It's not bad, just generic and does not really capture the feeling the original yume nikki had.
They turned it into a generic linear indie horror game when the original was just a strange exploration game.

the model for madotsuki looks like a stock asset, it's awful. they also tried to make her footprints "scarier"? no idea why, her little booties make squeaky noises before which was comfy as fuck.

they went all in on the spooky edgy shit when that was more like a seasoning sprinkled throughout comfy but eerily isolating locations

Not sure if they're as well known and popular, but Misao, The Witch's House, and possibly Ao Oni since they even referenced it in this new Yume Nikki game. That minigame wasn't half bad, to be honest.

Ao Oni's creepiness mostly came from how jarringly detailed its face was compared to the rpgmaker graphics

Yeah, it'd work best if it had a different graphical style I think. I've always enjoyed the unease that out of place things like that could inspire.

Granted I only used the bike whenever I could, I still enjoyed having a collection of cute hats and heads.

They're also mostly situational.
You can't go around with the knife anymore, stabbing everything to death but can only attack like two or three NPCs in the entire game.

I would like to see "Off" remade, but the way they handled this game would make me just as disappointed as dream diary did.
