Resident Evil

I have never played a Resident Evil game. What's the best way to get into the series? Better if the games are available on Steam.

The easiest way to get into it is by thinking of it like a meal, you want to start simple and work your way into the series. So start with RE1 (a salad) and go through the main titles. I'd recommend skipping RE6 as it's complete shit (plate with shit in the middle).

>food analogy
Don't listen to this retard. But do start with RE1. Not because it's a """salad""" but because it's still a good video game to this day.

REmake, Zero, 4, 5 (if you have a buddy for co-op), 7

Is the Revelations series worth shit?

>5 (if you have a buddy for co-op)
Trust me... the AI is shit.

all of these game are subpar except for 7
play RE1:DC, 3, 7 (and Outbreaks if you're willing to setup an emulator for a godly experience)
out of the action games play only 5 (only if you have a friend) and Rev2

...

>What's the best way to get into the series?
Resident EVil 1.
>Steam
Resident Evil REmake.
Start with Jill, on highest initially available difficulty, and use classic control scheme.

Next, emulate 2-3.
Then grab RE4 Ultimate on Steam.
Stop there ,and forget the series.

revelations 2 is pretty good, especially the raidmode

REmake if you want survival horror, RE4 if you want action horror. If you enjoy those then play the other games in those styles, with 7 being a bit of an outlier but closer to the former than the latter.

Play the first one, do not start with REmake.
The basic order, no optional titles, is
>1
>2
>3
>CV
>REmake
>0
>4
>5
>REv2
>6
>7

>no Outbreaks
>skipping RE1

Forgot to mention, best way to play 1-3 is via emulation for the first time. Best versions are
>1
PS1 Director's Cut (not Dualshock) or DS.
>2
GCN or Dreamcast. PS1 Dualshock and N64 are also fine
>3
Same as above, remove N64

>no Outbreaks
They're shit offline, and not part of canon.

>skipping RE1
REmake is a fine substitute and replacement. Especially nowadays, younger players already have hard time "getting into" older games like this, so REmake can work as a fine bridge for them.

I got my GF into the series that way not too long ago. She fell in love with REmake, played it 4 times in a row on her own, and later finished RE2 as well. We just started RE3 last weekend.

REmake, if you liked it play 2, 3 and veronica or even try the original 1. Watch Outbreak intro.
4 is the best from the more action oriented era. You like Wesker play 5. Chris has a boyfriend in 6.

here's a nifty guides for the version differences of 2 & 3.
when in doubt, just play the PS1 originals. They're easiest to emulate too.

My order is truly correct. Disregard all the others.
Re 4
Re revelations 2
Re 7
No more REs needed.

The three notable entires to play if you wish to play the minimum amount of games wit hthe most variety are REmake, 4, and 7.

The must plays outside of that are 2, 3, and 5's DLC.

Optionals are Code Veronia if you want to see more of Chris and Wesker's relationship, 5 if you have a good co-op buddy because the AI is dogshit but the gameplay is just 4 again so it can be a blast to co-op, and 6's Mercenaries mode for the best third person shooter controls ever made.

RE1 / REmake.
Practically the same thing when it comes to the core gameplay, story and setting, but there's also plenty of small changes and differences to justify playing both, back to back. And yes, you should play BOTH characters before moving on.

Re1>Re2>Re3>CV>Remake>RE4>RE5>RE6>Rev2>RE7
This is the best order.
0 and Rev1 are awful and doesn't matter storywise, so can be skipped

>they're shit offline
then don't play them offline, duh. it's not that hard to find people that aren't 1337 year old veterans playing it

when people say REmake they mean the RE1 HD Remaster?

RE0 kinda does matter storywise at least a little, but that can be covered either by watching it on youtube or reading about it from reliable source.

they mean the 2002 release on GameCube or the HD Remaster on PC and next-gen platforms, yes

>then don't play them offline, duh.
Official servers are long gone, not everyone owns PS2, even less have online capable ones, and playing them online requires either hacks or emulation with hacks.
Something a typical rookie would not bother with.

And again: they don't matter one bit when it comes to the main series' plot.

REmake = the GC remake of RE1, which only recently (2014) got HD port on PC and all consoles.

Do you think you should start a series on the best game, since every game after that is a step down?

If so, buy REmake.

Buy a PS3 (They're piss cheap now)
Wait for a sale if patient enough, buy the RE super pack which contains nearly every game in the series besides Revelations 1 & 2 and REmake & 0.

If you can't be fucked shifting through all of them I'd only recommend bothering with REmake, 4 and 7.

Yes, you should start with the best, that's why you have to buy RE4.

No need to play remake. Change it for revelations 2.. Perfect combo looks like this: re4, rev2 and re7.

And be left confused with the story? No matter the quality of the game, it's best to start with the first one for the sake of proper continuity.

>do not start with REmake
Why?

Steam is kind of a bad way to get into it because you will miss out on RE2, RE3 and Code Veronica. You know im gonna say release order OP... if you had a PS3 and a PS4, you could play EVERY mainline entry in the series between the two consoles:

Resident Evil
Resident Evil 2
Resident Evil 3
Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Resident Evil REmake
Resident Evil 0
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil 6
Resident Evil Revelations
Resident Evil Revelations 2
Resident Evil VII

All of that can be done between PS3 and PS4 with only 1-3 being a PS3 requirment. Some people say choose the 720p widescreen HD remaster of CV over the 1080p 4:3 PS2 version on PS4 but.... eh.

You can read the story on wikipedia. Now you sound like one of those faggots who says that you must play both original metal gears before playing metal gear solid.

Don't be silly, MGS comes with the written out recap of previous story for simplicity sake.

Like nowadays you can read the plot of the previous REs on wikipedia. It will take no more than five minutes.

Why do people keep saying not to play REmake first?

Is it too good?

No. People say to play re4 first.

And be robbed of an experience. RE1 and REmake are pretty good games, why are you so opposed to people playing it first?

REmake,2-3-4-5-6-7,0

If you want to like the series, start with 4

Because of shit controls and outdated gameplay. Like metal gears the older resident evils are not fun to play nowadays.

>You can read the story on wikipedia.
Could everyone even considering doing this with ANY game please instantly kill yourself? Please?

>Because of shit controls and outdated gameplay. Like metal gears the older resident evils are not fun to play nowadays.
Is this what a decade of TLOU and CoD clones has done to Xbox-gen kids??

I got into MGS-series for the first time in 2011, and RE series in 2015, and I started both with the first games, playing them all in the release order. The first games of both are now some of my absolute favorite games of all time, and I dig both series' original trilogies a lot. Way more than their latest installments, in fact.

>he thinks he's a gamer

>keep

That was my first post. If quite a few people are telling you the same thing, catch on user.

Just go back to whatever modern TPS you liked before this thread then, RE is not for you.

just emulate/play the main games in release order
skip the portable spinoffs but not the revelations games, gaiden is fucking trash, ORC and umbrella chronicles are broken shit messes, the outbreaks are really good but also really clunky, even if you finaggle it and get the online working on emulators, CVX is technically a main game, it's best to ignore the gun survivor and chronicles games

I probably missed a few but that's really all you need

>the older resident evils are not fun to play nowadays.

absolute pleb opinion

Because it isn't a remaster.

>implying all of Sup Forums isnt full of shit opinions

>not part of canon
user, there's a book written by alyssa in RE7

and the canon status of RE games is, if it's made inhouse, it's canon unless stated otherwise

to further get into this, I'd recommend doing this:
RE1 deadly silence for DS
RE2 gamecube emulated unless you find a PC version download
RE3, same as above
CVX, probably emulate the gamecube version for best results
RE4, 5, 6, REv1 and 2, and 7 are on everything anyway

0 if you REALLY want to see rebecca some more

the rest of the games are practically exclusives to their consoles

REmake, like the name sort of gives away, is a remake. not a remaster.

This. I only played Silent Hill 1 in 2014 and now SH3 is one of my favorite games of all time. Faggots are spoiled and think classic fags are trying to apeal to the “git gud” argument as if tank controls are hard. No, they were the casual normalfag horror games of the 90’s, classicfags aren’t calling these games “hard” they are calling you lesser than a 1990’s normalfag.

Just pick any RE that looks interesting. The plot in RE is thread bare anyway so playing the games in order isn't that necessary in my opinion. Plus RE suprisingly only has a few outright bad games, and these games are never talked about anyway so it's incredibly unlikely you'll start with one of them.

However I'm going to recommend some games to avoid for a first time player. Out of the well known RE games, the worst ones to start with would be:
RE6 - becuase it's a giant cluster fuck, and the closest to an outright bad game as the mainline got. However it's got a really fucking good combat system, and playing mercenaries, and Chris's campaign with a friend can be legit fun. Too bad that only comes to like 25% of the the entire game.

RE7 - I find the game pretty boring overall. It has the worst gameplay out of all the mainline RE games, and since it's a new take on the series it's hard to recommend it as an RE game until more games in this style come out. I'd say RE7 is closer to a more action oriented Alien Isolation than RE at this point in time. So saying you want to play RE, then starting with 7 doesn't make much sense to me.

RE Code Veronica - I personally rate this as the worst classic RE. Mainly because it feels like the least thought out game, as there are parts in the game that can very easily force a restart because you've cornered yourself into an unwinnable situation through very little fault of your own. The game is still incredibly fun, Alfred is so batshit crazy and a cartoon villain that I love him, but I would avoid this game as a starting point.

RE0 - suffers from similar problems as RE:CV, just rather than a reset, you have to backtrack a shit load. Plus it's one of the hardest classic RE's.

So any other RE game is perfect for newcomers imo. Just pick one that looks interesting

Play 4 and then quit the series because the rest are shit.

>you need hacks
fucking what? have you even tried playing them online on the private server? it's as simple as downloading an emulator, an iso and a plugin, that's it
>but muh story
last I checked most people play RE for the gameplay, and REO is one of the best out there in that aspect

and a save file*
I forgot to mention that

REmake>4>2>1>Zero>Rev2>3>7>CV>>Rev>>>>

What a fucking shit opinion.

>REmake, 2 and 4 that high
Sup Forumscore out of 10

Not him but REmake is by far the best game the series has ever had.

REmake, RE4 or RE7.

Fuck off. RE4 is one of the best games of all time.

t. Sup Forumscore
REmake isn't a good game (hint: gameplay) and RE4 is overrated and a bad RE game

Oh god you are that faggot who also thinks RE2 and CV are terrible games too aren’t you?

REmake (Steam)- 2,3 (SourceNext ports, not on Steam but easily found), Code Veronica (Emulate), Zero, 4,5, Revelations, 6 Revelations 2, 7 (all on Steam)

>what is a gentle joke

Let me guess, your favorites are 1 because of the washed out colors and 6.

they are terrible games. prove me wrong, oh wait, you can't

Don't. Play a real game instead like Pump It Up.

you can't just recommend sourcenext ports to someone who's starting resident evil man
they're nothing but moonrunes and I don't think there's any translation patch for them

Please, tell me about re4 on ps4. I saw somewhere mentioned it contaons some bug. This bug is not game breaking, bot for some people it is a deal breaking. Is this bug crusial? How does it affect gameplay? Does ps3 version of re4 contain this bug?

>imagine being this bad of a contrarian
user, i think it's time to enjoy things or you'll become a sour cunt.

>Oma Maske zahnlos
Wie geht es dir Hans?

>REmake has shit gameplay
Holy shit, way to immediately make anything you say worthless.

Nobody and I mean nobody with a semblance of a brain is going to listen to your absolutely worthless drivel.

Oh, I didn´t know that. I thought they were patched a while ago. Disregard those then..just emulate 2 and 3.
Super. Und selbst so?

I do enjoy good games. REmake isn't. RE4 is alright but nowhere as good as people make it out to be

Nice bait.

Name some games you like?

>running around empty hallways with barely any enemies until the lab is considered 'good gameplay'
the absolute state of nu-Sup Forums

Battlefield 3, RE6, GTA4, LoZ SS, PUBG, TTYD

GTA4 is an actually good game unlike REmake

>Playing on very easy
Jesus man

>he played on easy
hahahahaha

>implying
I played on Normal since that was the highest difficulty available. I didn't die once due to how much the game showers you with defense items, herbs and first aid sprays. it's a baby's first RE when compared to the other games

>played on normal
Well no shit it was easy, normal isn't hard at all. Real survivor is the hardest challenge in classic RE, and even Hard is a world of difference from normal.

Resident Evil 1996

>REmake shills are out in full force

>Sup Forums hates on REmake now

I hate this board.

Please, answer my question. What is the bug? I saw it mentioned on this board several times.

>having to shill for a good game

Youre stupid, arent you?

>Real Survivor is the hardest
Nicholai with all survivors/kills, Tofu, Outbreak File2 Horror Mode on VH and Showdown3 Knife Only on VH would like to have a word with you
also playing on Hard or Real Survivor doesn't increase the monster count, it's still easy

RE7 has a lot in common with the original RE trilogy, especially the first and third ones, but it's the first that's in a first person perspective all the time. The others I guess you could compare it to control wise is Resident Evil Dead Aim and Resident Evil Survivor.
If you want to experience original RE you could always play the original PS1 games or Resident Evil Remake which you can get on PC.

>counting minigames
>counting outbreak

I see more defending REmake than hating on it. Only a select few hates it.

Start with Re: dead aim, you won't regret it!

It's inferior in every way besides maybe graphics and music to RE1:DC

That one's dripping with atmosphere, but you can tell already how janky the gameplay would be like with it being made by Drakengard 1's studio.
