Not really, to me it felt like it ended as soon as the story was getting good. There's a few bullshit parts but not terribly bad.

The story never gets good though. It's predictable all the way through.

It's really nothing like old FF games. It's more like a standard Western open world game. You have your fetch quests, which pretty much boils down to following !'s around the map. If you get tired of those, you can proceed with the main quest. The map has a good deal of variety, and the story is decent enough up until half way through. Then everything goes down hill, but all in all it was a worthwhile journey
