Games are better when they're made for prof--
for prof? for professors?
it
This bugged me a lot, but I still enjoyed Kero.
Cave Story was my first 'indie' game. Then La Mulana. Then Iji
I still don't think I've played any that tops those three
Cave Story is a work of love.
I really like the shooting and aiming of Kero Blaster. That game is unique in important yet subtle ways. I might just replay it...
Pretty much any game tops Iji.
Games are worse when they are sold digitally
there are no games better than cave story
Not even trying to troll or being an edgy anarchist, but capitalism has really fucked game design.
>early access to sell incomplete games
>devs trying to put as little content in as possible and make the prices as high as possible
>everything is formulaic and nothing experimental is made these days, too risky when you need to get $$$
How do we fix it? I know people have to get their money, but fucking hell.
If you don't like formulaic games or anti-consumer practices then don't buy into them. That's how capitalism works
Stop paying for digital distribution.
Pirate.
We can't, you can't force creativity into people, games are this way because "gamers" only buy them to play them and be able to brag about it, they don't know how to have fun with games, most just go through them and go for the next one, they never try to experiment with the games, they don't understand what is the point of playing a game.
Untrue cynicism. Play more games. Read more indie blogs. Put some actual effort into finding developers and projects because you clearly don't look beyond the Steam front page if you genuinely believe what you've written is any worse now than when you were born.
There's a thriving indie game market with many high quality releases. Last year in particular was excellent. Stop buying AAA trash and Sup Forums fotm indie games.
Stop paying for both else you are just hypocrite consolefags.
>Can't get the good ending unless you avoid to speak to one of the major character when he's dying
What the fuck was that nip thinking?
said nobody ever
But Kero Blaster was better than Cave Story and that costs like $15.
profanity?
I'm convinced Kero Blaster sold like shit because the Zangyou/Secret Omake levels weren't present at release. The normal mode is just too short on its own.
>Good devs sells masterpieces like bayonetta 1 and 2, alien isolation or dying light
>Retard' keep buyin crap instead
Here's the problem, peoples are fucking stupids. Thanks famalam
>Zangyou
Surprisingly a great expansion with a cuter story.
>Secret Omake levels
not that important desu
It sold like shit because nobody gives a shit about the style of game anymore. Cave Story came out at a good time and achieved meme status so even people who never play indies/doujins will check it out and praise it like it's the best thing.
Zangyou mode did add a lot to the game.
Still, Kero Blaster deserves much more love. The indie scene kinda sucks.
profundity
Bayonetta 1 is not a masterpiece, it's watered down with God of War inspired crap like bad platforming, QTEs, and awful minigames. Now God Hand is a masterpiece.
>capitalism
I don't think games would be any better off being produced by the state under fascism or communism
I love Curly
Unchecked capitalism has absolutely fucked a lot of things. Attempting (this is an important distinction) to optimize for money brings a lot of side effects.
If you love her so much why aren't you drawing her?
This is now an Amaya thread.
Hello Curlyfriend
>cave story won't get a sequel because of jewcalis
>kero balster won't get a sequel because it sold like shit
>ame will never actually get to be in a game
suffering
It hurts just a little bit
Reminder that Kero Blaster was a two-person project and Kiyoko Kawanaka deserves credit.
>Ms. Kawanaka, who I met at a business incubator in Kyoto, was skilled with level design and production, so I was able to leave the level design and production in Kero Blaster up to her. When I worked alone, I would waste a day on a bug that I couldn't figure out that by the evening, I would feel depressed about the current condition of the game. But by giving a part of the game to another person, I was able to focus on smaller parts while the stages in the game were steadily being created. This way, I didn't really have to worry about losing motivation.
Yeah, she deserves credit and hatred for that fucking penguin cart in the last level of Zangyou mode, god fucking damn I died so many times trying to use that thing during my 2-heart run
cause I have zero artistic talent and am not willing to learn so I scour the internet looking for pictures of her and then I complain constantly when there is not enough lewds.
She is the best
Commission it.
The good games especially in the indie scene are out there. The problem is they dont get enough advertising/marketing and they get drowned in an ocean of shit indie games
>>everything is formulaic and nothing experimental is made these days, too risky when you need to get $$$
True for AAA games but wrong for indies.
Yup. You wish there was another one-man-project side-scrolling action game with great pixel art, a nice story, and neat characters? Iconoclasts came out two months ago!
-ligates
>Pretty much any game tops Iji.
I disagree with your opinion, but I won't call you a faggot.
>how do we fix this?
its too late. you could have prevented this.
it sucks
basic universal income so people don't feel extremely pressured into making money just so they dont have to become a wageslave
>that artstyle
>but capitalism has really fucked game design.
So I guess we implement a system wherein all game studios are seized by the government and forced to make propaganda games.
That's better than loot boxes.
Also remember, the only reason they do this shady money grubbing shit is because people will give them money. If lootboxes didn't make money they wouldn't exist.
Despite being gay I kind of had a crush on Curly.
I still have no idea what version to play.
the original
Can't go wrong with the free version.
Go to the website and download the original freeware version. No later version of the game actually adds anything useful or interesting. It's all downhill.
hey, the music remixes and the Wind fortress aren't that bad
Capitalism is just the system through which normans once again destroyed a nice hobby. There is a reason why rather difficult to access videogames are usually not plagued by DLC/half-baked content. But its not like there is an alternative, dont kid yourself, good content never gets produced just out of passion, everybody wants to get paid for his work.
>waah normies runing my video games
atari, nintendo, all the early pc companies were profit driven assholes just like video game companies today. Stop acting like it's any different now you fucking nerd
>actual commies itt
Cave Story+ is objectively the best version
a lot of anons disagree user
you're about to get a lot of (you)
Freeware version played on NXEngine (optional: via Retroarch).
every indie game is pretty much cave story.
???
In an ideal world
in reality however indie games are trash
>optional: via Retroarch
Why?
Three things are happening here:
1) A lot of the masterpiece games from the 90's and 00's were labors of love, made by people who worked long hours for shit pay to make they games they wanted to.
2) Things like programming and graphics have gotten increasingly complex over the last 20 years, like it or not, and it takes a lot more people than it used to to crank out a visually impressive game. You don't shit out an AAA blockbuster in GameMaker.
3) This, IMO, is the most important one: The price of video games has stagnated since the late 90's. Somewhere the consumer, as a whole, got this idea of a brand new AAA game at launch = $60. New releases on SNES/Genesis could cost over $100 in the early 90's, and that's EARLY 90'S MONEY. Inflation happens. $60 in 1998 is worth $90 in 2018. Video games SHOULD cost way more than they do, and devs have had to find ways to close that gap.
Better UI probably
t. gets all his indie knowledge from Sup Forums memes
If you had some sense the right would have Skullgirls, Blue Revolver, Shovel Knight, Legend of Grimrock 2, Underrail, etc...
Profuse diarrhoea
Yes goy give developers more money to spend on marketing, celebrity voice actors and other garbage while keeping the budgets for everything that matters low as fuck
I didn't say anything like that, but feel free to be a cunt if you want.
Making video games, in general, is not a money-making venture.
Did Wu finish that game anyway?
Expand your horizons and stop playing AAA trash.
Distribution of games is cheaper than ever, though
Professionals
Does Kero Blaster actually do any of those?
>3) This, IMO, is the most important one: The price of video games has stagnated since the late 90's. Somewhere the consumer, as a whole, got this idea of a brand new AAA game at launch = $60. This. It also doesn't take into consideration that the quality and the amount of content in games has improved significantly. In the 80s you would pay the equivalent of $90 today for a 2 hour game that was complete dogshit. These overly cynical people like Jim Sterling only look at the current video game industry in a vacuum and don't take into account how it was before now.
I agree
Doesn't matter what you say when the reality is that half the budget of any given bigger title goes to marketing alone. Why in the world would you ever think it's a good idea to give those guys more money to waste?
What's the only difference between a sexbot and a gynoid?
A firewall
what am i seeing here?
This animation was bad, but what is up with that ahoge?
i like fez tho. What's wrong with it?
Kero Blaster uses 2x sized sprites, which means that stuff can get misaligned by half a pixel, but it doesn't use "rixels" and it has a fairly low native resolution.
By todays standards Tetris and Pacman would be considered minigames
Are there any public stats on how well Kero Blaster sold on mobile? I bought it when it was originally released and it probably has the best mobile control scheme of any platformer I've ever played.
by "capitalism" in this case he clearly meant the corporations
You should try playing Shovel Knight, m8.
>I'm convinced Kero Blaster sold like shit
Because it looks lazy.
it....... it's true. the art is why.
im so mad, i'd work for peanuts with that genius.
The marketplace is over-saturated. Using an example of a game that risky and quite creative, LIMBO made a shit ton of sales when indie games were a relatively new thing. It wouldn't sell anywhere near the same amount if it were released in 2018. That's on distribution companies being greedy and thinking quantity over quality (ie Steam).
Also funding for games needs a re-work. At AAA level ability to fund projects seems to be concentrated in the hands of very few companies who mostly all follow the same route to success (give them what they already like).
Absolutely nothing. You can't even accuse it of being obsessed with shitty memes or identity politics.
god cave story is great.
Shovel Knight was alright, but the expansions were way better and fun. Shovel Knight on his own is just an ok 6/10 game that you forget afterwards
Cave Story+ was a part of Humble Bundle, that might be a part of the reason for the numbers
KB was in July 2017 monthly bundle
I enjoyed the game but did you forget it literally has a "deal with it" meme in it?
