diablo2 is better because the items have a huge impact

the build and the items often change everything about the game, while in modern games, the items just make small stat changes to the same exact playstyle that you've always been using

something as simple as a +80 mana ring can allow you to spam your most powerful abilities constantly, for example, and there are much better items

I don't play arpgs, but i'm on the third act, and the 1st act is 12 hours of hold left mouse to kill mob. picks up after that, but not enough going on scope wise if you ask me, levels take forever to get and equipment just isn't exciting.

Play vanilla then and decide whether you want the Ashes of Malmouth expansion once you finish the vanilla storyline. Crucible is an arena mode and is not needed to enjoy the game fully.

The Crucible DLC is completely optional. It is just a separate game mode where you fight waves of monsters and gain exp and items as a reward. But there are no exclusive items or such things.
The Malmouth expansion is a must have.

Ashes of Malmouth is amazing. Very good area design and it's atmospheric as fuck. Absolutely worth the money, if you like the base game.

I have Wolcen, it's not that great or worth it.
The Warhammer one looks nice but almost definitely lacks content.

I used to love TQ a lot, but wasnt able to get into it recently because my autism can no longer handle its slow pacing and single target attacks after all the time spent sweeping multiple screens of trash with single button in poe.

In TQ's case it actually works since it's a fuckhuge journey over the world fighting all kinds of mystical shit and saving the world of man.

It is currently the best ARPG.

Depends on what you look for.
Its not as 'deep' as PoE since the meta is not subject to a lot of change. Also, very limited trading.
Its not as polished, gameplay wise, as D3. But more flexibiliy.
Its a good compromise of those qualities.

If you just want to complete all the acts then you don't really need good gear in PoE.

Literally noone cares about the acts. After a while you just run them as fast as possible like a robot.

D2 legitimately doesn't hold up today in a lot of ways. Runs at like 800x600@60fps & combat is pretty abysmal.

But grinding is part of the fun. I got bored from playing Grim Dawn when I hit max level with my Commando and and found the last good gear piece.

It's in alpha, less than half the skill progression is done/mapped out. All the quests etc currently in the game are just there so people have something to do.
I bought it anyway because the swordplay feels so satisfying with basic attack combos and I like the umbra/rage system.

Hopefully it'll be a great full game one day but it's not even 30% yet.
You could always pirate the current version and keep it on your watch list if you like the gameplay though.

I know it doesn't hold up well in many aspects, but it's still more addicting than D3 is. When you consider how much more fun the game is compared to D3, and then compare how much older it is it really makes you take a long hard look at D3.

How did you waste your life with 3? I blazed through it for the first two months after release, made a profit from selling all the gear and money on the RMAH and then dumped it because it's a horrible game.

D3 is an ok arcade action game, not really an ARPG even. D2 has way better art direction, theme, & character building.

It's actually shit compared to PoE, I tried to play recently. Skill trees are garbage and boring, 3/4 of skills are useless, all fun builds are gated behing piles of undroppable runes, mechanics are shallow and shit compared to PoE, and game is 5 times slower (this is subjective, but I like supersonic speeds in PoE).

Done intentionally since both games were meant to be part of a ramp to Torchlight 3, Runic Games' true AAA break-in. They never got there due to lackluster sales and poor studio direction, though. It's a sad story, not one Kotaku would tell you.

PoE was also released 13 years after Diablo 2

It still has better music and atmosphere than PoE.

The fun in these games for me is in coming up with cool builds and testing the limits of the game.

How's the performance? It's kind of interesting to see someone using the CryEngine for something as intensive and populous as a H&S game. Are there a shitton of mobs or is it pretty sparse compared to the likes of Diablo and PoE?

I would be careful with that one.
It's pretty good for one run, but the game mechanics work really bad for the higher difficulties. The itemization is especially problematic. You will find that in grim dawn most items just fit one out of like 30+ possible builds - ultimately putting the chance of actually finding something good at any point in the game extremely low. You will wish back the diablo itemization, where many items could be used by various classes and builds. What's worse, in grim dawn you will find that many build have hardly any items catering to them.

I could not get into Path of Exile at all. Game was just too ugly for me. All of the classes were uninteresting, too. Maybe it gets better later on, but I really couldn't play for long before I just stopped. And I love Diablo 2, one of my favorite games ever.

They did an overhaul of the graphics and it looks pretty solid now compared to the trash from before. Also, classes don't really exist other than determining the starting position on the tree & which ascendancy you can specialize in.
