Competitive scene.

Melee and

autism

Never understand why people get so competitive over a party game

It's just a rule set supported by the game itself. Why else would Smash have an item switch?

Sakurai lack of understanding of what people actually want.
>hurr durr smash course

I mean if they want a hardcore fighter smash isn't the game

It's simple.

When Sakurai left HAL

Melee was accidentally competitively balanced with an i-frame glitch and the rest is shitstory

He is right you know.

when they put in tripping and ruined target test

When people decided to take a game about Nntendo characters beating each other up seriously.

There's barely any games that play like Smash so one has to work with what they have.

Project M

>mates hate it when it's my turn to customize the next match because i turn on items and pick a non comp map

space invaders and pokeballs set to high all day everyday faggots

Because 90s caricatures and recolor ninjas are so much more serious.

Honestly, all fighting games are pretty fucking ridiculous, I don't know why people act like they're SRS BUSINESS.

More serious than a fox, a bird, a dinosaur and an ambiguous pink puffball I'd say.

I think right after melee, when they realized that smash bros made marth and roy popular and that they could use the game as free advertisement for other franchises. Brawl wasn't too bad about this, and added characters that the roster needed. Smash 4 on the other hand made several questionable decisions with its roster. All the kid icarus and fire emblem character was obviously meant to advertise those games along with the wooly world level.

>tfw comp players only tolerate playing melee cause It's the most """competitive"""

>my silly games are more mature than yours

Smash 64 had Jigglypuff to promote the anime was going to have Meowth for the same reason. It's always been a promotion thing.

Yes. Keep playing your Super Smack 'Em Bros with your faulty controllers and cartoon animals in the corner you smelly lardbucket, actual chads will be playing a plethora of the latest real fighting games and getting laid lmfao

You mean Galaga.

Hackurai

No, that's the guy who smashes watermelons.

>space invaders
Right, they hate you because of tourenyfaggotry, not because you turn on the shittiest most obnoxious items in the game. You probably choose some bullshit like Mario Maker or Orbital Gate Assault too.

Embarrassing, but not as much as this
youtube.com/watch?v=KhsOW-_TwfU

It all started with Marth and Roy.

Funny, they were almost going to be cut out of the western version of Melee.

Mario Maker is fun tho. Fuck Orbital Gate

If only. Fire Emblem has no place in a Nintendo celebration game.

No one is saying that. Every fighting game character to ever exist is ridiculous.

It's a NES OG franchise. So suck it up bitch.

Removing ledge hogging

The exact second brawl came out and undid everything melee was trying to do

Non sequitor.

Suck my dick, Ken-sama.

What kids needed to be happy then
VS
What kids need to be happy now

Compare the complex simplicity of the original to the simplistic density of today's abominations (sm4sh and brawl).

>A game about Nintendo characters fighting each other with whacky moves and items presents itself as a casual, fun game
How horrible. What were they thinking with Brawl?

Couldn't just stick with the N64, had to make new consoles, people got older, the world fell apart.

Brawl has the better more colorful menu design

Not even dignifying those responses with (You)s

Not even the creators want Smash to be the super-serious esport you envision when you posted those menus. It's the game you play with your buddies alongside Mario Kart and Mario Party and shit when you're all chilling and dicking around at their place. Fuck off

Why include item and match settings right on the character select screen?
Why have stages like Battlefield and Final Destination?
Why even bother to do balance patches for Smash 4 (and even Melee to a degree with the PAL release)?

Melee was goofy enough. Aside from that the sound design was better (better sound effects mostly) and brawl's menu design is atrocious bland trash whereas melee's is sharp with a nice dark/light color contrast. see

>For convenience/cohesion
>For matches focused on items instead of stage gimmicks
>Because people demanded them after the scene got to where it was
The fact that Smash 4 is still an unbalanced mess and they stopped supporting it almost as soon as the final DLC hit should tell you the devs don't actually care how balanced the games are

Never understand why people are bothered by people playing it competitively

>HOLD ON, FRIENDS WHO ARE SITTING ON MY COUCH AT MY HOUSE. WE NEED TO PAUSE THIS GAME AND TUNE INTO TWITCH.TV TO WATCH AUTISTIC MANCHILDREN PLAYING THIS GAME COMPETITIVELY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OHHHHHHHHH MY FUUUUUCKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING GODDDDDDDDD THIS IS RUINING MY LIFE!!!!! OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!!!!!!

just play the fucking game how you want to lil bitch

64 and Melee (Japanese) had the best official art

look at this shit

HAL left development

Bloat

The right reminds me of Chaotix

Excessive focus on novelty content/bloat

i could totally stomach the absence of Stage Builder/Smash Tour/Trophies/Masterpieces/HomeRun/Custom Moves if we got modes and design built around core game play like crew battles, randomizing characters each KO, actually good stage design, actually good online, way more cosmetic options like unlockable taunts/costumes/colors

Brawl and forward. Hopefully the Switch game isn't a port and will break the cycle.

Sakurai said Melee being competitive was intentionally and glad people are treating Melee that way like Smash 4 is being the "middle ground".

I like the Brawl menu desu. The Smash 4 one is completely fucked up though.

Visuals were nice, but the actual design and layout was hot trash

>Fire Emblem has no place in a Nintendo celebration game.
Gunpei Yokoi gave life to the series you Gen Z shit

smash found its "niche" and successful formula
get ready for brawl 3

Everything about the brawl menu is fucking shit. You can possibly prefer it to the melee menu.

He also gave life to Virtual Boy. Keep generic shonen shit away from timeless icons.

>He also gave life to Virtual Boy.
he also gave life to Metroid, KI, and Wario

And only one of those was good.

tell me what franchise you like

But I'm outside the target audience of that niche :-(

Why can't we have a new Smash game that's not designed to be anti-competitive? Casuls loved 64 and Melee too.

That doesn't make sense, you retard; Sakurai doesn't cater to the competitive scene.

Sakurai becoming a giant crybaby faggot when he found out people played the first two games in a way he didn't personally think of or enjoy, and proceeding to alter the next games in a way that fixed broken shit but also shit that wasn't broken

see

Sakurai flip-flops like an asshole all the fucking time

and each time he does, he said the same thing.

>"Melee is the sharpest Smash. Will there ever be another Smash directed to blahblah to video games?"
>*flip-flops*
>"You want Smash "fighting games"? Melee is for you. etc etc."
>*flip-flops*
>"the one that's the most competitive and blahblah is Melee"
honestly he's more busy telling people to go play other fighting games and Melee than shitting on competitive players

He never said that, he only noticed that it was the sharpest for the control(fast and furious), but he had zero intention for any sort of competitive scene.

No, it was Sakurai's reaction to the competitive scene that killed the series. He could have ignored it but he went out of his way to try and remove all skill from the game whatsoever, which is how we ended up with tripping and jumps being unaffected by momentum (which is still shit in Smash 4).

>He never said that,
[citation needed]
>but he had zero intention for any sort of competitive scene.
you fags just LOVE twisting his words, just to be right
fucking stupid

OP didn't generalize what aspect of Smash, but anyone defending the competitive scene of Smash are incest bred retards. Sup Forums use to be full of mocking and making fun of it, but recent years of invasions by reddit, neogaf, tumblr, and the inclusion of Sup Forums, idiots have been conditioned to believe competitive gamers, youtubers, anyone who makes a living playing games are to be the holy fucking grail.

End yourself if you think the competitive scene to any game is important.

Sakurai literally turned into a nigger.

Melee is good but swamped down by its absolute shit competitive community
Brawl is shit for tripping, removing momentum, and generally being slow as shit, also Meta Knight
Smash 4 is shit for basically no worthwhile single player, still not having momentum, still being slow, and its competitive scene also being obnoxious

64 is the true patrician pick

I wish there was a smash clone that played loser to it. Its a raw ass game but I love it.

Because of a few bugs and exploits

When will you fags realize it's the community that outlives the game. The game is a means to the community, and the community grows due to worldwide communication.

Sup Forums are nothing but the poor, lonely, anti social, autists,

>tfw put an obscene number of hours into the original Smash Bros and then never touched the series again because too autistic to play it without a N64 controller.

>thought this was just some simple edit
>it ended up being real
What the fuck

Even 7 year old me couldn't get that much mileage out of the first smash bros with that lack of variety.

Brawl had more of them though.

Asians evidently age like milk

The only reason I got so much time out of it was because it was one of the first, if not the first, game that was accessible to all of my friends. Whereas formerly we'd either play other games in smaller groups, or just watch someone play at game, SSB allowed us to trade off in 4s with a game that even the tards (and we were heavy on them) could play.

Can I ask a question to everyone who thinks Melee has a shitty community?
Have you ever been to a local? Do you ever use Anther's Smashladder? Or, do you just hang on Sup Forums and get your impressions of things that way?

It lost it's vision as a simple platformer/fighter hybrid and is more preoccupied with gimmicks and bloat instead of good and focused gameplay.

Why do Smash 4 characters not feel like Smash characters at all?
I can't really explain it well, but it feels like most characters in Smash 4 have such non-Smash movesets and playstyles. It's like how out of place Snake felt in Brawl. That's how most Smash 4 characters play.
The purest roster was the original SSB64 one. Everyone were pretty similar and there wasn't really any gimmicky character. Maybe Samus, but she was still pretty normal.
I guess it can be interesting, but I really don't enjoy playing Smash 4 because of it.

Better technology = more chances to create new types of movesets.

I think it's part in thanks to the engine and how stripped down (mechanically) the gameplay has become since Melee

As far as i know, melee was the most sold game cube game and most people who play games on earth have played it.
Why did it think that casual could not play it? It's still the same concept i don't think any change he made, actually made it easier for people that absolutely don't know how to play.

Have you ever seen how people play when they first touch the game? They can't recover, do basic attacks ect... None of the change made the first contact more accessible.

>As far as i know, melee was the most sold game cube game and most people who play games on earth have played it.
that's correct, which strenghten Sakurai's argument on competitive players not being able to thrive without the casuals.

Melee had gimmicky shit too, but there was still a somewhat universal moveset among characters.
It's radically different from characters like Bayonetta, or Corrin or Duck Hunt.

Right now It feels like the roster is too large for its own good if they implemented a tag team 3 on 3 mode it would justify its size. Less FE characters would help too as well as less Pokemon. Two characters per franchise would be perfect. It also gives you an incentive to try all fighters before you get sick midway through, I swear, All-Stars used to be fun but now it feels like a chore. Christ.

Don't forget Ryu, I don't know why he's given such a pass when he's arguably the most special snowflake of the rostet

Ryu would be such a perfect inclusion, but they went too far with his Street Fighter styled moves.
I think as far as Smash 4 goes, the purest character is Falcon or Marth.
