Yeah. My favorite console to emulate. So much nostalgia and good library.

Yes, it was the best console of its generation.

fuck off

MASSIVE library of good to great games.
Literally hundreds.

PS1 was the best console. PSP has 1:1 emulation of it is pretty good modern replacement for it if iyou don't mind not using analogue sticks.

no it was for trailer trash who used it to play their limp bizkit cds

While being rather underpowered to the N64 it still had plenty of great games
N64 was superior though.

Jokes on you, I used it to play ICP cd's

the 64 was a piece of shit with 1 game worth playing

sure if you were a loser with no friends

bomberman ofc

Absolute golden age and I have owned nearly every major console since the Atari 2600.

It was the time when massive amounts of money were being poured into making good games full of content. Ass rape monetisation by big publishers wasn't a thing until after the PS1.

let's be real: was it really a master?

*has a fucking LAN PARTY with my friend for 12 hours every weekend*

YOU COULD FUCKING PLUG 2 PLAYSTATIONS TOGETHER AND USE 2 TV'S FOR WESTWOOD GAMES

enjoy your splitscreen goldeneye fags

I mean if you like final fantasy and rpgs the console beats out the n64 pretty badly

without that series it comes kinda close I guess, but overally its still a great and has a worthwhile library to play to this day

It was good, both it and the n64 were on about the same level. I stand by that 6th gen was the true golden age, though.

Against Saturn, N64 and Dreamcast It's easy to be great.

Well, the alternative was still using fucking cartridges.

Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, Tactics

Metal Gear Solid

Gran Turismo 1, 2

Tomb Raider 1, 2, 3

GTA 1, 2

Tekken 2, 3

Silent Hill 1, 2

Resident Evil 1, 2, 3

Crash Bandicoot

Wipeout

It was the birth of many of the biggest game franchises ever made, and for games that are still made sequels of today.

N64 was also great, but PS1 had the much better library.

Undoubtedly the best era for gaming, the strides forward it made were incredible, each year significant improvements were made, compared to today where you wait 5 years for a title to be released which has all the same mechanics as 5 other games like it.

It's the best Sony console.

this, ps1 days were just pure competition between game developers and the marketing campaign was just some demo discs and ads in magazines

No. Thousands of games and yet the vast majority of them are dull JRPGs, crappy mascot platformers, movie games, and otherwise completely forgettable action games.

>Silent Hill 2
>PS1

Got mixed up with parasite eve....it's been 20 years, let an old man off....

98% of its games ranged from forgettable to garbage, but they made so many of them that the remaining 2% was still enough to be a truckload of good-to-great titles.

Final fantasy 7 was also released on windows

Metal gear solid was also released on windows

Tomb Raider start on sega saturn and was released on DOS the same time as PSX

GTA was also released on windows

Silent hill 2 was also released on windows

If this was today people would say it has no gaems, especially since all of the PSX ports have the damned no z-buffer glitchery.

This

PS1 is my favorite PS

On Windows95. And about 10 people in the world had machines that ran any of those decently when released.

And the bugs and jank on those, holy shit.

Better than 2 that's for sure

Fuck yes it was. I cant say it was objectively the best console ever over PS2 or NES, but it was my personal favourite for sure. Huge, diverse library and it was just a fucking cool console that changed the image of gaming and gamers.

And oh yeah - fuck N64!!!! HAHA youve got no games faggots!!!

Ignoring the fact they were released much after, as per the norm with PC gaming....

*blocks n64's path*

Nope. It's good only if you have a lot of nostalgia for that era. I don't. I didn't even think the games were good at the time.

>balding receded hairline

lol, I was about to say thats not me, but it doesn't matter because my hair is receeding too! :(

Those fucking demo disks were so fucking cool.

Never had one growing up, had the N64 instead.
I now have a Retropie fitted Raspberry Pi 3 though, which emulates it perfectly, and I have been having a blast playing some of the classics. The N64 had it's charming games, but with the insane library of the PS1 it probably has as many great games as the N64 had in its entire library.

Supposedly the PS1 was godly for cd musik playback for some Sony reason. So there was literally audiophiles using them just to listen to Toto over their 5000$ hifi stereo setups

Yes, it really was. Especially when you consider how insanely overrated the best games on the N64 were.

who even had more than one TV and enough power outlets in the same room to pull that off?

The 1 thing it lost over, was the decision not to include the dual joystick controller in the first model.
N64 was revolutionary with its mandatory analog stick movement controls (even if the stick was shit), while many PS1 games would be stuck with digital d-pad to accomodate everyone

We used to steal his dad's tv from the living room like dicks.

For japs it was, not really sure for anyone else.

>Was it really all that great?

yes it was, and it was all about the software
it had a massive library of great and shit games, but even the shit games weren't anything close to the shovelware that you saw on the earlier console generation
for instance some game called "2xtreme" is very poorly reviewed but it was kickass coop
at the time it had the "mature" games while the N64 seemed to only have kiddie shit
there were demo discs that came in magazines and other places, this was actually really important for me and my brothers as buying the new games was rare
I still remember playing the demo "High Octane"
it had a great controller compared to the N64's retardation
I can look back on it now and compare the hardware, but at the time all I cared about were the games
N64 had Mario and Goldeneye

youtu.be/QrKm3gBcWIg

Besides demo discs, the fucking games being sold used at electronics boutique for only 8 dollars got me SO many rpg's to play.

Bought suikoden's, wild arms, etc on a whim because they were so cheap and never was disappointed.

>redesigned trash
OG SMS is the best SMS.

The hardware of this system is really underrated due the lack of perspective correction.
It was a system with an effectively 386 tier CPU being able to pull graphics as well as a pentium 166 in softmode, thanks to all the 3D hardware accelerated shenigans.
Thing even had a coprocessor meant for T&L math, stuff unseen on PC pretty much until the original geforce.

Good Library. Good Controllers. Good features. Good balance of audio graphics and storage. Developer friendly hardware.

Terrible system though. CD wore out really easily over the years. Nothing worse than a game freezing during a cutscene when you haven't had a chance to save in hours.
Propping the system up on a sandle so the worn out lazer can still work was annoying too.

I played Ocarina of time so much if only because I new I wouldn't have to wait 20 seconds for each screen to load.

Thank god PS2 was backwards compatible,

>for the time, yes
>for today, no
Times change user, the playstation is only good today is for playing games that aren't available of the ps4 or steam. Its still cool to have thought

It only sold because it was easy to pirate the games

No. Actually it sucked hard. At this time most games on PC were the best, also almost the same library (well except Japan of course, then the PS1 was better).

I had most consoles of that gen, the were all "OK", but also all sucked in some way. PC did well especially with clean 3D and general a lot of games

5th generation in general sucked.

You mean PSP is fully backwards compatible?

Technically since you can download a ISO to PSP program that will convert your games to be able to be played on your psp

It is, you just need to softmod the PSP.

>I played Ocarina of time so much if only because I new I wouldn't have to wait 20 seconds for each screen to load.

You're sure it wasn't just the total dearth of any other worthwhile games on the n64?

>PSP has 1:1 emulation of it
Wrong, several games run a lot worse on the PSP like Crash Team Racing or Wipeout 2097.

Your 10 year old toaster PC will emulate better than the PSP will. Actually, your phone probably will too but then you have to worry about controls.

You'll always find one or two games that have issues, but generaly works flawlessly.
Even in the PS2 some PS1 games have problems, Metal Gear Solid crashes in the credits and makes impossible to replay the game with Meryl's or Otacon's reward.

>It's 1:1 and flawless but it has issues

I got a PS TV recently and I don't regret it one bit.
They aren't being produced anymore so you can get them on an exploitable firmware brand new in stores for 20-30 bucks or eurocoins, it will onky cost extra if you don't have a DualShock 3 or 4 as it doesn't come with any controllers.
They also don't come with any VITA memory cards, but that's a non issue as you take advantage of the USB port and mount a USB drive as a VITA memory card once you get homebrew on it (which is more simple than on 3DS).
I can play all PlayStation, PSP and most VITA games on this for free, plus all the usual emulators.
I'm doing an MGS marathon right now, playing the first three games and Peace Walker, I'll do Vanilla Ware after that.
/shill

They've been out of production for a while, can you still get them cheap?

Yep.

I got a vita though, don't care for tv gaming. Have a bunch of psvita, psp, psx, snes and gba games on a 256gb card. Ultimate emu system with great controls and beautiful oled screen, couldn't be happier.

With regards to emulation, are there any platforms that remove the kinda rippling poly effect that was happening on the original hardware? I've tried ePSXe and it occurs on there, at least with standard settings - although I guess it would, given that it's trying to emulate the hardware, not fix it. Still, am I in luck?

Haven't played with it myself but I think this is what you're looking for.

Thx bae, you've made my week

No other mainstream console has so many well known 'games only I played' solely due to how fucking many great games were on it that as a child you only reasonably had access to a small handful of them.

N64 had some great games sure, but pretty much everyone played every single game worth playing on that system.

>was it really a master?
compared to the NES is was a god, the difference in hardware was akin to a 360 being compared to a Wii

the library wasn't as good as the NES' though, Nintendo had all the 3rd party deals, but there's a fair share of gems too

Kinda.
CPU was the same shit despise the clock rate difference due the Z80 taking more cycles to do the same instructions. I bet the real limiter was the ROM speed, so they just set the clock rate of the CPUs to match it.
Video SMS was indeed better, as you could use any of it's 16 colors on any pixel of the 8x8 blocks, instead of being limited to 4 colors per 8x8 block as on the NES.

And audio well, the NES absolutely demolishes the SMS in audio, due being able to completely configure the square wave output, having a triangle wave channel for bass like audio and even being able to play PCM samples (see konami games/SMB3)

SMS KINDA could play samples, but was on a way that used the CPU time completely, and still didn't sounded as good as the NES DPCM channel.

Off the top of my head:
>Castlevania: SotN -hilarious dub edition-
>Einhander
>R-Type Delta
>Metal Gear Solid
>Final Fantasy Tactics
>Vagrant Story
>Parasite Eve
>Valkyrie Profile
>Rival Schools
>Destrega
>Trap Gunner
>Alundra
>Brave Fencer Musashi
>Misadventures of Tron Bonne
>Tales of Destiny
>Xenogears
>Arc the Lad
>Wild Arms 1 & 2
>Elemental Gearbolt
>Gradius Gaiden

I'd say yeah

No it got quantity over quality.wothout Nintendo's restrictions (very similar to steams lack of controls) every shit 2bit dev ran to the thing. There was a whole lot of shovelwave.

I had a friend who visited my house solely to play this with me

not that I minded

More like it had quantity AND quality.

I did the same desu.

Why does Sup Forums literally have to shit on every single thing... get a job...

Quite so, it has a decent library of titles. Like it or not, third party support keeps a console alive and attractive. This console had plenty of that. I have a ps1 library of 140 games that I would rate as good. It had most of the iconic titles for that specific generation, while Nintendo had too much Nintendo and that was it.

I would say for instance, the DS rivals it. However the PS1 has the bigger library of JRPGs.

Sorry, that number is way off. I actually have 230. I was thinking of the space it takes on my hard drive (138GB).
