A lot of amazing, innovative, and ambitious titles came out that year, but there is something to be said abut polishing a concept to perfection. I can safely say that Odyssey has the most mechanically satisfying movement of any 3D action game. That alone is worth accolades, but the fact that the rest of the game is so charming and fun to explore makes it my GOTY

Splatoon 2 user. The ink mechanic is so different and insanely useful along with gyro aiming.
Though the multiplayer cancer the game is trying to work around is starting to coming back.
AFK, spawn campers, squidbagging are really putting a toll on the game.
Ironically it's lack of on system voice chat is acting like a very thick filter so I don't have to listen to the constant squeakers, fur fag yiffing, and raging fan boys.
As long as S+ fags stay out of Turf war it's 10/10 to me
Although not all games can be for all players, Nintendo shows us that there is something to have fun with for everyone. It makes me feel like this is a Mario game that come right from the heart of what Mario games should be. Even with the Hat trick, I have gone back to Super Mario 64 and found myself attempting to Hat trick because they made it feel so natural and rewarding. I do like how we can talk about the mechanics, because there is a lot of depth to it all.
Although you might not like everything about it, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I can only consider a game good if it's technically sound, decently challenging, and not bloated on filler. That means it can't lock content behind DLC paywalls, it shouldn't be casual, and it shouldn't run at 30 FPS.
I think BOTW takes it for me as traveling from place to place never feels boring to me as I could be taking a horse (like a fucking loser), drinking potions, a motorcycle, launching my self with Stasis, gliding and ect. Puts a fun spin on things

The game is something i managed to get my hands on. I had to spent many hours going into overtime at work to make sure i could preorder Super Mario Odyssey. I am really happy I made the extra effort to get the game, as it was worth every extra shift.

The controls have always been the best part about playing Mario games.That's what really sets them apart from other platformers.

I hated the controls in Sunshine and the Galaxy games were merely passable.
Odyssey is the first time (unless you count BUILDING SPEED FOR 12 HOURS type of shit in 64) that Mario's movement mechanics have been technically complex rather than just varied and fun.
Watching people make The Impossible Jump in NDC or doing high wall scaling shortcuts is something I've never really seen done in other Mario games.
I guess if you don't like stylish action games it might, but that would signify terrible taste in vidya

Not that guy but I burned out on in about 3 weeks too, but picked it up this week to see the new ranked mode, new music and new modes and it really feels a lot better.
