My current computer is from 2006 and it can barely run steam without squealing. I'm pretty sure if i posted the speccy it'd induce vomiting. My friend has an oldish computer that just needs a new graphics card to work great, and i could really use it.

R9 380X or R9 390/GTX 970 if you don't mind spending a little more.
Wouldn't recommend anything less than that. Especially the 4GB version of the GTX 960.

Get the 380X, you should be fine for a while. Just make sure you have a big enough power supply in it, because it takes power like a motherfucker

Yeah, any model you like. Personally, i have heard good things about sapphire, but i have never actually dealt with them. Ask in stupid questions general, they might be able to give you some reccomendations on models.

Reference 380X's are rated at 190w peak power draw, so let's assume a non-reference eats up an additional 20-30 watts. That's pretty standard for a GPU.
A good 550-650 watt power supply would be more than enough for a single 380X.

I grabbed a 750ti FTW a few months back for like $130. Despite all the Sup Forums hatred, I love the card. Plays FO4 on nearly the highest settings and takes a modest overclock very well and still runs VERY cool thanks to the gigantic radiator and dual fans. Also, my 450w PSU is handling it without issue.
Those are the only requirements of mine.
10/10 would buy again.

Yeah. Games wise it runs those fine indeed. On linux I have several issues.
For one, DEs with animations, I have to give them up. They stutter here and there, with both proprietary and open source drivers.
Then there's tearing issues on Chrome. Which are solved by installing proprietary drivers but performance goes down the toilet. I also wanted to use the latest Ubuntu but oopsy daisy, we just killed support for those proprietary drivers anyways. Gotta wait til AMDGPU supports it or maybe it just won't.
