actually better than HL1 and miles better than the shit remake Valve did.
Overall good, a lot of homage to the original though the crossbow scope isn't that fluid and surface tension was gutted, also still no xen.
Isn't this still incomplete? I wanted to play it since it's free but now I'm not so sure.
For me, the absolute best thing about the mod is how well it nails the 90's office space feel. Very comfy and nostalgic.
A shame the 90's military tone didn't quite carry over.
It's not free anymore, though you can still download the original free 2012 beta (everything up to Xen) but it's piss poor compared to the Steam version (which somehow still doesn't have Xen).
Wouldn't really bother with the original mod anymore though, even for free.
Pretty decent, very pretty. Carries HL2's underwhelming combat and some of the areas are less fun than in the original but the level of detail put into the environments and such is amazing.
>surface tension was gutted
they've expanded it since the intial release, its pretty good now, includes the bits that were missing and even adds extra
What about On a Rail, did they fix that one too or is it still drastically gutted?
it's better, the gameplay is remarkable.
t. finished hl1 5 times on whatever was the hardest, it's been a while
It's alright, but it's no Hunt Down the Freeman
>actually better than HL1
please kill yourself
I bought in a sale some months ago and I'm itching to play it but I really want to wait for XEN. Never liked Goldsource/Q1 gunplay. Doom1/2 and HL2 are my favorites.
its garbage, avoid it. they fucked up the level design and gameplay so every encounter is like half life 1 but faster paced, except they used hl2s slower movement and sprinting (except you can only sprint foward and cant shoot while sprinting.) dont waste 20 dollars on it and just get hl1
>still no xen
Lmao at people who actually payed for this shit. They spent 10 years developing fucking xen and still havent done it.
really pretty, worse gameplay and still not finished.
on a rail was gutted, however one of the devs released the full cut version as a workshop mod.
>Never liked Goldsource/Q1 gunplay.
Subhuman.
>he doesn't know
steamcommunity.com
omitting On a Rail can only be considered an improvement
probably cause devs are trying to get GMan voice acting and to make xen actually good
kys
There are moments where music kicks in for huge setpieces and it is probably some of the most hype shit I've played in a videogame in recent memory.
It takes the most notorious moments of HL1 and just throws them away instead of trying to fix them (in particular, On A Rail and Surface Tension have, like, 1/3 to 1/2 cut out, although there are fan mods that sort of restore the missing maps). It also adds some gimmicky moments like the flairs episode in the beginning, some pushing bottles in water and plugging the electricity puzzles as per HL2, nothing all that serious or prominent. Also has a badass bossfight of sorts at the Questionable Ethics.
It's okay, but if you value novelty in games, well, it has somewhat less gameplay diversity than the original had, since the original had some seriously rough around the edges moments, that required some adaptation. And this game just smoothes them out without introducing anything else of note.
>Questionable Ethics lobby
I’m getting goosebumps from Hard mode. That was so fun
A fantastic remake of the original. If you enjoy Half-Life even a little bit, you should definitely get this.
Black Mes-ah
Trying to think of a way to fix on a rail and all I can think of forklifts. Forklifts are cool. Tactical Intervention had some fun forklifts.
Are you talking about the old mod or the paid version? You should really specify.
>And this game just smoothes them out without introducing anything else of note.
Other than a few really good HECU firefights, that is.
Surprised they were able to convince valve to let them actually sell the mod on Steam.
The old mod. I'll check out the paid version once Xen gets released.
Half-Life: Source isn't a remake. It is a port.
Gabe likes paid mods and wants to get those Half-Life fanboys off his case.
Did they fix the stuttering that was mostly caused by cones having too many polygons?
>when you're in that elevator and "We've got Hostiles!" starts playing as you
so fucking hype
I know Steam has no quality control now but I'm surprised that nobody at Valve even bothered to stop and look at the quality of the game.
>still no Xen
They did apparently. They were sent a build. steamcommunity.com
>what is Hunt Down the Freeman
Black Mesa is masterpiece compared to this
just fucking play the original
I'm pretty sure valve realizes they've milked enough sheckles out of HL1. I mean they sell it for like a dollar on the seasonal sales.
it's half life 1 with half life 2's movement/gameplay, which is worse than hl1s
You can play every Half-Life campaign in Sven Coop which is free now.
Why not, they've pretty much abandoned the IP, if they can profit from someone else's work who cares if it's shit
XEN
NEVER
EVER
And HL1 is simply Quake with forced alwaysrun and shoddily patched in (in comparison with HeXen2) crouch.
The game has problems that weren't in the original namely the ai which can see you from pretty far away and it also has auto aim which forces you to cheese the game
ok
It is balanced out by having Half-Life 2's superior gunplay and AI.
It was always trash. Quake gunplay only got decent until 3, which is why Doom is objectively a much better game.
How many more years till Half Life 1/2 is legally considered "vaporware"? We must be getting close. lel
>Half-Life 2's superior gunplay and AI
weren't valve bitches about it like 10 years ago
>that pic
>can actually hear the scientist screams through it
I am... impressed.
It's not very Zen
Forget About Freeman is pure kino.
youtu.be
He's right tho. Gunplay was floaty and spongy as fuck.
I WANT A BLACK MESA FREEMAN'S MIND
They asked the devs to rename the mod. The only problem they had with it was the "Source" at the end.
Much better, but needed more voice actors at least from when I played both for diversity and quality. There were like 3 voice actors and 2 of them sounded like 16 year olds.

DAILY REMINDER
"Black Mesa" is a better title anyway. The "Source" subtitle makes me think of G-Mod before it reminds me of Day of Defeat: Source and Counter-Strike: Source.
>Vaporware
The term means something in production but never released (HL3)
The term you are looking for is Abandonware, Freeware or open licence.
You're thinking of the old voiceacting. This has been replaced:

With this:

Black Mesa redoes some of the level dozen to make it more modern so the game feels a lot like a mix of the old and the new, but it isn't done well. Some of the redone level design really fucks up the old enemy encounters, like say a firefight with some mercenaries in the canyon drags in Black Mesa vs the original since the area is a lot bigger now vs the original HL1 where everything is smaller and you can end the fight faster since you are closer to the enemies
SHIT TASTE
you mean black messsah
There is already a half life source, anyway. It was just a lazy asset swap and it didn't support any mods.
What, I think, happens at Valve is that pretty much every Valve employee just wants to remain at Valve, by whatever means possible, and those whatever means possible include showing other Valve employees that some Hard Work Of Whatever Kind is being produced by said Valve Employee. It's probably, basically, one giant atnhill, where everyone is chasing some random shinies noone has ever asked one about, in order to show the other people, how fucking busy he is and how valuable his input is in relation to company's goal (what they might be, noone has a clue, or more like that every employee imagines what those goals might be in his own, individual way, that doesn't mesh with what others have imagined in any way at all). It's completely uncoordinated and unmanaged. The only things that get done are done through some key people continuing to drone the very same thing they were droning for numerous years prior to that, purely by inertia. And all the random shits are doing just whatever would make them seem important enough in order to retain their current position, and to keep burning money on just sitting on a chair with a serious facial expression.
From what I've got from employee's handbook, I got the impression, that the core thing about Valve is that it's self-managed, meaning, there is no dedicated managing staff. Basically, a cooperation of free-thinking individuals, an attempt at meritocratic Galt's Gulch, with pretty much unlimited external funding (Steam cuts from all the non-Valve games sold there).
And I kind of get an impression, that it started to develop cancer quite some a time ago, and, by now, is much less "self-managed" than "completely unmanaged".
It doesn't have the Xen levels yet, but they are being actively worked on
It does a lot of things I like better than in the original. It also does some things worse. I found myself enjoying it way more than Half Life 2 though if that counts for anything.
I liked the Black Mesa: Source title cause it gave it an official feel, like this was the Half Life: Source people expected, but I get why it was removed.
>actually better than HL1
You don't, need to, use so many, fucking, commas, faggot
Look who's one to talk.
So is it possible to pirate the original Half Life or is Steam going to cuck me out of it?
Was HL3 ever really in production stage?
Yup, and beyond EP3. pcgamer.com
Yes, find the WON version.
