Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook). ---- If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance). Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models: T420 - 14", normal size X220 - 12.5", lightweight ---- Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops) >Used machines are plentiful and cheap. >Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet. >Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels. >Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models. >Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop. >Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain. >The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Repeating question from the last thread:
Can I play Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri on my T430 (i5 3320M, no dedicated graphics) without it heating up too much or any other issues?
Also, what is a good use for an expresscard slot?
Levi Hernandez
...
Nathaniel Lee
Best notebook of all time.
David Moore
I play Civ 5 on my X220 on lowest settings with no problems, so your T430 will run Alpha Centauri just fine.
Christopher Peterson
What are your max temps while gaming?
Leo Taylor
I'm pretty sure it maxes out, so ~90C (YMMV, since I haven't changed the thermal paste since I bought it).
Blake Cox
is there a list of games that are known to run reasonably well on memepads? I just got my t420 and I want to get some games on that bad boy
Jason Brooks
tuxracer
Ryan Turner
Are those acceptable? At what point does the processor/motherboard or some other part of the laptop start getting damaged? Does gaming decrease longevity of laptops?
Jayden Phillips
>At what point does the processor/motherboard or some other part of the laptop start getting damaged? It's designed to shutdown at 100C, so it's pretty close to being bad, but nothing too damaging.
>Does gaming decrease longevity of laptops? Everything does. Not noticeably, though.
I'll test Civ 5 now and post accurate temps.
Bentley Ortiz
Tested my X220 with i5-2520M and Linux: >Idle 50°C >Civ 5 on lowest (with high textures) with playable framerate 85°C
Andrew Wright
I wanna use my T430 for another 3-4 years at least and don't wanna do anything that makes that impossible. Apparently, my last laptop, an Inspiron with dedicated graphics, died cause of a graphics card related issue.
Also >Linux Will temperatures be higher on win10?
Thanks for your help m8. I've downloaded Alpha Centauri, so I guess I'll do a test run.
Sebastian Stewart
>Will temperatures be higher on win10? They will probably stay the same.
By the way, gaming not only decreases lifetime of your thinkpad, it also decreases your lifetime as well :^) Pick a hobby with low performance requirements if you value fun less than using your laptop a bit longer.
Kayden Gonzalez
>not a TiBook pleb
Alexander Cook
Are you comfy today /tpg/ ?
Alexander Moore
Can I get an opinion on this? The specs look pretty good...at least better than what the laptop I'm using at the moment.
T430, cost me $250. Backlit kb, 1600x900 screen. Will add a Samsung Evo next month in place of the DVD-RW.
And this is my first chinkpad too. Fucking love this keyboard.
Landon Phillips
Why replace your DVD drive? Just get the mSATA variant of the Evo.
Matthew Ortiz
Replace the hard drive with the ssd, and put the hard drive in the caddy.
Jacob Edwards
Yeah, that's what I was going to do. I just need to figure out a way to transfer the OS and everything else from the HDD to the SSD, so that I don't have to install everything again. I suppose there must be some kind of software for that, didn't look it up yet.
I was under the impression that the T430 doesn't have an mSATA slot, only the T430s.
Gavin Parker
You were under the wrong impression. If you want to make sure, just take a look under the keyboard and palm rest.
Adrian Hughes
>I just need to figure out a way to transfer the OS and everything else from the HDD to the SSD Since you're getting a Samsung SSD, you have a few options. One is Samsung's own software, that happily clones your HDD to the SSD while you get to use your computer in the meantime. Another is Clonezilla, which you'll need to boot into with a USB stick so it can clone stuff while it's not in use.
Parker Cox
What gaymes do you play on your ThinkPad, deus baka?
Jayden Turner
FTL
Noah Roberts
anyone knows if a thinkpad w700 that came originally with a core 2 x9100 can be upgraded to a qx9300? or there are some restrictions? lenovo was offering is with that cpu as well, but i couldn't find much about it on the internet.
Juan Cox
Civilization V, Civilization: Beyond Earth. Both also work on Linux, officially.
Nicholas Anderson
Overwatch right now cause its the beta. Borderlands 2 and HL2DM usually, but just got an eGPU setup for my X230 so gonna be able to expand the gaming library.
Angel Powell
Holy shit, you're right. But isn't there any performance loss if I use the mSATA slot instead of the main SATA III? Awesome, but I might have a little bit of a problem. I've made two partitions of my current HDD and I have stuff installed on both of themn. Unless Clonezilla or some other similar software can make partition-to-partition cloning, I'm screwed.
Julian Foster
Fuck it, just clone the whole thing partitions and all to your SSD with Clonezilla. You can delete partitions you don't need on either drive later.
Caleb Diaz
During real use, I'd say mSATA is actually faster.
Austin Martinez
Thanks for the answers. I just had an idea. Since, after getting and SSD, I wanted to upgrade the HDD to a 1TB one and since I found out that I have an empty mSATA as well, I was thinking that I could do the following: - instal SSD in mSATA slot - install 1TB HDD in place of the 320GB HDD - install the 320GB HDD in place of the DVD-RW and onyl use it to store the paging file.
Did anyone try this? Is there any real benefit to storing your pagefile on a separate HDD?
Parker Phillips
>anyone knows if a thinkpad w700 that came originally with a core 2 x9100 can be upgraded to a qx9300? or there are some restrictions? lenovo was offering is with that cpu as well, but i couldn't find much about it on the internet. It can be, yes.
Charles Diaz
God no. I've had to work on those since my wife's kept breaking.
Mason Hall
I would just not bother even having a paging file. If you have enough ram for anything you are going to do it should not be an issue. Also it would be best to check that the msata slot in the t430 is actually sata 3. If its sata 2 you would be better of using a 2.5 inch ssd in the main slot and putting a storage drive in the ultrabay. Then at most get a small msata drive to use as either cache or as the page file storage.
Hunter Sanders
Are x220 and x201 good enough for programming? I am concerned about the 12' screen being too small and needing to upgrade later.
another thing is, since I don't live in us t420, x220/201 refurb/used cost around $300-400 here while a typical i3, 4gb and 500hdd new laptop costs $400, in this case are thinkpads still viable option? Plus I am concerned about quality Here.
Are there any good new laptops that I should pick instead?
Xavier King
Spend a little extra and get a sexy T520 with a 1080 screen, that'll be good with the 1080 screen height, and it has sufficient cooling for a quad core if that turns you on.
Hunter Rivera
It's fine if you use the entire screen
Thomas Cruz
X220 is great for programming if you're okay with small font, since the resolution isn't great. But the performance is perfect.
>I don't live in us Doesn't matter, buy on ebay. There's always protection if something goes wrong. Worth saving a few hundred dollars.
Carson King
This, i believe that he should get the sandy bridge T or x series even if it costs more in his country, it beats whatever cheap, 768p i3 consumer garbage he'd get for the same price.
Isaac Reyes
Ok I think I will get x220 or t420 whichever I find cheaper, Thanks for responding and feedback.
Noah Brooks
Got my first Thiccpad blazeit at just $160, how'd I do?
No bios password and computrace disabled, no battery though. The one the seller had installed was a knockoff 9 cell which only lasts around 2 hours so I got him to knock off 40 bucks. Kept the knockoff charger, wonder what he's gonna do with just the shitty battery?
Zachary Myers
Thinkpad life is comfy
Oliver Reed
Forgot to mention, seller wiped/reinstalled os, probably lost some drivers. There's no biometric software although it's detected in device manager and Bluetooth is detected in bios but not in device manager
What do?
Kevin Young
No Quadro 4200M, but goddamn man, you got the 900p and a 2.6GHz. Good deal
Carter Morales
If the driver is installed, set up biometric in windows account settings.
Jaxon Baker
I finally fell for meme Sup Forums.
I bought a Thinkpad from an auction I just won for $165.
Suggestions for SSD?
Austin Sanders
Old Samsung EVOs like the 830 and 840 are affordable and very nice.
Isaac Reyes
BrutalDoom.
Cooper Wright
damn right it is
Carter Gray
Shouldn't a device with no drivers still show up as an unknown in device manager? I think your bluetooth adapter might be fucked
Charles Jenkins
>X series thinkpad with a mechboard and a drink on some sort of ledge, Not sure what I'm looking at, but I like it.
Robert Cruz
that's scaffolding
Connor Adams
Shitposting with a view.
Lincoln Campbell
How does the eGPU run? What GPU do you use?
Jaxon Howard
thanks man
Zachary Long
That looks comfy as fuck, wiz
Gabriel Sanders
Brutal Doom and FTL are the only games I'll ever need.
Nicholas Nelson
you know it faggot
Alexander Kelly
What distro are you running? Also that looks comfy as fuck
Nolan Sullivan
fagbuntu 15.10 just wanted to install something that werdk. might change to something else but effort
Alexander Diaz
So, I finally downgraded my x230. I got rid of: >one 8GB RAM stick >64GB SD Card >Ultrabase station >One 90W power supply >1TB HDD
And now I'm finally happy with this laptop. And I got extra $120 for selling above stuff.
Logan Rodriguez
Does anyones t420 cpu make a weird buzzing, sound when stepping up or down?
Jace Sanders
Anyone here who has done/attempted putting an Ivy Bridge processor into a *20 series (T420, specifically)?
Now that they worked out how to make the keyboard work perfectly, there's no reason not to.
Xavier Roberts
Try out the stock keyboard first, if you feel like the "old" keyboard is worth going through the hassle to change then yeah sure go for it
Jonathan Powell
Because having resources you don't need is a waste. 16GiB RAM is literally a meme, same applies to having ultimate amount of storage that is used to store gaymes, movies other shit you will never use. Even this 240GB is too much for me, 120GB SSD would be perfect in my case.
Jeremiah Miller
Well if you aren't sacrificing anything too necessary the 120$ sound like it's worth it
Justin Nelson
>can't get anything installed on 600X >gave up and played TMU on the Nintendo E6400
Juan Phillips
i went from stock to 2x4gb low voltage dual channel ram and 120gb ssd, also the i5 is sufficient for me
Blake Moore
GET PLZ
Adrian Moore
ree.
Landon Martin
>Are x220
i do all my programming stuff on my x230 an i love the mobility you get with the small size
>needing to make compromises I bet you also bought an X series because you thought a T series would be too heavy.
Owen Rodriguez
Bought T410 to replaced my old T400. Cost $157 CAD (shipping cost is rip off than other items. stupid seller is not far from my area but my first time won auction $99 CAD on ebay). No hard drive on it. I have already 256GB SSD and 8GB RAM. T400 was free from trash bin where my big brother found and gave me. He wanted it back because of coreboot/libreboot (he cant flash his R61i).
Enjoying my x220 Got a 9 cell amd a kingdian ssd in here, battery life is insane. Bottom of case is fucked but cant be bothered replacing
Cameron Powell
GTX750 2GB
Xavier Thomas
No, T series are too big, not too heavy. Also reliable T series have no IPS option
Jordan Jenkins
Benchmarks? Do you remember whether or not you got good frames compared to a 750 on a desktop?
Charles Brown
What's a good $800-$1000 14" Thinkpad? I'm working on a new company and they will give approximately 1k dolla to buy a new laptop.
Jason Lopez
It was never using more than 60% bus bandwidth unless artificially benchmarked (but still not 100%), so every single game I was playing was running at 100% efficiency.
