Post some neat vidya music featuring odd time signatures.

who cares about this nerdy shit?

>no fucking idea

This is posted in every thread like this and I'm not sure if it counts as odd time signature, or just weird tempo change.

I would argue that Don't Be Afraid is is 10/8 rather than 5/4. Mostly from the tempo and the constant triple/triple/duple/duple division of the measure. It's kind of like when you play pieces that are in 8/8 rather than 4/4.

I don't even know the difference of 8/8 and 4/4.

To a listener, there isn't one.

youtu.be/TVyBV_HC8eg
5/4 I believe

Is phrasing or chord progressions not usually enough of a difference?

Here's a short example

There is a difference that is the result of emphasis placed on different notes in the measure. This is shown in the posted example.

I remember in a thread like this ages ago someone posted a song that had a signature change in the middle of the song to something completely absurd like 247/12 but fuck me if I can remember it

Based on this example alone this seems like 8/8 to me.

Oh, that actually makes a lot of sense. Thanks, user!

It is, but it also has some neat polyrhythms going with the toms.

>took AP music theory
>couldn't tell you the time signature of any song without looking it up first or wildly guessing
That's probably why I got 3 on the finals.

western music theory is a load of shite

That's just basic 8/8, nothing interesting.

Was just about to say this. It sounds a lot like jazz, rhythmically. Neat little thing.

No problem!

I believe it changes signatures several times throughout the song. The polyrhythms make it hard to identify though.

Another 11/8. Or 5/8+6/8 whatever.
Dislike XIII all you want, some of the music was fucking A+.

What alternatives can you vouch for? I know that in the Balkans you see shit like 25/16 crop up but not sure if the whole x/y time signature thing is part of what you mean by 'Western music theory'

>tfw too dumb to participate

>Nah man, music doesn't need theory behind it brah, you just gotta feel it. Here, check out my Youtube that has recordings of me with my guitar playing something that makes no musical sense.

Obvious ones in case they haven't been posted yet.
>fucking 29/16 masked man

As appose to what? Also music theory is always supposed to be descriptive, not prescriptive. It's not like people just woke up one day and decided music had to be composed a certain way.

Fuck, didn't mean to quote another post.

I have no clue, been over a decade since piano lessons but after dozens of songs I think this might not have the average time signature.
youtube.com/watch?v=uks26L3B7_o

Sounds like 5/8 to me.

What is this one?

its 29/16 or some shit bro, count it out

I know nothing about music theory. Is Planescape music weird like the rest of the game?

I think this one is 5/4

>mfw started learning violin
Man I like it, but I feel like a complete retard. It doesn't help that I have no music theory knowledge

Another theoryscrub here. Drakengard has all sorts of odd things going on & this one seems to have some polyrhythms maybe but really I have no idea so I'll just post it & see i someone tells me it's actually just plain old 4/4 with some silly interruptions
youtube.com/watch?v=1SgvPqL2dSs

Norfair is almost a straight waltz, but each phrase gets an extra beat, so 13/8? Maybe? Then the third section changes signature to 3/4.
youtu.be/XGgvHDnTg84

Zero Mission adds another beat, so 14/8?
youtu.be/-oY6TvKdlWQ

Agreed.
I was waiting for someone to post evergrace... dude i dont fucking know. The beginning is like some 15/8 fuckery. But later it opens up to 8/8?

youtube.com/watch?v=qxAKSyMPNZk

One of my favorites. 13/8 time signature.

Sounds like plain old 4/4 with some silly interruptions to me, by the time you get past the beginning part with all that empty noise.

It's literally a 4/4. Listen to the bassline, man.

not super weird (5/4) but i like this one a lot

youtube.com/watch?v=6RlSgnpLbro
Pretty much just a simple 6/8, but I like it a lot, and it's always the first thing I think of when I think of vidya music outside of 4/4.

I also thought of this even though I don't really play RPGs:
youtube.com/watch?v=wdIyxSVtPek

Is there a playlist of songs that break 4/4 like this? It'd be interesting to listen to.

I cant find the bassline ahhhhh

it has dueling tempos

Every other song in Spelunky has 5/4 time. An amazing soundtrack.

fucking masked man

youtube.com/watch?v=h_t9FN8TSDk
Just a simple 5/4 but I love this song

youtu.be/1NmGBbzHDjc

do a lot of JRPGs use 5/4 for battle themes?

Thread's over

youtube.com/watch?v=sC0cvwnG0Ik

This one is cheating. It's just random 16th notes. You can put a normal 4/4 beat to this and it'd work just fine, but it's impossible to discern any measures from this mess.

Am I retarded or is this an actual row?
