potential has been explored. The knockback reponse of enemies against different attacks can be very satisfying, and more than enough for some people. Bosses are really generic, but they really did the squeezed the engine dry in terms of what mechanics they had towards the end.

Terraria is straight up my favorite game for a reason, I tried to like starbound a lot but it's just straight up inferior. On a surface level, Starbound seems like more, but it does so little with what it has.

TELL ME HOW EMPTY YOUR BALLS ARE RIGHT NOW. I WANT TO KNOW HOW OFTEN YOU ARE EMPTY WITHOUT CUM AND YOU TELL ME NOW YOU FAGGOT

shit i reddit formatted and had a stroke towards the end

No reasoning at all.

literally only flaw is having to grind/farm occasionally

Agree

It doesn't need to. The first three bosses and their mechanical variants all spawn themselves over time, and you will randomly find summoning items for them. You're also likely to spawn the Wall of Flesh by accident, and in general almost all bosses will be discovered through basic exploration and progression. I'd say Duke Fishron is the only boss that most players are unlikely to find on their own.

Even that's rewarding for Terraria though, in the same sense that you need to grind in Monster Hunter. Grinding isn't very boring in Terraria either because theres a lot that keeps you interested.
One of my favorite things about Terraria is how much of the game you can control and bend to your liking, improving and making things more efficient and such. It also allows being creative to have more utility, Starbound doesn't have much to homes other than being eye-candy.

true. some grinding parts are super tedious, though.
>pic related

See, I get that, because when I first played the game myself, it was pretty neato to go through all of those things. Having meteors fall and figuring out how to crack them at low level to get its special armor and gun was a fun experience, and many other bits and bobs through the rest are like that too. Delving into the Dungeon, finding demon altars outside the corruption, stumbling on advanced ores, and more is all great the first time through. It's just that after you peel back the veil and look at the game closely, it starts to fall apart, and the content added over time only facilitated this more. Old content that you slowly worked towards naturally in the past become a waste of time that you skip over either purposefully to get the objectively better new alternatives or accidentally stumble upon like the case of the extremely powerful Yo-Yos. Between the grind and the lopsided content additions, it just doesn't hold up the more time you invest into it, and it certainly doesn't have the same level of quality that it had 7 years ago.

damn so much of a brainlet you accidentally call yourself a toddler good lord
>"exploring should do that"
>"that's not an agrument"
>in a game about exploring
jeez, what boss got your panties in a knot? did you break a pink bulb by accident? talk to tailor boy during the night thinking he'd be your friend? break that in the middle of the hive?
All of the ways to summon bosses in this game plays on the player's curiosityoutside of eyeball boy being autosummoned after time if you're slow, it is an exploration game afterall

It is really? I bought it when it was for sale at $0.99 and never got around to playing it.

Don't worry user, reddit spacing was only a meme because of shitposters, structuring your shit so it is easy to read isn't a problem.

I see what the problem is now. I totally hate yoyos and tier-skipping items too. Even as an extreme min-maxer I went out of my way to avoid yoyos and huge gameplay skips like fishing picks or world chest weapons, so I didn't have the same level of disillusionment by the end.

I agree. The progression has slowly been getting more and more fucked.

>game has a world to explore so it must be bullshit and hide everything in a wiki

Then don't use the wiki or stop being a lazy faggot

Not with that atrocious combat and stuff like truffle worms, but yeah it's bretti gud.
Wish those cunts updated the Vita version to 1.3 tho, lazy assholes.

It can be overwhelming at first.

Play Softcore and Normal World for your first game. Small or Medium Size recommended.

You can show items to the guide and he'll show you what you can make.

A house needs walls, a chair and a table-like surface for npcs to live in.

You can just dig and explore. If you find something that says "Material" it can make something else, show it to the guide.

>atrocious combat

You're saying that exploration in a game about exploration isn't a way to progress the game.

>I found this eyeball thing in a chest! I wonder what it does!
>I found these weird orb things in the corruption and a message pops up each time I break one! I wonder what happens if I keep breaking more!
>There's this weird thing in a beehive in the jungle, what happens if I break it!
>an enemy in hardmode dropped this mechanical worm, I bet it spawns a boss!

plus a million more, the game progresses from exploration, it's not that hard.

The only one that might be a stretch is Wall of Flesh, but a lot of times the doll falls into lava anyways.

Lets make everything vague as fuck to make the game look longer xD

Unless the bosses and all possible npcs you can find are just the icing on the cake and the main part of the gameplay is putting dirt blocks on top of each other to survive the night then there must be something wrong..

>Floaty Yo Yo simulator
>Good
Oh yeah, I sure enjoy literal flash tier combat where 90% of the weapons you get never have any relevance at any point in the game.

I disagree. Having more options to progress is good. And I personally still find Yo-yo's less enjoyable/efficient to use than guns and spells. Melee really needed them though, swords are boring and kind of suck.

What the fuck do you want? An ingame wiki?

That's on purpose so you can start a new game and get to the new content

>I personally still find Yo-yo's less enjoyable/efficient to use than guns and spells.
At almost any tier Yo-Yos eclipse both.
Only endgame guns with stuff like Ichor/explosive/clorophyte rounds can compete with Yo-yos, and most likely yo yos still end up beind better for DPS, guns do have Ichor bullets though so they can still be very relevant, and admittedly the Megashark is still pretty damn strong when you can access it.
Magic consumes mana which makes it already inferior to Yo-Yos in most scenarios, and unless you really get lucky with some drops early on Yo-Yos can still dominate in terms of viability, damage and functionality, Magic is strong but requires considerably more effort than Yo-Yos.

The only other things that can compete are those weapons like the lance of the corruptor, vampire knives or death's scythe, but pretty much all of those are post-plantera stuff anyway, where there's not much left to get or kill in the game outside of "hidden" bosses like Fishtron or events like the Pumpkin/Frost Moon, Old One's Army and the Lunatic enemies.

The guide is literally an in-game wiki

>reddit spacing meme
You meme loving fuck

Underrated post

what a nig

seriously the whole "reddit spacing" shit is the cringiest shit ever. Didn't even become a thing til around 2013 lol. People will do anything to feel cool even though this is a fucking user imageboard

Go back to

Oh man, you got him! He'll certainly never anonymously post on this board ever again!

Thank you Sup Forums defender you have saved us again!!!!

>look mom! I'm pretty cool because I'm repeating what these cool guys on fohr-chan say! Look at me goooo!

Nice comeback lad, that third person sarcastic critique of that user's sincere suggestion definitely put him in his place, and proved you're certainly not a faggot from reddit. I applaud you, quality post.

You are literal underage cancer and you have no idea what are you talking about.
To prove my point? You never worked in an office environment and if you did probably your coworkers cringed every time you wrote an e-mail.

Yes!!! I love the frog!!! Thank you defender!!!

>frogposter
post disregarded

This, the game and the Guide encourage you to explore and will push you to where you need to go next. Get enough health and the Eye of Cthulhu will spawn. Explore the Corruption/Crimson and destroy enough Demon Orbs/Crimson Hearts to spawn the Eater of Worlds/Brain of Cthulhu. Explore the Jungle and you'll likely find a beehive for Queen Bee. Encounter the Dungeon and the Old Man will tell you how to fight Skeletron to get in. Then both the Guide and the Arms Dealer will hint at how to summon the Wall of Flesh to activate Hard Mode.

Come Hard Mode and you get the Pwnhammer, which explicitly tells you that you can now break Demon Altars with it. Doing so will randomly make the mechanical bosses spawn, and random enemies can also drop the summoning items for them. Beat all three and the game will tell you to go back to the Jungle. Kill Plantera and you'll get a key to the sealed Temple, as well as the game telling you to go back to the Dungeon. Defeat the Golem and the Cultists will appear at the Dungeon. Kill the Cultists to make the Lunar Event start, so you can fight Moon Lord.

Most of the game is pretty straightforward, even if it is just hints at the time. The side stuff is you going out of your way to find it.

>implying every job is an office job
>implying I would ever reduce myself to being a wagecuck
Get meme'd plebbitards

pepe is EPIC haha nice post dude

Too bad there's no tanks or apaches in it

Wow, look at a meme loving faggot that wastes perfectly good oxygen.

well meme'd my friend, you definitely showed them you are hotshot and they are lowlifes.

>he doesnt know

No, there are literally NO tanks OR apaches in terraria. You're thinking of a different game.

I'm pretty sure you can find an Apache on Terraria, though.

>obvious troll is obvious
>all these triggered newfags

NO. You're WRONG. There are LITERALLY ZERO TANKS OR APACHES IN TERRARIA.

That user's right though, there are in fact both apaches and tanks in the base game, unmodded.

Then prove to me that there are Tanks and Apaches in Terraria. Post a screenshot if you're so sure.

so true.
i recently finally got my PDA and im ecstatic!

Clearly you've never done the Frost Moon invasion.

Will the game ever get another (big) update?
Man, it brings so many memories. I used to pay with my best friend and now we rarely talk to each other...

>Tanks and Apaches
literally Frost Moon

Damn I didn't know they actually put tanks and apaches in Terraria, I was just memeing. Did they do that because of the video?

>enemies that bump into you
>enemies that fly into you
>0.05% drop rates

It's a shitty game.

>land on the first planet in Starbound
>so comfy
>explore
>fuck this is amazing
>escape planet
>go to second planet
>realise it's the same shit again
>get bored
>uninstall

Don't think so, but it's been a while.

people are hoping that since the next update is taking so long that it's gonna be big, but I kinda doubt it. Honestly Terraria is already at the limits of it's engine, I don't think it's got many more big updates in it anymore. That's why Otherworld and Terraria 2 are both things, because Terraria it self is basically nearing the end of it's life at this point.

History of me playing Starbound.

Allow me to provide some then.
At it's base, Terraria is a more structured and crafted experience, of which provides actual differences in environment as you progress.
Starbound ends up mostly feeling like you deal with re-skinned areas most of the time, and most of the enemies lack any real design behind them

Terraria is pure quantity over quality.

I love Terraria, i just don't like how easily you can "skip" through content.
I'd prefer some system that obligatorizes me to go through all biomes and bosses

When is the Switch version dropping? Did they abandon it?

Real talk Starbound made one (1) good thing. Everything else is so horrifically shit.

BUT M-MUH PROCEDURAL GENERATION

Is Otherworld still stuck in development hell or is there any new news about it?

development hell

Relogic just recently took over development

How will Soybounders ever recover??
