Mighty No 9

I just played through this game recently and I don't get why everyone's acting like it's the second coming of sonic 06. Am I missing something here? Sure it had some questionable level design and performance issues, but I don't see what about this game is that catastrophically bad. Did it get patched or something?

A woman was tangentially related with its development, and guess what was trending on Sup Forums around that time.

It proves companies do all the work while guys KEIJI and kojimbo was just figureheads.

It's a bland mess of a game that's ugly as hell to boot. It feels like some Chinese Mega Man knock off, or some cheap gamecube game. On its own, it's totally forgettable and not the "Return to Glory by the creator of mega man" it was hyped up to be.

Oh, it's a bland middle of the road uninspired mega man game with bad level design? We got a million of those. Why do we need another one?

Keiji is just a middle-manager with some ideas. Pretty typical of producers in Film and gaming.

Kojima is actually a writer and director. Sure, that's not everything in the game, but the games story is at least entirely his. The stories are so idiosyncratic and frankly often quite stupid it has to be work of one guy. If there was any kind of committee they'd veto lots of this shit.

There used to be another writer with him but he left.

It's decent. the internet just loves to scream hyperbolized shit

Fukushima wrote codec dialogue under Kojima's guidance.

Nice try, but no one cared about her after a month.
I like the game, but it is super bad. It's not completely Sonic 06, but there's a lot of elements shared between the two games.
>Extra characters that change the gameplay in mostly negative ways
>Traps and enemies that are impossible to avoid on a first playthrough
>Generally bad pacing and level design
>Worthless unbalanced abilities
>Shit optimization with FPS drops in a lot of areas
It's a crap game, but like Sonic 06 it can be fun to play through if you know what you're getting into.

It's bland and uninteresting. With questionable design choices. And that it's greatest crime. Now that MM11 is a thing people can finally sweep MN9 into the closet where it belongs. It's not unplayable. Just disappointing even if you never knew anything about it's reputation.

"questionable level design" is taking it lightly.
Who thought it was a good idea to make a level without a single checkpoint!?
Who thought making you stand in a closed room and shoot enemies for a full minute is fun? (this happens in like every stage)
Who thought placing a spike pit below the camera was a good idea!?
And so much more. There's a lot of wtf moments like that in this game. And the difficulty in this game is all over the place. There's no substance or a sense of pace like in actual megaman, here the levels are 80% straight corridors with enemies and 10% basic platforming. The 10% remaining are the parts where the level designers actually woke up, and then made hardcore challenges with instant death spikes.

>Worthless unbalanced abilities
desu this could be said about the old mm games too, outside of things like metal blade I think most people just used the weapons for bosses and went full buster aside from that.

I think it has a lot to do with it being one of the first, if not THE first poster child for major titles that were crowdfunded. That thousands of people poured an aggregate millions of dollars into what amounted to be a bland Megaman knockoff didn't leave the best taste in people's mouths. Also, if I recall correctly Inafune still hasn't made good on all of the promises made, in part because he overestimated the difficulty of it all but that's his problem, not ours.

The game was hyped to heavens to be this big "fuck you" to Capcom. It basically collapsed under it's own pressure.

Inafune trying to go guns blazing out the gate and Deep Silver's stupid trailers didn't help matters either.

Speaking of hype and promises. How is that MN9 cartoon going? I've heard more about the Megaman cartoon at this point, and it was started years later. And any updates on the MM Legends spiritual sequel?

It's not what it was hyped to be. And while usually that would be a minor complaint, here it's more prominent because even as it was in development the promise was that this would be mega man/x with a different name.
And not just in genre, it was supposed to hold the essence of previous megaman titles while being free from corporate meddling since it was being crowdfunded. And with the budget it got from said funding, there was no excuse for this fun yet mediocre game to be the end result. It vaguely resembles megaman but that's about it.

>How is that MN9 cartoon going? I
Canned.
>And any updates on the MM Legends spiritual sequel?
The OVA came out sometime last year. The game is presumably scrapped.

Died years ago. They were just so confident it would happen they announced it before they had any deal in place. All that happened was they made a promo video to show to investors, and then no investors took interest. Why would they?

It's just a Mega Man knock off. They could make their own MM knock off without Inafune if they wanted to. MN9 isn't some big hot property. MM is, and has a long history, which is why making an anime is a big deal.

>vaguely resembles megaman
I think mighty no 9 is the closest you can get to megaman without getting a lawsuit from capcom

>And any updates on the MM Legends spiritual sequel?

In 2016 they got Red Ash shirts for the team. That is literally the last news about the game.

Conflicting mechanics, like the idea of dashing through multiple enemies which can't be done half the tome because your gun doesn't penetrate, instant death traps requireing flawless execution, instant death traps requiring memorisation since they are imposible to react to the first time, level design seemingly completely seprate from the actual mechanics resulting in bland levels that don't take advantage of what you can do, boss weapons either suck or are broken, bosses take way too much damage to kill, some bosses are nigh impossibleto hit with their "weakness", the game gives away the weakness order so you don't get to figure it out yourself, it looks ugly, it's poorly optimised, it's been known to crash on consoles, the final boss blends into the background, the cutscenes are too plentiful and look awful, kickstarter rewards were late as fuck and bad when and if they arrived, it was delayed like 5 times, inafune started 2 more kickstarters for a Mega Man Legends equivelent and accociated anime before MN9 delivered, inafune sold rights for a MN9 show before the game delivered, obscene amounts of money was payed by backers to make it all happen.
But other than that I guess it's fine.

Eventually.
